Letter front Houston County—
A Him Ueootve.
Holloman’s Stouk, HorsTi-A-Co., Ga. ?
October (fifth, 1?70. $
Editor* Telegraph §' Mutenger : I
have notiood in recent numbers of
your paper, reports from several coun
ties in this State, and will be greatly
obliged to have u abort notice of Hous
ton m your columns.
The spirit of despondency seems
hovering with appalling gloom over
the entire couuty. Jhe people are in
deed low-spirited, and nil business ap
pears at a A rJoct stand-still. Cotton
crops are generally estimated at two
thirds ; corn where much was planted
and tolerable attention given, has
turned out satisfactorily. As Hous
ton is remarkable for being a cotton
county, the attention of tie people this
year has been solely devoted to tur 1
cotton; on the proceeds of which they '
are totally dependent for supplies an- j
other year; you cannot doubt, then, (
that the recent distressing decline in j
the market is plainly depicted in the ,
countenance of every farmer’, lluu- '
dreds of bales will be shipped to mar- j
ket, the inevitable prey of the draft.
Fertilizers were very extensively ap
plied, which have proved, in a major
ity of instances, utterly worthless.
This is a very prevalent complaint,
and the farmers vow to pay for their
adulterated guanos only at the extent
of the law; the vendor, however—•
not the. cotton factor—should sulfer
for such frauds. The feeling now ex
isting is to make an entire change in
the mode of planting ; to stop the
production of such overwhelming
quantities of cotton and raise moie
provisions at home.
A meeting of a newly organi
agricultural club was held a secu id
time at the above named place on too
Btn ult., the object ol which is to pro
mote the interest of and insure a sup
port for farmers—employer and c r
ployed. At the first call of some of
the prominent farmers to meet for the
purpose of creating such an associa
tion, twenty-four names were enrolled,
and at the second meeting the number
was increased to thirty-one. The
ofiicois of this club are anioug Hous
ton’s first men—Dr. L. B. Alexander,
President; George M. i'eagiu and M.
Fnderick, Esqs., Vice Presidents, and
Gejige H. White, Esq., Secretary and
Treasuror. These leading planters
and influential men have wisely formed
the determination to* make a radical
change in the preseint plan of farming
mutually agreeing among themselves
ami pledgeing their utmost eudeavors
to persuade others, to reduce those
wide extended cotton fields and plant
oxtertsively iu corn, wheat, rye, outs,
potat'9B and peas Mr. Feagin, at the
last meeting, moved that some means
be adapted ‘‘to remove the corn ciib
and moat house of every man in Hous
ton trom the city of Macou.” This mo
tion, proceeding from a man renowned
as well for truth, justice and benevolence
as for long expeiieuee in agricul
ture, received a harty response ; and
though our company contained
none of the scions of Cicero, yet it were
indeed entertaining to hear the laconic
common-sense, practical speeches in
dt-lense of the motion of Mr. Feagin.
And surely, defense is not au applica
ble term, as each member exhibited
tho greatest zeal and alacrity to express
his views and use his mite of argument
for curtailing the cotton crop. Each
one firmly declared that lor three
years past he had, pecuniarily, been
on the de lino, notwithstanding the
most rigid economy, and that unless a
speedy change was elfectcdthis country
would be impoverished and the cry of
bread re-echo through the land.
They correctly expressed the idea that
the amount of raw material is too enor
mous, and must needs be diminished iu
order that the whi.e man and negro be
insured a support in ra sing cot-iui.
What has produced this startling
reaction in the cotton market '( What
is it that forces the lariner to unavoid
able, totai loss, when the combined
prospects of the spring promised such
handsome rewaid for a twelvemonth
of uuermitting labor and annoyance
with the lieedinan ? 'l'hsu the over
whelming amount of cotton now flood
ing the market, having been promptly
prepared to meet the draft. And it is
as remarkable as true, that a the
prices of cotton decrease, the prices
of provisions as regularly increase. 1
“Why,” asks the almost despondent
farmer, “do you rise so much on your
corn ail bacon, Mr, Merchant i 1 ”
The war, the war says he. “Ah,”
sighs the farmer, “the Tennesseean,
Ohioan and Kentuckian are fully
aware of the condition of the South
for supplies; they know we cannot
sutler our wives a children to starve,
that our energies have been applit 1
to the culture of cotton, while the hog
and cornfield have been neglected
Knowing our situation, therelure, they j
unmercilully double, triple tho prices j
of corn and bacon.”
A Mr. King, a small farmer, felt very
sensibly the loss he must sustain this
winter, and with genuine feeling, ex
pressed some very truthful aud amu
sing remarks. He said, many years
ago, gentlemen, the catterpillar did
his level best to eat up our cotton,
stalk and all. Now, gentlemen, we ve
got a worse catterpillar afoul of our
cotton now, than has been in this
country in some time. The common
caterpillar took it iu the patch, gen
tlemen, but the one of recent date,
waite till it is ginned and packed, then
he comes along and swamps all. You
all know him. The grating of fcis
terrible jaws drives terror to the hearts
of our families and makes them shud
der lest the monster has swallowed
their bread for another year.”
He closed amid the cheers of the .
crowd, giving his entiro sanction in
tho extirpation of this destructive ver
min. We are truly glad that the
spirit of action is being infused, and
hope that a sympathetic chord in the
heart of every farmer South may be
touched; like meetings bo held and
like measures adopted throughout the
Cotton Statos. We wish to see tho
old smoke-houses and corn-cribs, long
empty, burst their bonds, and plenty
once more in copious streams over
flow the land. Edward.
