THE SMALLPOX IS SPREADING
ek
No Effort Is Being Made to Check
the Disease, and It Is Assuming
Proportions of an Epidemic,
The smallpox, which has prevailed
in the county for Sometime, is spread
ing, and although it ig assuming the
proportions of apn epidemic nobody
but those who have it seem to be
concerned, and nobody i making an
effort to check it and stamp it out.
The county authorities say that
under the law it is the duty of the
State Medical Board to take the mat
ter in hand, but if they have taken
the trouble to inform the state board
of the situation it is not known,
On the other hand, if the State
Medical Board knows of the preva
lence of the disease here the appar
ent unconcern and indifference that
is being shown is nothing short of
amazing.
There have been quite a number
of cases of the disease in the south
ern section of the county, and it is
reported that there have been one
or two deaths. Dr. W. C. Kendrick
was called Sunday to g 0 over the line
into Calhoun county to see a patient
who had smallpox, and he reports
that there are seven or eight cases
of it in that vicinity.
A young man who has been em
ployed at one of the warehouses in
Dawson this season went home Fri
day with a well developed case, and
a young man and his wife, who were
recently married and reside several
miles from Dawson, both have it,
It is especially unfortunate that
this loathsome disease has broken
out at this time. It is a malady that
thrives in cold weather, and the win
ter is just ahead.
It is clearly the duty of somebody
to do something.
BURGLARS ENTERED DEPOT.
Cash Drawer Was Torn Open, But
No Money Found.
A burglar entered the Seaboard
depot the other night, but got no re
ward for his trouble.
The cash drawer in the ticket office
was broken open, but it was empty,
as the day’s receipts were locked in
the safe at the close of the day’s
business.
The burglar effected entrance by
breaking a pane of glass and raising
the window after unfastening the
latch which held it.
A Religious Authgr's Statement.
Rev. Joseph H. Fesperman, Salis
bury, N. C.,, who is the author of
several books, writes: ‘“For several
vears I was afflicted with kidney
trouble, and last winter 1 was sud
denly stricken with a severe pain in
my kidneys, and was confined to bed
eight days, unable to get up without
assistance. My urine contained a
thick, white sediment, and I passed
same frequently day and night. I
commenced taking Foley's Kidney
Remedy, and the pain gradually
abated and finally ceased and my
urine became normal. I cheerfully
recommend Foley’'s Kidney Remedy.”

That is the main reason why our

‘[SUPERIOR COURT IN SESSION
The Grand Jury Found a Number of
True Bills the First Day. Court
on Civil Business.
Terrell Superior Court convened
Monday morning with Judge W. C.
Worrill presiding and Solicitor-Gen
eral Laing and Stenographer J. B.
Bussey in their places.
The grand jury was organized with
B. F. Melton as foreman, G. S. Crow
ell secretary and B. H. Brown bailiff.
The Judge’s charge covered the us
ual statutory subjects. One of the
first matters taken up by this body
Monday was the charge of murder
against Mrs. L. J. Atkinson, who is
alleged to have administered strych
nine to her brother-in-law, Wm.
Glaze. No report on the case has
been sent in by the grand jury, and
if a decision has been reached it
had not been made known when The
News went to press.
- Judge Worrill took up the civil
docket Monday morning, and has
since been engaged on it. The erim
inal docket will perhaps be reached
today or tomorrow.
There is a good deal of criminal
business, including four or five mur

session two weeks.
THE HISTORY CLUB.
The Study for the Year Will Be
American Literature.
The History Club held its first
meeting for 1909-1910 on Wednes
day afternoon at the library.: The
study for the year is American }it
erature, and the sketch papers for
the meeting of the past week were
sketches of the lives of some of the
writers of the early colonial periods.
Mrs. Guy Chappell's paper on ‘‘New
England Chroniclers’” was very in
structive, giving an insight into the
lives and customs of men and women
of the early days of our country.
The lives and writings of Increase
and Cotton Mather were treated in
a very entertaining style by Mrs. W.
B. Cheatham, showing the influence
wielded by these men on their gen
eration. Mrs. Perry Cocke's paper
on Jonathan Edwards and Miss May
Clark’s on Anne Bradstreet were very
much enjoyed. Mrs. E. T. Jordan
read a poem by one of the early
writers, which gave a good illustra
tion of the literature of the time.
Mrs. R. E. Bell gave current events,
which were instructive and enjoyved
by all. Roll call was answered by
with historical incidents of the co
lonial period.
