Another Advertisement of Proposed
Legislation in Regard to
City Officials.
Liast week there appeared in the ad
vertising columns of The News notice
of a proposed bill to amend the char
ter of Dawson so as to fix the term of
the mayor at two years instead of one,
and make that official and members of
the aldermanic board ineligible for re
election.
Today there appears another ad
vertisement which authorizes legisla
tion increasing the terms of both the
mayor and city treasurer from one to
two years and of aldermen from two
to four years, and making them ineli
gible (to succeed themselves. Under
this amendment, if it was made by the
legislature, the mayor and treasurer
and the aldermen elected next De
cember would serve two and four
years.
Representative Rainey is not com
mitted to any of these propositions,
and his action will be governed by
the wishes of the people and what he
believes will be to the best interest of
Dawson.

BRINGS IN A BAD NEGRO.
Bailiff Bivins of Bronwood Arrests
a Dangerous Character.
Bailiff C. C. Bivins of Bronwood
brought to Dawson on Thursday and
delivered to Sheriff Oxford a strange
negro who had a variety of dangerous
weapons on his person and gave his
name as Henry Smith from Ensley,
Ala. The usual aliases in such cases
developed. Smith became both Cleve
land and Jackson in a short space of
time. When arrested by Officer Bivins
the negro had a dirk concealed in his
bosom and a pistol, several dice and
wwo bunches of keys in his pockets.
He was committed to jail by Justice
Murray on the charge of carrying
concealed weapons.
The negro has papers that show he
has been in both Mississippi and Ala
bama recently, and Sheriff Oxford
thinks that he is wanted in one or the
other of these states for a serious
crime. He has scars that show he has
been shot twice—in the back and
through one of his hands.
A SAD DEATH.
Bride of a Few Months Is Claimed
by the Grim Reaper.
Peculiarly sad was the death of Mrs.
Robert Anthony at Sasser Saturday,
who succumbed to a long illness with
fever. She was married only six
months ago, having been formerly
Miss Benford of Taylor county, and
to the bereaved husband goes out the
heartfelt sympathy of friends and
neighbors in his great grief.
The remains were interred at Mace
donia cemetery Sunday after impress
ive services conducted by Elder R. H.
Jennings in the presence of a large
number of sorrowing friends and
relatives.

SAYS CITY CHARTER SHOULD BE AMENDED
«A Lover of Dawson” Endorses the Proposition to Make the
Mayor and Aldermen Ineligible to Succeed Themselves.
EDITOR OF THE NEWS: I see in the last issue of your paper a local bill
advertised that proposes, at the coming session of the legislature, an amend
ment to the charter of Dawson that will fix the terms of the mayor and alder
men at two years, and make them ineligible to succeed themselves. I think
that would be a wise and good law, and keep down all petty political issues
and bring about a change in the affairs of the city when needed. Having new
officials with new ideas would get us out of the old beaten ruts, and be for the
best interest and advancement of the city in every respect. A great many
other cities have laws limiting the terms of their officers, and you find them
keeping pace with all up-to-date improvements, which means that they are at
tractive, progressive and prosperous. A LOVER oF DAWSON.

Negro With a Lard Can Still Gets in
Trouble With Uncle Sam.
Ed Slaughter, a Webster county
negro, was carried to Columbus Sat

had arrested him at his home on a
charge of illicit distilling. Some time
in December the revenue officer made
a raid in that section and found a
““lard can’’ still on Slavghter’s place.
They also found some beer and other
material used in making moonshine
whiskey. Recently evidence was se
cured that pointed strongly to Slaugh

arrest followed. He was placed under
a bond of $2OO and released.

Woodmen Picnic Friday an Event in
Fraternity Circles. A Big Crowd
Will Go to Bolton’s Mill. |
The local Woodmen of the the
World will have their annual basket
dinner, with a barbecue attachment, at
Bolton’s mill on Friday of this week,
and as usual it will be largely attend
edand a thoroughly enjoyable affair. l
Everybody is invited tofattend, andl
help make the occasion a successful
and pleasant one. |
Among the guests will be United
States Senator A. S. Clay, who will
come to Dawson tomorrow as the
guest of Congressman Griggs, both of
these distinguished gentlemen being at
Tifton today at a big gathering of
the people'of Berrien county. Senator
Clay will make an address to the
Woodmen and the assembled crowd.
The Woodmen are very stong in
Dawson; in fact, their membership has
more than doubled in the past two
years, and their numerical progress
has been kept pace with by individual
and colleetive enthusiasm and sup
port. The local camp is one of the
most fourishing in the state, and all
indications point to its continued,
growth.
POTATO PROFITS DIDN'T PAN OUT
Riches Painted by Smoothe Traveling
Man Haven't Been Realized.
Last spring a traveling man, to
whose interest it was, quietly scattered
the report broadeast in Dawson and
Terrell county that much money could
be made this year by planting Irish
potatoes, stating that $2.00 a barrel
would be easy money for all who
planted them.
Whether the glorious picture he
painted of wealth had anything to do
with it or not, a great many citizens
planted acres in Irish potatoes. But
the handsome profits have thus far
failed to materialize. Only about fifty
cents a bushel is what the potato ship
ments have brought in, and there are
those who have bushels of them on
hand and do not know what to do with
them.
Nothing bhas been heard of the gen
tleman who made the ‘‘guarantee’” of
$2.00 per barrel since he sold large
quantities of very high priced guano
suitabie for fertilizing land planted in
potatoes.
