Crushed Cotton Sectl us a Fer
tilizer.
Editors Southern Cultivator : I desire
to d.ftot- the attention o! your numer
ous subscriber to tbe vast benefit de
rived from crushed cotton seed as a fer
tilizer. My plan for crushing was to
pas-i the seed through my sytup mill.
1 prepared 10 bushels in this way as an
experiment ; after which, having pack
ed them away ia one bushel of lime,
{spr nkled 1 ghtly through them,) I sj
leo ed 4 acres of land. Oo one of
these, I used five Lushols t.f crushed
seed under eotton, drilled in before bed
ding. 1 also prepared another acre
with ut cru.-hed seed, drilled likewise
I gathered from tbe acre manured with
crushed seed 1400 lbs. seed cotton—on
that manured wi-th uncru-hcd seed,
1000* I also prepared two- acres ot
similar lands fur O'ro—on one of these
I placed crushed seed neat the corn at
lime of plan ing ; the other uncrushed
seed. I realized 30 bushels from the
cruel el, and 19 from the uncrushed,
and l am folly satisfied that the planter
would be amply paid for bis trouble iu
cru-hing the seed. Caquot a simple
machine be invented which several hun
dred bushels eou'd be crushed in a day
by horse power ? VAN DE WERI'. j
