Every Important Government Has Full Details of Works, Declares

of the Game of War. It Cannot Be Prevented.
“Jt is unquecstionably a fact,’” said a
retired ermy officer in Washington, l

in this country are in the possession of I
the general staff of more than one for

of every nation with which we arc!‘

of every army. Governments could |
not prevent it if they would. 1

FROM THE FEUD COUNTRY.
Judge Turner Has Quit Fighting.
Education Needed in Wilds.
The Rey. Samuel Tyndale Wilson,
president of Maryville College, Marsy -
yille, Tenn., of whom it is said that b
prefers to devote his life to work
among the Kentucky mountaineer:
rather than accept larger and more
lucrative Presbyterian appointments,
spoke to the Presbyte: jan winisters of
New York a few days ago. Dr. Wii
son told his hearers that the lower
Appalachian region is the only one 1v
the south, with 2,000,000 persons in it.
that has not a race problem. People
of black skins are almost unknown ib
the mountains of parts of Tenpessee,
Kentucky, West Virginia, North Car
olina, Georgia and Alabama, he sald.
¢ But while there is no race prob
lem,” he continued, ‘‘there i an Appa
lachian problem, arising from the ig
porance and provincialism of the peo
ple, and it is besv known through feuds
lasting many years and costing many
lives. These people are of pure Scoteh-
Irish descent, strong in character,
despite their Illiteracy, and they are
to be the great reserve of American
strength. Education will transform
them, and give them their place in
pational affairs, a place that they have
never taken, except during the brief
interval of the civil war.’’ |
Dr. Wilson said that Judge Turoer, |
one of the principals in the Turner-
Howard feud, as a resuit of that con
flict. in which he had buried three
sons and a son-In-law in his back yard,
has retired from feud warfare and be
come a church member.

“Yetno precautions are rigigl enough
to prevent the secrets of a pation’s for
tifications from becoming known to a
possible enemy. When works of this
character are built by contract it is
virtually certain that among the work
men will be foreign agents in disguise.
So perfectly are these men trained for
ievery possible contingency that detec

Ciever men are required, because they

The Masons of the second cougres

It is intended in connection with the

has been long contemplated, and there
seems to be every reason to believe
that the organization will be perfected

Not Responsible for the Assaults
Upon Hearst Supporters.
From the Griffin News.
The Savannoah Press makes this
brief comment;
“Talking up Parker and not run
ning down other democrats is the
Augusta Chronicle’s policy.”
Yes, and ins’t it ano agreeable
ohange to its readers! Only the other
day the Chronicle was filled with the
bitterest diatribes against Hearst that
were to be found in the state press;
pow it has very little to say about
either Parker or Hearst, and while its
attitude toward each is practically the
aame as before its manners are much
more courteous.
Most people, knowing his capacity
to say severe things, had attributed
the bitter editorials about Hearst to
Editor Loyless, but we are now en
clined to believe that this did that
prilliant paragrapher an injustice.
It may be only & coincidence, but it is
'a fact thataboutthe time these attacks
ceased Editor Hook’s connection with
the paper was severed and he has tak
en a place at the head of a large life
insurance agency
It looks as 1f the Chronicle man
agement had decided that it was a
poor policy to be continually jumningl
on such an eminent democratic leader
as Mr. Hearst, who, as it has probably
dl.sonvered‘ has a great nanyv sirong
friends and supporters in this state.
With the new lights that haye
dawned upon it, the Chronicle now
admits that Georgia will probublvi
sond an uninstructed deiegation to St.
Louis, which can then decide for iLself!
who is the most available man to beat

“Food Drunk."
“] know men and women,” sald
Thomas A. Edison recently, *‘‘who
are fcod drunk all the time.” *Food
drunk” is a new term. But it expresses
an idea that isold. It describes a con
dition that is notorious. Few of us
indeed but know people who are con
stantly gorged with food with the re
sult that their intellects are becloud
ed and their bodies benumbed just as
truly as if the excess had been liquid
instead of solid. "
A High 0/d Time,
Aerial dinners are now the fashion
in Paris. M. Santos Dumont recently
gave one at which the tables and
chairs were suspended from the ceil

stilts ana the plates and dishes were
raised on lifts. The guests got into
their seats by means of stepladders. £
