done with this end in view at the pro
posed meeting tomorrow it is very
probable that the school board, at
their next meeting, which will be on
Monday of next week, will take up the
matter, discuss plans and decide how
much should be spent 1n giving Daw
sona modern and comfortable building
in which to educate her children.
It will require congiderable time in
which to decide upon plans, sell the
ponas and advertise for bids. and if
work is begun on the new building

STATE TAX BOOKS WILL. CLOSE SATURDAY
A Day Earlier Than Usual on Account of 20th Coming on Sunday.
A Rush Expected at Collector’s Oftice Balance of Week.
The state tax books will close on
next Saturday, the 19th inst., one day
earlier than usual.
The law requires the books to elose
on the 20th of December, but as that
date comes on Sunday this year Satur
day of this week is the last day on
which they will be open.
As is well known there is no county
tax, but the state tax to be paid by
CITY COURT NEXT MONDAY.
The Regular Quarterly Term
Will Convene,
The -regular quarterly term of the
city court, with Judge Raines presid
ing, will convene at the usual hour
next Monday morning.
Both civil and criminal business will
be tried at this session of the court,
and it ig possible that it will last long
er than one day.
There has been no session of the
court in two months, and there are
thirty-five or forty criminal cases on
the aocket for trial.

Popular Couple of Doverel Wed in
Dawson at Parsonage.
Mr. Chas. A. Lee and Miss Leila
Thornton were married Wednesday
evening at the Baptist pastorium by
Rev. J. M. Long. The eyent was a
very quiet one, and only the relatives
and a few friends had been made cog
pizant of the approaching wedding.
Mrs. Lee is well known in Dawson,
where she has spent a great portion of
her time with her sister, Mrs. B.S.
Mathews, although her home is at Do
verel. She is exceedingly attractive,
and was very popular socially. Mr.
Lee is & leading young citizen of the
county, being engaged in the mercan
tile business at Doyerel, and is a young
man of the highest integrity.
The couple have scores of friends
who wish for them a full measure of
happiness.

Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Jordan have re
turned from their bridal trip to Flor
ida, and are at bome on Stonewall
street to their triends.
Miss Hattie Griffith came down from
Parrott Saturday to be the guest of
Mrs. W. A. McLain for a day or two.
Rev. J. S. Funderburk, who will be
stationed at Ft. Gaines the ensuing
year, was in Dawson Friday.
Miss Mary Addie Murph of Mar
shallville is a guest at the bome of
Mrs. J. R. Mercer.

Col. H. A Wilkinson has been in
Lampkin this week attending Stewart
superior court.
Miss Vernal Griggs has returned

Miss Bessie Couch of Hapeville is

A Report Corrected.
It is reported that I furnished Wm.
Brown, who killed bis wife, with mon
ey to help him in getting off. I wish
to postively deny this, I am noteven
acquainted with Wm. Brown, and bave
not aided him in aoy way. 1 think all
lawbreakers should be punished.

Small Negro Boy Was Hiding
Near Money Drawer.
John Baldwin, a small negro boy,
was pulled from a place of hiding Mon
day morning under a counter in Mr.
C. L. Mize’s store, where it was sup
osed he bad seereted himself for a
more convenient season to pilfer. He
was right under the money drawer,
and doubtless hid there while the
store was being swept out early in the
morning, The boy was given a good
scare by the officers and released, as
he had not stolen anything.

nounce that hereafter services will be
held at the Herod Baptist church on
the first Sunday and Saturday before

in preaching days, and govern them

TOWIND UP YEAR’S AFFAIRS
'COUNCIL WILL HEAR DEPARTMENT RE
PORTS FOR 1903 TGNIGHT.
Mayor and Three Aldermen Will Be Sworn
in as Own Successors. Officers Will Be
Elected and Salaries Fixed.
The city council will meet tonight
(T'uesday) for the purpose of winding
up the affairs of 1903 and beginning
the work of the ensuing year.
Atthe meeting tonight reports for
the past twelve.months of the various
departments of the city government
will be made. Each of these reports
will smow the cost of operations and
the revenue received by the city
through each department.
During the present year, not includ
ing the amount received from the dis
pensary, the city has received $19,-
884.84 as follows: Advalorem taxes,
$10,417.86, from electric lights $4,520,
special licenses $2,714 90, police court
fines 8719.50, street tax $9OO, fi fas
$253.08, eemetery 3155, rents $6O, mis
cellaneous accounts $82.50. The ex
penditures of the city, showing the
cost of each department, will appear
next week, when the official reports
will be published.
After the business of the present
year has been disposed of Mayor J. R.
Mercer and Aldermen Chas. Deubler,
A. J. Baldwin and T. O. Whitchard,
who were recently elected to succeed
themselves, will take the oath of of
'fice and the council will proceed to
elect officers and fix salaries for 1904,
There is no opposition to any of the
incumbents so tar as is known, and the
present police force, firemen and other
employes ot the citv will doubtless be
elected to succeed themselves.
The hunting season is onoe more
with us. A gun and some Peters
shells will do the work,

charge of a local packing house in
Dawson for Armour & Co. of Chicago.
This house has herectofore had indi
rect connection with Dawson through
J. A. Currell & Co. of Albany, and Mr.
Cheatham has been this firm’s repre~
sentative here. He has now coaplet
ed arrangements by which the Dawson
branch is severed from Albany and
has direct connection witt the big
Chicago house for this city and sur
rounding territory.
Mr. Cheatham is one of Dawson’s
most popular young men, and possesses
rare business acumen and judgment.
His many friends hope and predict
much success for him in his manage
ment of his new interests.
