This is an established depart
ment of our paper, and it is our desire
to publish, from time to time, such ar
tielos as will be of practical benefit to
some of the many readers of the Jour
nal. To this end we solicit contribu
tions from our farmers, giving their
practical experience in the manage
ment of crops generally, experiments
with fertilizers, management of stock
&c. "Wo also solicit contributions from
housewives —many ol whom we are
confident can send us receipts, give
their experience in the management
of culinary affairs etc., which would
be valuable information for the more
ignorant in such matters. Who doos
not derive the advancement of all the
arts and sciences ?
Tlie Labor
The Orangeburg Ntw* says emphat
ically that where farmers do not get
what hands they want tins year, “ tis
their own fault.” Much land has
been sold to colored men, who are
building and settling upon it; but this
does not hinder tanners from contract
ing with these very men. A gentle
man in the country has rented lands
to families all around him. The men
of these families aro to work in his
contract for ono third, as heretofore.
The women are allowed to work the
land rented to the family, the owner
having a lien on their crop for the
payment of the rent. The owner, also
by the tornis of the contract, at certain
times can call on all the hands at so
much per day to work in his crop. —
This farmer always has as many hands
as'he wants. By this arrangement,
says our cotemporary, the colored man
Inn his home, his family working for
him and f< r themselves. Tho rest of
it is rented out to good saving tenants.
Now, even suppose the laud is sold,
instead of rented, to these families,
tho same plan can operate, and the
same security is given for hands for
the planter, and a hen secures tho pay
ment for tho purchase of tho land.—
And tliis latter is bettor, inasmuch as
tho security to both is permanent, and
not temoprary, for one year. The
colored man is settled and happy and
tho planter has hands around him
ready at his command. Mutual l'or
bearance and kindness on either side
will secure contentment and prosperi
ty to both. Tho colored man is not
avaricious—he is satisfied with com
fort. By this means ho realizes the
wish of his heart—to have a home.—
Ho is elevated as a man and a laborer.
Ho has every inducement to bo honest
as a man, and industrious as a labor
er. He is rendered contented and
bappy. It, takes very little to make
him happy, and ho has a right to be
happy. Without some such plan as
this, the same difficulty will aii.se each
year for hands. And it will increase
evory year, for the colored man is re
solved to have a homo and start in
life.
Those calm and sensible words ai '
well worthy of general consideration.
Colored labor is the orly labor that
wo can command ; colored people have
the political control of the State.—
Surt ly, then, it is wiser to make the
colored men our friends and fellow
laborers in a common cause, than to
aggravate the distrust and dislike
which are already too bitter and too
deep for the good of our State and
people. —Chur lesion News.
W liter for Horse*.
Mr. B. Cartledge, of Sheffield, a
member of the Veterinary College,
calls attention to the very common
mistake inado by keepers of horses in
limiting the supply of water to their
animals. Many owners of horses,
most grooms, and others who have
the charge of them, profess, he says,
“to know how much water a horse
ought to be allowed, and, when a poor,
thirsty, over-driven animal arrives at
his journey’s end, he is treated to a
very limited supply and the pail is
taken away before its necessity is hall
met. It is a mistaken not.on that
cold water frequently produces “colic.”
I have known it cure the disease.—
When cold water does cause abdimo-1
nial pain, it is from long abstinence,
and when the horse drinks to excess.
But even this is rare. 1 allow my
horse to drink from every trough i ■
meet on the road, if the water be
clean, and, in my own stud, I never
had a case of colic. At home, my
horaes always have water beiore them
A friend oi mine, to whom, the other
a J> i gave this advice, directed his
servant to adopt. The servant shook
his head, and said, “he tuought he
knew as well as Mr. Cartledge when
his horses required water and how
much.” The owner, in reply, told his
servant that might 1 e so, and he must
all «w lus horses to drink as often and
(-S freely as he and and himself.— English
