DAWSON, GA., Dec. 1611, 1903.
——
CONGRATULATIONS ALL AROUND.
The results that have already been
accomplished wader the uniform text
-book law passed at the last session of
the general assembly surpass even the
expectations of the most ardeat advo
.gates of the measure.
The commission, composed of able
.and patriotic Georgians, to whem was
delegated the duty to.contract for
books to be taught in the schools of
the state for the mext five years-have
just completed that work, and they an
nounce that a conservative estimate of
the amount that will be saved to the
people of Gecrgia uwnder the unifermi
ty law will not be less than 8600,000.
Books will be bought from 25 to 56 per
cent-cheaper than heretofore, and the
quality will not be eheapened.
There is cause for ¢ongratulation all
around. The legislature is to be con
gratulateg for enactisg the uniformity
law, the members of the book commis
.sion for the able and wise manner in
which they have diseharged their ar
~Auous and delicate duties, and the peo-,
ple upon the vast ameunt of money:
‘that will besaved to them under the]
.operations of the new measure.
ANOTHER DINING,
There has been another dining with
an off-color feature at Waskington (not
Booker), where the politicians have
done so many suarprising shings of late.
This time -Senator Hanna was the
sost and the oecasion was & banquet
40 the members ©of the national repub-
Jican committee, who had met to
select a time amd place for holding
the mext convention. Conspicuous
among the guests at the feast was Jud
son Lyons, the negro committeaman
from ‘Georgia, and -of all the seyeral
svhite men from the’ south who mere
present Judge Robisson, the member
{rom North Carolina, .was the only ene
t 0 balk. He indigzantly withdrew
from the hall with the remark that
while he was a republican he was also’
a geatlemao, and his politics did not
g 0 to the extent of soeigl intercourse
of this kind even in view of the exam
ple set at the white house. |
All of the other eouthern re:puh]i-*1
cans held their places manfally at Lheii
festal board aad took their dish ofj
coon with seeming good grace, with
the hope, doubtless, that Boss Hanna
will after awhile serve tempiing des
sert in the shape of pie.
A GROWING INTEREST IN LIVESTOCK
There has been much favorable com
ment throughout the state upon ihe
recent organization at Albany of an
association to promote the ralsing of
live-stock throughout southwest Geor
gia.
In the last several years the farmers
of Terrell county have ¢ reatly improv
ed their live-gtock, and intérest in this
direction is growing. Registered cat
tle and hogs are to be found on a num
ber of farms in the county, and it
would be hard to estimate the value
that the introduction of improved
stock has been to the county the past
several years.
But there is yet a great deal that
““ean be done in this direction, and it 1s
such organizations as the one that was
recently formed at Albany that will
encourage the people to increase both
the quality and the guaptity of thkeir
stock.
HE WANTS TO KNOW,
Senator Hoar of Massachusetts has
made some Inquiries in the senate
which may be embarrassiong to the ad
ministration. He wants to know
whether at the time the so-called Pan
ama republic ratified the canal treaty
it had successfully established its imo
dependence, had lawlully adopted a
constitution, and had givgn authority
to any person to negotiate a treaty.
#This is a‘timely resolation,’”’ says
the Savannah Press, ‘‘but Senator
Hoar will probably be met with the
cry that ‘he is trying to block the dig
ging of the canal.” It will not do in
the minds of the enthusiastic advo
cates of the Panama deal to look too
closely into the facts.”
HoN. HAL LEWIs, former associate
justice of the supreme court of Geor
gia, died unexpectedly at his home in |
Greeasboro on Thursday morning. He
was an able jurist, and one of Geor
gia’'s most djstinguished men. He
eame into national prominence through
the speech ne made nominating Mr.
Bgyan for the presidency at the Chi
cago convention. %
lex’T there danger of having too
many federal courts? If congressmen
continue to create them they will soon
be as plentiful as superior courts, and
there will be that maoy more officers
out after cost. There are things for
which there is more need than courts,
especially federal eourts.
THERE is little doubt that the re
yublicans will elect the next president,
2nd the convention to nominate him
1 as been called for Jure 1 of next year
iu Chicago.
AGGRESSIVE INCONSISTENCY. 1
The:United Daughters of the Con
federacy throughout the south are
éiopning resolutions thanking the na
tional government for recognizing the
right of secession by the unequivocal
stand Mr. Roosevelt's administratiofi
has taken in the Panama matter.
It is a keen thrust and a telling one
—a master stroke of irony.
The south a few years ago wished to
secede and did so, believiag that it had
a right to take such a step. Instantly
‘a howl went up from the north. The
‘south had no right to secede! It was
treason! The secessionists were trait
ors!
~ Baut, verily, circumstances do alter
cases, especially when Uncle Sam’s
maw must perforce be satiated. Uncle
Sam wants the Panama} canal, there
fore Panama nas a right to secede. No
treason in that! Oh, no!
Consistency, what a jewel thou
art."
AN order has been issued by the
postoffice department at Washington
directing a rigid enforcement of the
section of the postal laws and regula
tions which absolutely:cxcludes all in
seets and reptiles from the mails. The
action is the result jof reports that
specimens of the Texas boll weevil
have been found in the mails.
MR. MURPHY, the Tammany boss,
has punctured the report that he
is for Judge Parker for president.
With some this will add to the reputa
tion of the Tammany high-muck-a
muck as a wise and safe political lead
e, while in the eyes of others his im-’
portance and influence will drop a good ‘
many points.
A€CORDING to ome Atlanta paper
'Hanoa and Roosevelt are the best of
friends and according to another they
are sworn enemies, whieh leads the
Rome Tribune to the comelusion that
the only way to get all of the news is
to read all of the papers.

WirH Hanna asd Roosevelt scrap:
ping the prospeets are promising for
the republican party to get in the con
dition that put the democrats out of
business. e
THE south has pulled many thousand
dollars from the north this season in
cotton futures. A tew dimes have
come to Dawson. :

that lambs will be plentiful after

THERE is much talk about ‘‘Greater

been annexed. And it is greater.
THE reformers are on a hot trail ini
Macon. But there are so many trails
that they are not iiable to tree. |
THE polize and pleasing candidate is
already abroad in some of the countics
of the state.
THE postoffice scandal is growing
darker and dirtier.
Judge Sheffield.
From the Albany Herald.
The Herald is glad indeed to learn
that Judge H. C. Sheffield of the Pa
taula circult has sufficiently recovered
his health to feel justitied 1n giying
pnotice that he will resume his term
duties on the bench early in January.
Judge Sheffield bas made a fine record
on the bench, and it is sincerelv hoped
by the good people of his circuit that
‘his term of usefuiness will last for sev
eral vears to come.
A Desperate Thief,
From the Bavannah News.
The most desperate thief of the sea
son burglarized the pest house at Fort
‘Waynpe, Ind., the other night and car
ried away a lot of bedding that bad
been used by smallpox patients. The
detectives are looking for the burglar
with spy glasses.
They Thought of Home,
From the Georgetown Tribune.
Two of the Randolnh county boys
went over to Euafaula Monday to waten
the price of cotton go up. The last
heard of them they were standing on
the corner sucking their thumbs and
thinkiong of home and the number of
crossties, .

Cause and Effect.
From the Macon Telegraph.
A clerk in the eensus office, a young
negro from Alabama, has been sus
pended, pending an investigation by
Director North, for “‘writing a love
letter’’ to a young white woman clerk
in the same department. The latter
appealed for protection and ‘‘became
s 0 ill that she had to be sent home.”
The writer of the love letter, one
would think, will seek to justify him
self by citing the fact that the presi
dent dined a negro at the white house.
Certainly the relation of thetwo events
is not far removed from that of cause
and effect.
{ Elections in Brunswick.
