One of the most : emarkable exhibits
which will be seen ab the St. Louis
exposition is a'collection of that spe
cies of mosquitoes which are supposed
1o carry germs of yellow fever. The
collection is in charge of Dr. Fred
erick Torralbas, & member of the
poard of health of Havana. Dr. Tor
ralbas was at one time a surgeon of the
marine hospital service, and he took
part in the series of experiments that
were made io Havana two or three
years 420 for the purpose of discover
ing whether or nob the germ of yeliow
{ever Was carried by the mosquito,
and if 80 what species of the insect
conveys it. . -
no[n L)m: collection that is at the ex
position there is nore that has heen
innoculated with yellow fever. There
fore if they should escape they
wouldn't be a source of danger. They
gre in a cage and are fed on sugar and
water. They live three o four days,
long enough to deposit larvae, from
which comes & new crop. Thus the in
sects 20 O increasing, and Dr. Torral
pas says that by the first of June he
will have in his cage between 800 and
1,000 mosquitoes. :
Of course the mosquitoes, unaccom
panied by experiments, wouldn’t be of
much interest, but it is th 2 purpose to
have demonstrations, showing exactly
now yellow fever is spread by them.
There will be uo yellow fever patients,
but subjects will be brought in contact
with the insects and there will be
practical demonstrations which, it is
expected, will help to educate the pub
lic 1n regard to the subject.
It is doubtful if the mosquito theory
is as vet fully accepted. It is worthy
of notice that the Texas authorities
are notdepending npon killing mosgui- |
toes that may escape from Mexico t,o‘
keep the yellow fever out of that state
pext summer. Ihey are depending]
upon tue old-fashioned quaraantine.
They have made a regulation thav per
sons coming from the yellow feyer dis
trict of Mexico shall be quarantined a
certain number of days at the border
before entering Texas.

SCHEME TO GULL VISITORS.
Plan of Fakirs to Gather Shekels
at World’s Fair Exposed.
The shrewd scheme of some smart
fellows in Realing, Pa., to separate
gullible visitors to the St. Louis Ex
position from quarters and half-dollars
has just come to grief. A year ago
these schemers shipped a carload of
slag from the iron furnaces at Reading
to New York. The slag had no value,
hence the only expeunse of putting it
into New York was the freight. In
the big city the stuff was put into lit
tle bags and labeled, **Volcanic Lava
from Mont Pelee.” It sold like hot
cakes at 25 cents per bag, and the en
terprising fakirs cleared something
like $2,000 on the car loac. They were
making arrangements Lo send several
car loads of slag to St. Louis, to be
similarly sold to fair visitors, when
the secret leaked out and the men
skipped town.

W. Capps, of Capps, Ala. “I used
Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy with

this is the best remedy I have ever

he was forced to sacrifice the lambs in

SHELLS PUT THEM T 0 SLEEP
AN INVENTION T 0 DO AWAY WITH
THE HORRORS OF WAR.
A Hungarian Genius, With Considerable
Military Experience, Has a Plan
' for Bloodless War.
War is hell, said General Sherman,
A Hungarian benefactor of the species,
howeyer, has invented a means for
making 1t truly humane—without its
guilt, and with only 25 per cent of its
dangers, as Mr. Jorrocks observed of‘
hunting.
This amiable genius, whose experi
ence of war dates back to the Austrian '
campaigns against France in 1859, and
against Prussia in 1866, has hit, he de
clares, on a solution of the problem of
making military omelettes without
breaking eggs.
He has invented a new kind of shell,
which ot bursting liberates a gas war
ranted co incapacitate all who breathe
it without producing any permanently
serious effects. A single shell of Lbei
kind bursted beitween the decks of a
warship would convert it into the pal
ace of the sleepiog beauty, only when
the crew recovered they would find
{ themselves up in a hoetile port.
A regiment thus putout of action
would be none the worse in a few days,
but they would need to give parole not
to fight again or wars would never end.
~ This sounds like a fairy tale, but it
is by no means scientifically impos
sible.
The inventor is full of confidence
that he can do what he promises, and
is pow in communication with the Jap
anese government, His national
hatred of Russia, dating back to 1848,
prevented him from approaching the
czar, 1o whose pacific tastes such an
invention should especially appeal.
1f the shell in question proves to be
efficacious—as to which one must
await the trials which the inventor
is eager to undertake—the Hague con
vention must Include a new clause, to
the effect that all combatants once put
out of action are to consider them
selves dead until the end of the war.
In the future army at least ene-half
will consist of ambulance corps for the
removal of these inert bodies. More
probably regular armies will be put
down, and there will be a premium on
volunteering.
What a Comment on War!
A monument in the form of a drink
ing fountain has been erected at Bur=-
stow, England, on the trough of which
is this inscription: “In memory of the
mute fidelivy of the 400,000 hors: s
killed and at the call of their masters
during the South African war. ”’
