A Lillie Girl * s« rrieif Off l»y •-
Bear*
We have on record » very singular
deliveraaoo of* gill about three yuan
cld, to its parents, alter being cani and
off by a black boar, un i search of about
thirty-six hours through the forest by
the excited parent}. Too facts as roar
a.s wo can gather them, ere substantially
as follows:
Mr. Ilenry Fiynn lives about forty
miles east of this place, at or near th<
lodging camps of Mr Ludington. 11.-
started one morning to tike a horse to
pasture, about two miles distant from
the house, and as his little girl seemed
very anxious logo, be pgt her upon the
horse’s back, snd let ber ride a short dis
tance, perhaps forty rods tr tn the house,
where he put her down, and to'.d her to
run home. He noticed that tho child
was standing where be left bee, and on
looking back, after going a little further,
saw ber playing ori the sand. lie soon
passed out of sight, and was gone about
an hour, expecting cfoourse, that the
chili would return to the house after
playing a few moments. On r< turning
home ho made inquire about the child
of its mother, who said she had not seen
the child, and supposed he had tak n
her along with him. On going to the
spot where he left her, hes.w huge bear
tracks in the sand, and at once came to
the conclusion that the child had bceD
carried off by the bear.
1 he family immediately made search
through the forest, which was grown up
to almogtajuriglo, rendering thiiraearcb
v.ry slow. All day these aoxi ms pa
rents searched for some trace r-f their
childy nor did they stop when darkrio«s
came on, but remaiued in tho wo 4->,
calling the child by her name. Morn
ing came, arid their search was fruitless.
A couple of gentlemen looking at land
came to the house, and being informed
of the circumstance, immediately set out
to help find the child. The gentlemen
wauderod about, and as they wore pas
sing a swanijy spot where the uudere
growth was thick, they either called the
child or else were talking aloud, when
one of them heard tho child’s voice. He j
then called the child by name, and tuld
Ler to come out of the bushes. She re- ‘
plied tnat tho bear would not let her.
-The men then crept through tho brush, !
and when near the spot where tho child I
and bear were, they heard a spla.h in
the water, which the child said was the ,
bear. Ou going to her they found her !
standing upon a log extending about
halt way’across the river.
The bear had undertaken to cross the
river on the log, rnd being closely pur
sued, left the child and swam away.
She had received same scratches about
her face, arms and legs, and her clothes
were almost torn from tier b .dy, but the
bear had not bitten her 10 hurt her, on
ly the marks es his teeth boing found on
her back, where in taking hold of her
clothes to carry her, he had taken the
0 sh also.
The lift’e one says tho bear would
put her down occasionally to rest, and
would put his nose up to her face, wbeß
she W'-uld slap him, at and then the bear
would hang bis head by her side and
purr and rub against her like a cat. The
iuau asked hex if she was cold at night,
and she told theui the old hear lay and iwn
beside Inr aud put bis “arms” abound
her and kept her warm, though she did
net like his long hair. She was taken
home to her parents.
A Horrible Plaything.
We copy the following from a Du
bcquti paper :
“VV r e Lave often read, of children and
vecimous snakes playing together, but
wo never bad a ease come under our
immediate observation until yesterday.
In the afternoon the two little daugh
ters of Hr. C. C. Liebcn, aged three
and five yoars respectively, were en
gaged in playing in tho front yard of
their home on lowa stre t, between Sev
cth and Eighth, whon the eldest ran in
to the house aud told the servant girl to
run out and see her sister who was play
iag with a big Bnake. The servant
thought nothing of it, and continued
her work. In a few minutes the child
again besought her to go right out, for
the snake was hissing at ‘sissy.’ The
girl went out and was struck speechless
and made to grow pale ! On the brick
wall near the front gate sat the little
child, laughing at and palling a huge
snake on the head I The snake was
coiled up like a spiral spring, and with
elevated head and protruding fang", was
allowing the child to play with it. It
Was a blackish monster, streaked and
spotted with green. When the child
would cease patt ng if, the snake would
strike at the little one’s hand aud stif
fen as w-eparing to jump at the child.
Then the little one would tap its hold,
and it wonld lower its bead and remain
passive. The servant stood for a mo
ment unable to say a word. At last
she shrieked for Mrs. Liebcn, who came
out. She slso was seized with terror,
but waited only a second before she
seized her child and bore it away. A
lady who resides next door, alarmed by
the servant girl’s cries, had now arrived
upon the scene. Before tho snake un
ooiled itself, »hc threw a brick at it,
which struck upon its head and stunned
it. A man who was passing by then
stepped in and killed the snaked It
measured thirty-eight inches in length,
and was of the kind known as tho house
adder, the bite or sting of which is said
to be terribly poisonous. The child
had a narrrow escape from an awful
death,”
