Arrival df the Surveyin; Party
--Hht* Line to Albauy.-The

The Surveying Party, thirteen in
number, engaged for some time past j
in revising tho line of Survey from J
Albany to Eufaula, arrived hero j
Wednesday, and are encamped about!
three miles from Eufaula. We had
the pleasure of a call Thursday, from
J. J. Pratt, an intelligent and practic-!
al Engineer, who was years ago at- j
tached to the Mexican Boundary <Jom
raission, and is familiar with the whole '
lino of tho Southern Pacific Road,
Having more than' once made the trip
to San Dirgo, California, sometimes:
on horse back, and often aft ot.
It is the purpose of the Surveying 1
Party to make another revision of tho
line to Albany, whon the route will
be selected and permanently located.
As wo have said before the probabili
ties iuclino to tho adoption of the Cot
ton hill route, which appears to be
more feasible and practical, as wall as
economical It estimated that the;
careful revision of the lino surveyed
and alterations made, will save the;
Company not less than $50,000 to $75,- 1
000. At one point tho line runs under
the South Western Railroad at Ilarri- j
son’s Mill; runs some distance down
Tobenahnee t crosses the Chat-1
tahoochee about a mile below tho
South Western Road bridge; and
comes into town, at or near the Bruns
wick and Vicksburg Depot.
The report that the Road would in
tersect the South Western Road at
Cuthbcrt, and merge into that portion
thence to Eufaula, is without founda- '
dation and never had an existence
save in the discussion of that question
in Cuthbcrt arising from the natural
desire of that place for the arrange
ment, which would advance the inter
ests of that town. The wish was sim
ply the father to the thought.
Tho Company', many of the chief;
stockholder residing in New York,
have ample means, and there is no
doubt that the Road to Albany will be I
built. In fact,-it is understood, that \
one contract has already been taken
from Albany to Alapalia, about twon-!
ty miles, and the balance oi the line j
will soon be in responsible and efficient
hands. Work will probably be com ■
menced in about two months. Noth
ing definite has yet been done with re- !
gard to the Eufaula end of the line, •
but we hope it will be to the interest!
and convenience of the Company to
have the work progressing on each]
end simultaneously.
The Surveying Party will remain
near Eufaula several days, and then
return to Albany on the work of revis
ion. They have been in camp, and in
the field running lines, and revising
between Eufaula and Albany, almost
w ithout interruption since March last.
Before many moro months have rolled
away their rounds of time we hope to
see their valuable labors end in the
fruition of tho iron horse and train,
daily annihilating timo and space bo
tween our city and Albany, thence to
the “city by the sea.”-— Eufaula News.

Tho practice leads to tho disturbance
of the peace and good of society, by
encouraging tho idea that the securi
ty of the citizen can best bo protected
by personal effort and revenge, and
not by the enactment and the enforce
ment of law This is the law of the
savage, not of civilized communities.
Wo have not the slightest design or
desire to deny the citizen the right
and duty to possess arms for self-de
fence. In our sparse population it.is
not only the right but tho duty of tho
citizen to possess arms for his protec
tion. But this does not imply the
right to degrade tho law and to de
grade society to the standard of tho
Sioux Indians by encouraging the
cowardly practice of carrying conceal
ed weapons.
A company has been organized in
New Orleans for the application of
condensed air as a motive power for
street railways. The cylinders are to
be of paper and placed on top oi the
ears. A triall has been made with
this method, and a car with twenty
eight passengers was driven three
miles and a half in seven and a quar
ter minutes.

A Rkmarkabck Accident.—A friond
informs us of a most romarkablo and
painful accident which occurred ou a
freight train of tho Macon and- Bruns
wick railroad, on Monday last, the
particulars of which were ;
One of the train hands borrowed
from a passenger a pistol and seated
himself, pistol cocked, ready to take a
crack at tho first alligator he might
see as the train was running, when
suddenly n sharp report of the pistol
was hoard and a small child foil dead
on the side of the road. It appears
that a party of children had assem
bled ou the side of the road in tho vi
cinity erf No. 7, in Appling county,
with their Lands filled with fruit,
which they commenced throwii g to
the passengers and hands, an apple
striking the finger upon the trigger
which throw the fatal ball. Wo did
not learn the name of the child or its
bereaved parents.
