A KENTUCKIAN EXPLOITS WATER
It Is With No Idea of Drinking It, However. He Proposes

A few hundred casks full of water

equals $200,000,000, but with a con
flagration like that of Baltimore one
vear and San Francisco's the second
vear after, with the probability of
|almost as great disaster in New Or
leans or some of our most flimsily
built cities next year, if not this,
we may rightfully ask which year
is the normal one. This last great
conflagration has added possibly
$350,000,000 to the $200,000,000
“normal’”’ loss for the year. Five
hundred millions so far positively
assured, and with the year not yet
complete.
It,really costs infinitely more than
that, but some portions of the other
cost become more or less an ex
change. For instance, Americans
pay the companies who bet with
them that their buildings will not
burn $1,610,883,342 in premiums
every year; they pay $130,000,000
in salaries to fire departments, over
»100,000,000 more for (fire) water
supply, and probably another $lOO,-
000,000 in fire department inciden
tals. Money circulated, if you wish,
but that certainly could be put to
better account had Americans and
their progenitors used a little more
intelligence in building. Besides all
this expense in money, what think
vou of the 6,000 and more lives de
'stroyed by fire every vear?
Where the interior trimmings and
doors are of metal what little fire
does get into a building travels
slowly and is easily confined, and it
must be patent to all that if each
of these good details, found in San
Francisco in different buildings, were
assembled in one structure that
structure would be absolutely in
vulnerable and would merit in the
fullest sense of the term the name
of a ‘‘fireproof” building.

HEAT OF DEATH VALLEY.
It Is a Veritable Hell at This Time.
Many Are Dying From Heat
and Thirst.
Death Valley is a veritable hell at
this time on account of the exces
sive heat. In spite of the ill-advised
statements printed from time to time
that the valley and the surrounding
desert are not dahgerous to level
headed men, news coms in that
prospectors are becoming lost and
that seasoned miners and their ani
mals are dying from heat and thirst.
In Amargosa canyon work has al
most been suspended on the Tono
pah and Tidewater railway. A
large number of workmen have died
from the terrific temperature.
The crews have been working in
a deep canyon, covered with sand
and without a sign of vegetation.
With no other water than that
hauled through the burning desert
in large tanks they are unable to
withstand conditions.—Sacramento

~ THE UNIVERSITY OF PARIS.
Greatest Educational Center in the
World and Has 15,000 Students.
The University of Paris is the
greatest educational institution in
the world. The average attendance
is 15.0.00, many of them women.
Half these women are foreigners.
They go to the university from all
over the world, Europeans being
largely in the majority. The French
girls are frivolous, and do not take
so deep an interest in their studies
as the foreigners, who are pleasant
and cheery companions, but are very
gerious. Russian and Polish girls
are especially serious, and most of
them are very poor. They take up
literature, medicine and the applied
sciences in order to qualify them
selves for teachers and for physi
cians. Russians are more numerous
than any of the races except the
French. Next come the English and
Americans. As a rule, American
girls have more money, dress bet
ter, and live better than the Euro
pean students, but they do not have
so much respect for the faculty, and
are not so careful to obey the regu
lations. They are more independent,
and know how to take care of them
selves better than European girls.

closed the document with:

will do for my burial. 1 want a box
of $7 cigars given to the pallbearers.
1 want J.. P. Hazlett, John . Orr,

serve, and, if they are living, let
them carry the old man to the grave,
and when the ground is dumped in

hands at the grave, then go home
and take a drink and know that if
there is a place hereafter I will meet
them there.”

'“’ON])ERFI’L OPERATIONS HAVE
BEEN PERFORMED.
The Knife Used on Criminals and
Idiots With Perfeet Success. A
Man's Bad Temper Cured.
A 'great many alienists and crim
inologists are now of the firm opin
ion that incorrigibility and crime are
diseases caused either by restricted
brain development or physical cere
bral disturbances. Malformations of
the skull mark the degenerate, the
}idiot, the imbecile and the average
lunatic. Blows on the head, as has
’been well established, have frequent
ly caused radical changes in temper
ament, transforming the orderly and
peaceable person into a maniac of
homicidal or suicidal tendencies.
Where the brain may not develop
normally, or where it has been im
pinged upon by bone or blood clot
from heavy impact on the skull, it
is pretty certain that more or less
violent mental disturbances will fol
low. With perfect freedom for the
brain to grow, or to perform its funec
tions after full growth, the individ
ual as a rule remains normal and a
good citizen.
During several vears past scient
ists have given considerable atten
tion to the relief of mental crochets
by physical means. Brain surgery is
as yet practically in its infancy, nev
ertheless marvelous reclamations
have been made by means of the
scalpel and the terpine of persons
who a quarter ,of a century ago
would have been regarded as hope
lessly crazy or hopelessly criminal.
In Philadelphia, Boston, Cleveland
and Toledo within the past few
months brain surgery for the relief
of mental disorders and criminal in
clinations has been resorted to with
the most satisfactory results. Only
a week or so ago a man of the name
of Eichler was operated on in Cleve
land, at his own request. Two years
ago he sustained a heavy blow on
the head. Later he developed an
ungovernable temper and the desire
to kill. Realizing his condition he
placed himself in the hands of sur
geons. They found his brain de
pressed by a blood clot and a piece
of bone, which they removed. Upon
his recovery the man was even-tem
pered and cheerful-—perfectly nor
mal.
Dr. Donnelly of Toledo, who has
performed a number of operations
on incorrigible and idiotic children
with good results, is leading a move
ment to induce the state of Ohio to
adopt, at least temporarily, the prac
tice of surgery on criminals. He be
lieves that it will be for the bene
fit of the state as well as the sub
jects of the operations since, if in
corrigibles and criminals- can be
cured, the cost to the taxpayers will
be reduced, society will be safe
guarded and valuable citizens will be
restored to their communities. The
idea is one considerably in advance
of the times, but the day may be at
hand when the criminally inclined
and the insane will be sent to the
surgeon instead of the jail and the
asylum.

tablish this very important fact.
Thousands of people have been con
demned to undergo surgical operations,
Their physicians have told them that
they must either submit to such opera
tions or lose their lives.
After this they have resorted to
Peruna and found relief.
Other good remedies have accom
plished the same result, but it is safe to
assume that no other remedy has
equaled Peruna in its beneficent work.
Many of the alleged incurable de
rangements of the pelvis are dependent
upon catarrh.
There is no cure for these except the
removal of the catarrh.
Peruna seemingly works miracles in
gome of these cases. The explanation,
however, is very simple. Peruna re
moves the catarrh and Nature does the
