Ol course we can't honor tlieso ex. ercises with the name of Commencement, as tills cognomen belongs to Oellrgcs alone ; hut vertuie the opinion, that a closer examiuu 'ion ol pupils has not been had with greater credit to teachers «|id pupils, in any of our sistii cities with Colleges. We were pleas'd to seij so many of the patrons and friends ol education attending the examination, and more pleased to hear a favorable report from each and every ojie. We will not personate, as all tha classes from those composed of Uule girls and boys to the young ladies and gentlemen, acijuiited themselves in such a manner ns to retie et credit ou the teachers, and make the heaits of their patents feel r. j deed at their, rapid prupress. We wtert also pleased to see that particular atteution had been given to spell ing, reading Htid punctuation. We have seen graduates that were deficient in these | particulars. 0;i Thursday n’gbt t'.e soul stirring notes of the Dawson Band drew to Masonic Ha 1 large audience to hear the speeches of the boys, and listen to the reading of the com positions of the girls and young ladi's. The compositions were, of course, nl) original , and those we heard wero good indeed ; some of the girls spoke so hw that the audience, afsor .- training all their hearing faculties in vain to- catch the subj-'ct matter, became restless,.arid the consi q ence was a general conversation* Those who read in a tone Burticiently iou 1 to be heard, had the atten tion of the entire bouse. With the host of feelings to all teaohere, we question the p o priety of bringing a girl or young lady be fore an audience, who has not strength of lungs sufficient to enable her to speak loud euough to be heard. Those who are not de ficient iu this particular, and from other con siderations fail to elevate their voice boas to be heard, should not be forced on an audi ence. Friday night, before’ a note had been sounded, JAasoiiic Hall was crowded—riot even good standing room left. After the pitying of a few pieces by the band the por lormance commenced,.and the audience, in the face of extreme Heat, was pleasantly eu- j tertained until after mid igbt listening, to | charades, dia'ogues, with dramatic scenes, ititetspeised with vocal and instrumental music bv Mis. Gentbmen": "We, tlio undersigned, having been appointed a Board oi' Vis itors to attend the Commencement ex orcises of LeVert Female College, and to report upon the preliminary exami- i nation o tlio clfUsos, having discharg ed the duties assigned us, beg leave to j submit to your honorable body the ! following report: Wo would tender you our eongrntu- ; latious upop tho increasing prosperity j of this college, both iu numbers and in ; the efficiency of its organization ; and assuming the recent examination a correct criterion by which to judge, assure you that it lollects credit upon the officers and pupils of the college, : and secures the approbation of every : member of Board of \ isitors. Deeming it impracticable b) embrace the details of each recitation within the limits of this report, we content ourselves by calling your atteution to some features of superior excellence which came under our consideration. The classes in the higher branches of mathematics, -under the supervision of President Moore, demonstrated the most difficult problems with a facility that was as gratifying as it was sur pt istng, clearing tho female sex from the aspersion that they are incapable ol’ pursuing abstruse scientific research to its farthest limits. The superior fatalities aiforiled by this institution for the acquisition of a •correct knowledge of natural science, and of ancient and modern languages, seem to be fully appreciated by the young ladies under the tutorage ol Professor Manget who evince a ready knowledge of the Trench and Batin languages tunl of the sciences of natu ral phylosophy and chemistry. This latter department is provided with su perior chemical and philosophical ap paratus, VI itch in its variety, elegance and beauty of finish, affords unusual facilities for practical experiments in illustrating the principles of chemistry. The Academic and Primary Depart ments, under the control of Misses Williams and Jackson, afforded grati fying indications that great care had boon taken- in laying the foundation upon which to build the superstructure of a finished education. The discipline of the college ini j pressed us very favorably. It is mild, vet firm. The pupils evince ft high degree of respect for their teachers by uniformly courteous obedience to the rules of the college. It is due the officers and pupils to* state that it is the Unanimous convic tion of the Hoard of Visitors that the examinations were thorough and im partial. It was impossible for the young ladies to know, beforehand, the subjects on which they would bo ex amined, as these were chosen by lot during the recitation. It vas evident, likewise, that the pupils understood tho subjects under consideration, ami were not merely repeating passages from books with a mechanical precis ion that betrays its superficiality. Your appreciation of our commen dation of the officers and pupils lor I skill and proficiency will lie enhanced I i,y tj,e recollection that the curriculum I of the-college has-been advanced to a I higher grade than had heretofore ob ! tamed, and which places this institu ! tiou on an equal footing with thelead ! jug female colleges in the land, xnat | there are no graduates on this occa sion is attributable to the fact that the Juniors of the preceding year preferred to be kept back, appreciating the ad - I vantages of a higher grade of schcdar | ship as a full compensation for the nec essary detention. | ~n V l6 , 51 popartinout, under the control of a faithful amtcOmTWfenf di rectro BMI Miss Gallic 1! The Ornamental Department, ft as boon recently organized, and is under tho charge of Miss Josephine B. Jack son, a lady well qualified, in every re spoot, for tho position. Drawing, pas- j tel, oil painting, figure.- iu wax, em broidery, etc., are taught, and tho spe cimens evince rapid progress iu a short time. Wo would call particular attention to the Department of Calisthenics, al so ron tly introduced. This dej lartmeut affords that which is essential to a j thorough education—physical devolop- I ,a °ut Tho series of movomfliits ftieet j tho approval of modieal men of emi noneo in their profession, as well cal culated to strengthen tho lungs and expand the chest. In our judgment it j is calculated to promote gracefulness I as well us health. In conclusion we beg leave to as-! sure you that the foregoing common- | dations and suggestions were not has- j tily or informally reached, but that tho Board of Visitors held several j meetings, canvassing the subject tlior- j oughly, each member speaking freely his own convictions, and wo respect- l fully offer yoif this as the result of our 1 deliberations. A Painful Rumor.— lt is rumored that His excellenecy is exerting his influence with the members of the Legislature to secure tho passage of a bill for the organization of the militia. One rumor has it, that forty regiments are to he organized and equipped! This is startling and painful, if true. We earnestly hope it is not so, and if not true, the Governnor owes it to himself and the public to contradict it It will be a pleasure to us to know that he is misrepresented, although wo remember that with Governoi Scott, of South Carolina; and others, at a mass meeting in Washington some time back, he advocated the necessity of putting rifles in the hands of “loyal men.” Are rue, in a time of profound peace, to have inaugurated in our midst the enormities which were? practiced iu Tennessee and Arkansas by the militia, under the pretence-of protecting loyal m n? Heaven forbid ! But we cannot believe, Avhatcver may be llis Eecelleucy’s wishes in this re spect, that tho Legislature aa ill sanction such au unnecessary and dangerous measure.— True Georgian. Our Chops.— Wo are pained to givo our planting friends the following unpromising report from our corn crops in the West, which we find in a Wes tern exchange: The crops through the region of Chicago are suffering greatly from drought, and heat In many places the small grains and grasses are ruin ed.
