A SADSUICIDE AT SHELL- |
MAN.
The Reason for the Rash Aet Un
‘ known.
Cuthbert Liberal.
Yesterday morning our commnu
nity was shocked by hearing that
Mre2 George W Oliver of Shellman |
had committed suicide. He was ]
depot agent, agent of the Southern l
Express company and Post Master
at that place. e was one ot ‘the
most influrntial and popular citi
zens of our community. He was
in easy circumstances and his do=
mestic relations were happy. He
was very cheerful yesterday morn
ing as was customary with him.
After breakfast he went around
town amonz the merchants
collecting freight bills and on re—
turning to the depot at h:lf past
eight o'clock, stepped into the tel
egraph office which adjoins his
own, with a door opening between
the two, Miss Mollie Lancester,
the operuior, was seated at the ta
ble. When he had entered the
door he turned round, closed and
locked it, remarking that he was
geing to kill himself, displaying at
that time a vial of strychnine. She
asked him not todoso, out he
drew out a pistol and told her if
she made any outery he would
kill her. Ile swallowed a large
quantity of strychnine, sat down
immediately in chair, placed the
muzzle of the pistol against his
heart and fired, killing himself in
stantly. These are tho particulars
as learned through Mr. C E Clarke,
who was there soon after the sad
ocenrence, Mr. Oliver was a user
ful citizen, a kind neighbor and a
true friend. He wasstrictlya sober
man, not having taken a drop of
intoxicants of any kind in many
years. e was a splendid business
man and was filling three impor~
tint places of trust, at the time of
Lis death. He was at all times
cheerful and had a pleasant
word tor every one. What mo
tives or reasons could have promp
ted the rash deed we are at a loss
conjecture,
Coming ome to Bie.
At a peviod of life when budding
womanhood requiresall herstrength
to meet the demands nature makes
upon it, many a youug woman re
turns home from the severe mental
strain ot school with a broken
down constitution, and her fune
tions disarranged, to go to an early
grave. If she had been wisely
counseled und given the benefit of
Dr. Pieree’s **Favorite Preserip
tion” her bodily development might
have kept pace with her mental
growth, and health and beauty
would not have given way to deo
cline aud death.
The State Fair.
As the time draws nearer the
indications are that there will be
one of the grandest displays and
the largest crowd at the coming
BState lair ever before seen in
Georgia. The press ana the peo
ple all over the State are growing
more and more inthusiastic and I
we fear that Macon will not be
able to shelter all of the visitors |
especially on the 28th and 27th.
O these days the old veterans will |
be there! Hon. Jefferson Davis
will be there! Generals Long
street, Hill, Colquit avd Gordon |
will be there and the torch-light
precession will be the grandest
ever seen in the Bouth. The
voung men of Macon and Bibb
county are tuking a great interest
in the matter and have written
letters to Mr. Davis and his
daughter Miss Winnie. The peo
ple of the South know that this
will be perhaps the last opportuni
ty they wi'l have of seeing the lead
er of the Lost cause and everybody
expects to be-in Macon,
The Portland (Me,) Press says: I
““Jeff Davis is to open the Georgia
State Fair at Macon and review
50,000 veteraps of the *‘lost cause.”
There is to be an artist prezent, to
put on canves a historical painting |
of the picture, We venture to |
say that the enthusiasm of Mr. Da- |
vis's reception will quite equal the
President’s at Atlanta.”

The Seven Anarchist Doomed.
The Chieago riot of a few months
back and arrest and imprisonment
of the leaders is well remembered.
They were tried and convicted but
their attorneys thinking that they
could save them from the gallows,
took their case to the Supreme
‘Court. On the 14th Tust this|
‘ court deliveredits opinion affirming
the decision ot the court below.
The execution will take place No
vember 11th.
This is a just verdict and these
bloody rioters ought to hang if
any murderer of the deepest die
ought to be puvished in that way.
The soomer a quietus is put on
these miserable blood-thirsty Anar
chists who would lead ignorant
'wen into murder and riot the bet
ter it will be for this eountry.
Uncle Sam will have to order
out his army at some time to
quell them and it seems ina short
while. The news of the court's
decision created the greatest ex
citen.ent and consternation all over |
{ the Narth and West and the social

His Anarchist paper, the Freiheit,

news came The forms were order

n otice saying that Le could not be
interviewed until 4 o. m. and

on the matter. Most’s editorial is
addressed to the workingmen of all
countries. e characterizes the
judges who made the decision as
“Infamous and hlood-thirsty fools,”
and the jury as corrupt. It pros
cecds, November 11 was the day
set for murder of these heroes.
Capitalists wisned to see blood flow
to show the people that they were
the law and could do as they are
pleased. Workingmen, will you
peacefully allow this to take place?
, allow the punishment of represen
tatives who have identified them

of your class?” He asks that no

Very wonderful machine. y it is

they do, they cannot do well.
