K.KM I Ll l n Vl,
God Uloim Hie Farm.
God bleu* the farm, the; do ro'd farm !
God bless its ev ry rod—
Where willing heart und sturdy arm,
Can earn an honest livelihood !
Gao from the coarse and fertile s- il
Wia back a recompense iur toil.
God bless each meadow, field and n?ok
Begemmed with fairest flowers 1
And every leaf that’s gently shook
By evening brews or morning
showers;
God bless them all ! each leaf’s a gem,
In Nature’s gorgeous diadem.
The orchards that in early spring
Blush rich with fragrant flowers,
Aod with each autumn surely bring
Their weal h of fiuits iu goldeu
sh wets,
Likepomvgranit.es on Aaron’s md,
A miracle fiorn Natuie's God.
And may he bless the fartn< r’s heme,
Wlie. e peace aud pleat y feign ;
No happier spot ’ue.tb iieuv. n’s high
domo
Doth this broad, beau’ious earth
contain,
Than where, secure from care and
strife,
The farmer leads bis peaceful life
A Thorough Preparation of
the Soil.
Below we publish one of a series of
letters, writtvn for the Washingl' n Ga
zettc, by a “Farmer,” giving practical
views of a thorough preparation of ibe
soil before planting. We believe his
experience and observation to be that
of every one who will adopt a like
method. Head what he says of Lis
own experience, and that ot others,
and do likewise:
‘•ln a recent communication, I inti
mated that you might exptot to hear
something soon on the subj ct of thor
ough preparation of the soil as impor
tant to an increase in the crops and
profits of agriculture, and to guard
against failures in dry seasons. Iu this
age of enlightenment, aud when there
is so much more science, tbau in the
days of our forefathers, brought to bear
upon farming in its various branches, it
would be iosulting to a'tcm, tto show
the advantage of, or use argument to
convince that thorough preparation of
the soil is productive of ibe best re
sults in farming Many, in various
ways, have tried this so successfully,
the pant dry, and especially hot sras' n,
they will do all ibey cau, to profit by
She lesson learned.
Last. July I saw a pi<-ce of hill cot
ton, and expressed tte opinion, tnat it
had too much dis ance in make a heavy !
crop. (There is u mu bum as to the i
distance in crops, nod beyond ilia' there
is great loss of gi u o.) A i. w day.
since, tbe Owner told me he would g t
2 500 pounds ot O’ ! .on to the a r, and
would have made 1000 more, if the
staud bad been go and, a> and tbe distance
4x3 instead o: 5 x 3 I ask and him
feowit Comptrei witb tie drill cotton
adjoining. Much Setter, did not suff. r
from drought aud heat, like ibat in
drill. Was the preparation, manuring
and cultivation the same ? Yes, only
the hill cotton bad two iunows in one
in laying oft the rows. To my miud,
that is tbe main secret of tbe d.ff rence,
both in standing drought and iD tbe
yield, though the drill ‘may have beeD
rather think and suffered thereby. A
small experiment of my owd in tbe
same way, convinces me ot ibe fact, in
a piece of cotton fertilized last year,
rows ruu in middh 8 this year a few were
left unlertil zrd, wlil bo h sides w. re
lertilized heavily, with Dickson, the
other with Rawbone. All prepared,
plautcd and worked alike, only the few
rows nut lertil z and, bad an extra fur
row ruu in the opening one. Ail tad
au extra lurrow in the beddiog tuirow.
Tbe rows thus left are not actually so
good as tb' se on either side, tut com
paratively —expense cous dered—lully
so. Ala- mer toll me u few day
since, that b< bud never g-th-nd It. r
oorn from his low grouues though
somettmis ho bad made more bu-hels.
He attribu es tbe ix ra q tali y to a
plowing he gave the ground last 8 p
t mber and O tol er, turning in we« ds
from two to tifeet high, t.g>ih r
with a little extra prepualum at plain
ing time. None are so b.indcd as .o
deny tbe advantages arising from a
thorough prepared n os the soil, for udv
crop; but many say we havu’t tiuie to
prepate any better aud get our crop
pluoted in time,' There is aD old, but
none the less true adage, that “what
ever is worth doing at all, is worth do
ing well.” The way to make time ia
tbe end, is to take lime in tne begin
ning, aud by doiogst, you aid find tba
you have gained instead of lost ime.
Planters of experience aud succe a wil
tell you, that a crop well planted, in
well prepared groui-d. is fretn a naif to
two-tbirds made when the planting is
well done. A successful corn rat- er
when arked, when he planted corn, ie
plied, when I am ready, and never oe
l'ore. He was governed more by tbe
condition of bis land than tbe season ;
though be planted tar.y, for be always
began Lis pr puratiou in time to te
ready early. But tn-ugh all adm.t
tbe importance of a w. I. y,, p*red sup,
