Mr. W G 'Wall, of the 11th dis~,
trict,“is one of the best farmers in
the county. He has improved his
land until he has got it in a -high
state of cultivation. I with four
other gentlemen looked over his
farm and pronounced his grop fine.
He has forty acres that we think
will make 25 bales, everything fav
orable from: now' eut; his corn
crop is fine; he has an acre in corn
with 8800 stalks on it and we be
lieve that he will be sure to get
75 bushels, at least, on the one
acre. The manure and work on
the acre isestimated at $20,00.
This is up land, no swamp.

the Smieafiable propei'ty-g
namely, the Western and Atlantic
Rale Rode, and Uncle Joseph
Brown’s connection with the same.
I'thought T would right you these
few lines and find out what you
_thought the “Atlanta Constitutlon”
‘'was goin to make the State do
Pbout this -matter of betterments
alluded to in Unele Joseph's letter
to Governor Gorden.- Unele Jos~
eph took chg;ge of this road in 18~
70, for the'term of twenty years—
now right here, I want to ax you a
question—do you think Uncle Jos
eph took this road to keep the state
from havin a ‘White Elephant’ on.
their hands? or do you -think he
took it in order to have the equiv.
ilent of & United States mint on
his hand? I know every body
says Uncle Joseph is a mighty pa
triotic citizen, and I reckon he is,
but that waz too mutch Elephant’
for one little man to try to manage
all for the good of his country.
Some folks seem to think that
Uncle Joseph hired this road and
paid a plenty for it, just like you
would do if you wuz to hire 2 horse
and buggy from Marshall & Alex
ander, while others claim that he[
got it on mighty nigh the same
terms that Mr. Turner Lewis gits
Jack Riley’s Texas pony and bug.
’gy when he wants to take a free
‘ride—but it is too late to be kick~
ing about the price now, for nears
ly eighteen years of the twenty is
gone, and if he did git the road on
good terms he done no more than
any other man would er done.
From what Uncle Joseph says,
when he got this road it must er
bin in about sitch ficks as the gray
mare that Tom Loyless got from
Mr. Jack Riley, and Uncle Joseph
' not bein able to use it in sitch a
condition went to work an put itl
in tip top order, and it is for this
order that Uncle Joseph wants to
tap the States treasury,
Now Mr, Editer, I want to ax
you another question, for I suppose
you will know all about it, if you
don’t you are ina bad ficks, for in
these days on times a Editer is
spected tc know every thing that is
‘and a great many things that ain’t
nor never will be, the question is
this—lf you had a peor horse,
worth $lOO in the spring of the
year when creturs is high, and
you decided that you did not want
te sell him but hired him out for
$2O for the year, in the course of
which time the man gits him fat,
and when he goes to turn the horse
over-to you in the fall of the year
he aint wortli'io more than he wf
as a poor horse in the spring,
but the man says yom, you
must pay me for fattenin this
horse, or I will let him git poor
before the tust of January—what
would you do. If you paid him
for betterments you would be a
heap flusher than I think you is.
Uncle Joseph says if old Georgia
don’t pay him, for them bétter
ments, he is going to commence
and run the rode down, Well we
bain’t never seen Uncle Joseph
running anything down in his pos
sesion, but if he succeeds at that
half as well as he does at running
Unecle Joseph up, you would have
to try it twice to git from Atlanta
to Chattanooga in 1890. Dr.Felton
says the road could have bin leas=
ed tor $35000,00 a month in 1870
and the doctor scarcely ever makes
a statement that he kan’t prove,
and if he kant the M. Doector
cin. What'will it-bring” now? 1
don’t surpose Uncle Joseph will
claim the development of the
country, which certainly ought to
increase the value of the road, but
givin the State credit for the in
creased local trade of the road, it
ain't worth as mutch now as it wuz |
in 1870. But Unele Joseph wants
a hand in the treasuary and he will
have to have it. He is the pillar
of the State, a powerful good man,
and to refuse him 2 or 3 million
dollars to add to the bor 6 mil~
lions he is already got would not
be showin Uncle Joseph any grati
tade tor the kind manner in which
he has conducted the ship of Siate
through many perilous storms and
stuck by his citizens |at Columbus
and other plaves like a brother.
Git ready Mr, Editer, taxes will
have to be increased to mise the 3
nilliens for Uncle Joseph, but he
is your friend and you shouldan’t
mind to help biu—-fiu will never
find another friend like bim.
Yours truly,
