The Atlanta News believes that the

COTTON ACREAGE INCREASED
About Ten Per Cent More Than
It Was Last Year,
The New York Jourpal of Commerce
and Commercial Bulletin says:
A strictly preliminary estimate of
the cotton acreage of the United
Suates, especially prepared by this
journal, indicates an increase of not
less than 10 per cent over 1903. This
increase is smaller than anticipaved,
but the returns. which were averaged
April 24, are given exactly as received,
‘without allowances of any sort, and
are of course subject to revision in
the final estimates a month hence.
Last year the cotton acreage of the
Uuited States, according to the depart
ment of agriculture, was 28907,000
acres, and an increase of 10 per cent
would mean ap addition of about 2,900,-
tOUO acres.

SHE MADE MONEY FARMING
Woman Retired After Five Years
With a Competency. l
In Derby, Conn., there is a young
woman, Miss Mary Way, who is cred-'
ited with having made money enough
at farming in five years to retire and |
live at ease hereafter; and her fa.rm‘
was not a very good one, either.. Mies
Way was left an orphan five years ago
with herliving to make from a stony
and worn out farm. She immediately
invested every cent she could raise 1n
blooded cattle, and went into the stock
business. She bought all of the Jersey
and Holstein calves she could find,
and devoted herself to making them
the best stock that high feeding and
unremitting care could produce. She
' arose at 4 o’clock in the morning and
p :rsonally supervised even the small
est details of carine for the stock.
Soon her cattle became famous, and
wealthy people wanted cows from her
farm. She charged fancy vprices for
them, and got what she demanded.
Now she has transferred her business’
t) other hands, and has money enough
to enable her to quit work.
