physique of most of them, judge that
they are doing a good business. We
are glad to see our distinguished friends,

other business. Our experience leads
us to believe that the best place to set
tle differences between men is about six
miles from Judge or jury, and sixteen
from a Lawyer.

We were pained to see the conduct
of some young men on the cars of the
Southwestern Railroad, a few days
since. There was a time when ladies
were respected even by those who were
in liquor Not so now. Why is this ?
Pave we lost that, bearing and de«
meauor that once charao'erized the
Southern man? Are we willing to see
our mothers, wives, sisters and daugh
ters, subjeeied to the vu'gar slang of
the drunken rabble ? Will not lovers of
good behavior re olve to put a stop to
any conduct that is calculated to em

BoxroMs’ Horse Power was tes'el
yesterday before the Committee on
Machinery. As no mule was handy,
six men were substituted forone mu’e,
although tight is the rule. The six
propelled a forty saw gin with great
speed. Three were then taken off,
and the remainder found no difficulty
in driving it with a full roll, so that
three negroes can drive any man’s gin
fast enough with that, horse power
We understand the Committee ex
pressed themselves highly pleased with
the performance.
Thomas J Bottoms, of Thomasville,
is the inventor of this horse power,
and with T*r. W. J. Huntoon, of Al
bany, holds the proprietary right. L
