Want of Labor. —We regret to hear that many farmers of this section are felling a part of their plow teams in consequence of a failure to get labor. A few substantial, good planters have, bo far, failed to get a single freedman. Those who have succeeded have gone vigorously to work for the crop of 1870. May they have good seasons, > &nd harvest rich yields. Tan “lalbotton Standard.” —The first number of this new weekly is on our table, and from its general make up pronounce it a wide awake, live newspaper. Wo looked for a good paper, and have not been disappointed. AVhen Col. G. puts his hands and j train to work, something good is the result. Wo welcome the Standard among our exchanges, and extend the fight hand of fellowship to the Pro prietors, Messrs. Gorman & Water- Wan, with the hearty wish that they BWy succeed beyond their expectation. Marrying. —Our Ordinary reports a good business in tho sale of Mar riage License. Look sharp,'hoys ! We heard of a man loosing his crop °n acoount of marrying in the spring. Attend to this business early, or the honeymoon will not be over in time to look after the crop. Don’t make any difference when a town loafbr marries, Or whether ho marries at all or not; and he fails to make money, or a living, uo one is hurt but the lady he marries. - ot so with farmer boys ; if they merchants, doctors, lawyers, editors, even the loafers, suffer. W vnuu’iiouif Boors, Shoes, Ac.— Warm and dry foot is a prerogative to heultli, and it is economy to buy the best of auy article one may need. More especially is it tho case in buy ing boots. Call on Mr. Fitzgerald, at Messrs. Alexander & Parrot’s and see tho host lot of htmd-niado Boots now iu tho city. Also examine his Ladies’ and Children’s rihoos. Give Fitz. u call, and if you don’t agree with us wo. will acknowledge that wo do not know a good Boot or Shoo when wo see it. Mass Meeting in New York in Be half of Cuban Independence.—Now York, Janury 19.—An immense mass meeting in favor of Cuban indepen dence was held this evening at Cooper Institute. Many of our most promi nent citizens were on tho platform. Horace Groely presided, and made a speech favoring belligerent rights to Cuba. Ho also announced that Gor rit Smith had contributed sl,OllO to the cause of Cuba. Cassius M. Clay made a speech relating mainly to him self, and was in consequence not fa vorably received. Addresses were al so made by Col. Tomlinson and oth ers. Resolutions were read by Mr. Clay, and adopted, expressing sympa thy lor the Cubans, and urging the Administration to recognize them as beligerents. Tho chairman read a resolution favoring the establishment of a Cuban charitable aid society, which was adopted. The meeting soon after separated. MARRIRD.
