AGRICULTURAL.
Fertilizer**
All farmer* know tbe value of cotton
gtd»* » ferti! *r, but it ;* clearlj pro
ven that the meal, after the seed is
hulled and the oil extracted, is even far
superior to the fresh seed. Col. I.ang
d'io, in bis address before the Scinra
Fair, says of this fertiliZ'r :
Every man who 'u’tivaies the soil
knows tb‘»t if he returns tr the snt ,
evety year the crops grown upou it, the |
toil will never dcpr.ciate in fertility
Now, if y 'U wete to return to the soil
every year, the entire cu p of cotton
which that soil produced, its fertility
would never be impaired. But, if you
cannot return the entire crop, use all
that oan possibly be made av-ilable. It
is always a sate rule to follow. Now,
in cotton, the lint, which constitutes the
entire mi ni y value of the crop, emnot
of course be u-cd in that, way, but ("*”
tunate'y for us—aud it is a iac of o •*
seeding interest to tbe plan er this val
jkble lint appiopriatea to i 1 self but an
inconsiderable p rtion of the fertilizing
material necessary to its production,
and const quently would be of little va -
ue as a fertiliz r All, or nearly all,
of the iogredicntv 'bat coustitute the
fertilizing eleineot are concentrated in
the seed—that cotton seed winch, ui.d'-r
the old sysitn, was tr> ated as of D.>
Value, aud permitted to do and rot in
immeuse heaps a ouud our g n hous's.
A moment’.. r> fl etion only is necessary
to force upou us this prto ical t u'h
that this neglect cotton .eed furui.-bes,
more surely thau anytl ing else possibly
can, the elemt nts necessary to ke< p up
the foriility of the soil, and is cen-e
--qucatly the very best fer lliz r that can
be applied. But there are some inter
esting facta connector 1 with the use ot
er ttou seed meal which it is important
should be understood. I has b*-cn as
cern.i ied by careful analysis that cotton
seed, btS.dea containing a large p/rtion
of pet-ish aud tbo pbospl a'es, is ex
ceedingly rich in unrogeo and hydro
gen, together forming ammonia, a mos;
iu porlaut element in tbe production el
crops, aud which constitutes the chi* i
value of Pcruviau guano. Now, if the
seed he permuted to lie in large bra, s
and rot belore a plying it to the soil, a
large pur.ion of amuu nia is driven rUt
in the pr* cess ot decomposition, e. •»
v npes into the atuio.-pbeie, and is forever
lost to he soil. Another prac ice is, 10
scatter fresh seed in the d* ill, cover up
and permit it to tspn J nnd then chi j
down the sprouts, lcaviog the s ed t<
decompose in the ground, ami thus lur
nish uuiriimnt to tlie soil. Although
not st> ol jectiouablc as tbc other plan
still by tbo process ol germination i
portion of the uiliogenous m.teriat is
exhausted, and you tail to rcai-z; the
full value of the seed as a manure
The only process by which the whole
can be saved is by gr nl ng ibe fresh
seed and reducing it to m al. iij this
process —si parating it from tbe oil,
which emcis larg.oy in o its eompo.-i
--ti ,u—you save ev. ly thing that is ol the
least value as a fertii z r; and, by lo
ing completely pulver z and, you have u
in a shape to be iuinndiaiely available
to the plant. Aud, as tb ■ oil is eutire
ly dcstiiu'e of if.rogen or ot,.rr fcitili
zmg property, and iu-tead ol being
beucficiai, is ab olutely rtij.rious to tbo
soil, it follows that the meal freed from
tbe oil is much lie her in albuminon
material, ana, therefore, more valu.Lit
as a fertilize s* *hao the unground seed.
And, it is doubtless true luat a co.tuu
planter may soil his co toa seed to tbe
manufacturer of oil, and take h's | a
ib meal, and what be g. t- of the later
will be of more value It fertiliz og
ptrpotes thau if he had used tbe liesh
unground seed upou big land. Wc
have the highest scientific autuority fi r
this conclusion. Another laot demands
notice. Analysis has shuwu that c t
ton seed meal contains an undue propor
tion of uitrogrn, as compared with tbe
phosphate, hence, to answer perfectly
all the deu.auds ot the plaut and make
aperfeot fertilizer, phosphate mutt be
added. The meal Bhould be mixed with
fine ground In ne in tbe proportion ol
two parts of the former to ut ••f the
latter—or jerhaps in about rquxl pro
portions—before applying to the soil.
Aud then, if a mall portion of plastei
and salt le added—thj former to fur
nish sulphate of lime and tbe latter
soda—both of which enter to a sina 1
extent into the composition of the cot
ton plant—you will have a frrtiliz r a
near perfection as could be devised, and
as valuable for corn as for cotton In
deed there is no crop on which cot-on
seed meal may cot be applied with bi n
sfir, for the elements of which ii i»
mainly composed-potash, phosphate
ar.d auimoni*—eit-r, mire or leis, into
the composition of all plants that grow
upon t> c earth.
