They Want to Keep Cool., = .
Bumter Republican.]
Monday morning several young
men ennum[:hted presenting a pe
tition to the Mayor and City
Council praying that that august
body would graot them the privi~
lege of appearing on the streets
during this unprecedentedly hot
weather, in ‘mother hubbard’ cos
tumes. We judge that the peti
tion was not presented, but we
hear that our worthy County
Judge, who wore & ‘mother hubs
berd’ all last Sunday, says that it
is the most pieasant dress for the
weather he ever wore; and he has
our Superior Court Judge's word to
support his evidence, as that ese
teemed gentleman donned a simi
ler dress Sunday afternoon, and
sported his graceful figure to the
breezes, that wafted o'er the
riage. 1
Marriage, it seems to me, should
be waited for, not sought, Who
knows round what corner his des
tiny may be hiding—at what un
expected turn he may come upon
the face above all facos for him!
To put aside, as far as possible,
the' thought of marriage until
compelled to think of it by some
strong and special attraction to
ward some special person, is wiser
than to be seeking in every chance
acquaintance the possible hushand
or wife. ‘We ghall meet the peo
ple who are coming to meet us,’
no matter in what far of land
their journey towards us ‘begins.
Perhaps parents are more blame
for worldly marriazes than we are
apt to think. How constantly we
hear the terra ‘married well ap
plied, aot to character, congeniali
ty or true fitness, but to a comfor.
table income. And vet there is
something to be said tor ‘the stern
parent’ of the novels, with his
‘hard facts." This old adage, that
‘when poverty comes in at the door
love flies out at the window,’ is on
ly true of small and poor natures
=-natares incapable of a great
love; but it is, nevertheless, true
that to be Yoved it is necesary to be
lovely, and that it is far more diffis
eult to be lovely when we are hard
pressed by want and rendered fret
ful by care and overwork. Hu
man creatures cannot build their
nest as inexpensively as the bhirds
do; snd not even the scant hospi
tality of homestead eaves or ore
chard bouzhs awaits their fledg
lings. To marry for mouey or for
any object whatever save and ex
cept immortal ‘and all-powerful
love, is to perjure and debase the
human heart; but to marry withi
out some provision for the future,
such as money, or money’s worth
in a well furnished mind and a ca.
pacity for skilled labor, is te defy
common sense and invoke the evil
fates.
From statistics collected in parts
of the German empire, G. Hell
mann finds that the danger trom
lightning, though generally in
creasing, is diminishing in eertain
districts, the risk becoming less the
more closely houses are clustered.
The character of the soil has great
influeace. Letting 1 represent
the danger from lightning on calea
reous ground, 2 will give it upon
marly, 9 upon sandy, and 12 upon
clayey soil. Itis a curious faet,
not yet explained, that oanks are
struck more frequently than other
strees; so that if the danger for
beeches be 1, that for pines is 15,
and for oaks 54.
