AGRXC ULTURAL. Fio.n the S il ol the S>>ti'h. Tlia Trca I r.i eu i mid l iiltiva li »nos Cord. Bi' THK LVTE J.IMEi 'I. CHAMBtiIH. ****** * * * * IKE MODE A> D II M-: OF I'LANfIXU. In a climate with summer* as long and hot as outs, and where drought so ii'jquontly occurs in those hot mouths, it is of indispensable imjtortanee that this crop should be planted j net us soon as the frosts may bo avoided. And it Biav bo remarked in this connection, that this plant, though tender, is not easily killed to the root, aud the mere nipping of tin* young leaves of the corn does not materially alfoot its ultimate yield ; and that we should not therefore be deterred, by any of there apprehen sions from early pleating. THE DEPTH OF PLANTIN'). The roots of corn are almost all la teral, ami come on, near the surface ; and it is therefore a matter of great importance to have the seed will de posited in the ground. To do this, the opening furrow for planting should be deep, bo that the tendency of all the after workings would be to increase the depth of earth upon tho roots. The seed, when deposited in row, should be covered to tho depth of one and a half to two inches, with soft, fine earth, placed there bv the plow or hoe—the latter 1 think best. Three or four grains should be dropped, when only one is to be left, it being much better to thin out than to have to replant. It is a debut ible qu -si ion, an l there fore one about which there is a dith-r --enco ofopiuion, ns to whether tho Dill or Dnil planting* or the one or the two stalk system is tiro host. Circumstances must necessarily enter very largely in to the tlie settlement of thee' questions; and after ail. the discretion of tho planter must lie often left to settle thesfi llv thoorv aud plans are made 10 suit t'ne c minion uplands of the country, aud may therefore lie depart ed from as occasion and difference to drill plan ing, because of the greater regularity of distance, the greater cer tainty of a perfect stand, and the great er ease with which it may be cultivated and prefer one to two stalks iu the hill because it is more easily cleaned with tho plow or hoe—better sustained, as the one receives all the food from the soil which would otherwise be diveded —because it will bear drought with less damage-arid finally, though other plans may produce more oars, those on the one stalk will be the stronger, equal in quaniity anl better in tile quality of the corn. Having settled the preference for one stalk in tb ■ hill, ttu D usance re mains to be given. 1 should advise tho cheeking to bo four and a halt feet one way, by three aud a half tho other I should then expect to make tho crop, alter this preparation, with throe plowing*—tho first to bo give the narrow way of the rows, and tile two la t the wide way. The crop is now plautel, and a very impoituit p i t oi the work is disposed of. TMods of ('.(Hurt remains to bo told I will preface that part of my essay with tins remark : That how ever much ullm tiling may admit of delay and negb ot. iliat the coin never recovers from in i y of tins soit. It requires to be worked early, rapidly, and to be disposed of soon. As soon us u.e third aim fourth blades have made their app arance, let the opper ati n be cotniut-need. The plow run ni ig next to t ie young plnnt should 1 (■ narrow and long, so that the earth may be broken very deep and close to the young corn, uml yet it is not cov ered. The best plow in common use for that purpose, is the scooter or colter. The tatter, in lands that are at all ten acious or close, is decidedly preferable. If this opperation is as complete as it should be, all the earth about '.ho roots of the plant will loosened ; and when the middle of the row shall have been also broken dn ■ ■]> and close, the young r >oU which soon shoot out in g eat numbers, in search of food, will easily penetrate the soft earth and find then appropriated supplies, and impart health and vigor to the young stalk. The hoes should follow the plows in this operation, perfecting the work by thinning to one stalk, and giving the It 11 a nice die sing, leavingi perfectly mean, and returning a little more earth to the root of the corn. In about twenty days, or three weeks, the work ing should be repeated. If the plow work has been very thorough ut the first operation, it need uot now bo quite so deep or close as before, but nearly so, using some plow next the corn which will tumble the soft earth about the roots, covering all small grass, and saving much labor to the hoe hands. At this time, the hoes should pass over it again, thinning out all surplus stalks; pulling off suckers, straighten ing the bent stalks, aud making clean all which the plows may have failed to do. In three weeks more the third aud last working should be given. This is an important crisis, and much must be committed to the j udgement of the operator. No work requires the exercise of a sounder discretion than that to be given to the corn, in this advanced stage and hot season. Ordinarily the work should be much more shallow and less dose than the former workings, using sotno plow which should not penetrate deep, but which would leave the surface as soft and smooth as possible. To make the corn perfect, the hoes should pass over again, aid make all complete and dean, But if ample justice had been done in the lurmer workings, not much wiil remain now for the hoes to do. Be fore the commencement of this last plowing broadcast with ptas about ten or twelve quarts to the acre ! and the work will be complete In every woiking to be given tho corn, it would I be greatly preferablo to have the j ground wet, or rather in good moist condition; but it is bad policy ever to delay these operations for more than two or three days, at most, to wait for the seasons, holding the maxim that, “He that rogardoth the wind in seed ; lime, shall not reap in harvest.” ESTAELISHiD i WEtiH & liRiFFiTHS, flaws I Axe* ! saw* !
