Dawson has Been blessed with an able ministry the present year, and many additions have been made to both churches. - From reports, wo are led to believe ■ that neither of our preachers, tlie pres- I ent year, wore sustained financially, as they should have been, but oven they would be willing, no doubt, to make some excuses for their congregations ln that respect. Roddick,in Webster county, a little sou of Mr. Reddick (Horace) ■ about 12 years old, asked him tho little boy) if he knew him; the answer was no; tho negro thon drew a pistol and told him if he made any alarm he ( would kill him, and demanded his j money. Tho little fellow told him he had no money, wheroupou tho uegro I seized him, threw him on tho ground and gagged him. Ho thou took his , handkerchief and tied his hands under one log, gave him two or three kicks> threw him over the feuce, and left him. Horace crawled home, and not be- I ing able to open gates or climb fences, went to the horso lot. an 1, fortunately, fouud his father in tho crib, and after repeated efforts to call him succeeded l in making himself hoard. Mr Rjd tlick released his little sou, an l at once repaired to his dwelling, thinking the fiend that had committed the horrible deed was lurking near by waiting for j him to go in search of him. He is | still at large, but efforts are being made for his capture. Another Man Killed. —Mr S. W. as Smith, a shoe-maker, was killed ! last night at the bar-room of Garrard ‘ & Lewis, by Captain 0. A. Garard, ! one of the proprietors of the barroom. Capt. G. was arrested by the Sheriff, and wo suppose the case will undergo legal investigation to-day. Here is a boy’s composition on “The Horse:” “The Horse is the most use ful animal in the World. So is the Cow. I once had thirteen Ducks and two was drakes and the Skuuk filial I One. he smelted Orful. 1 know a Boy which had 7 chickens but His father would not let him rais Them 1 so he got mad and so he beared a j Hole in his mother Wash tub I wish ! 1 Hid a horse a horse weighs lUdO ; pounds.” The Largest Guns Yet. —The Now York Times says : Major Rodman, the distinguished ordanee officer, and the inventor of the Roimau gun, has Lmg entertained tho idea that thirty-inch guns could be made with almost the same facilty as twenty inch could, and he is now arranging for au appropriation to enable him to carry his plans into execution. If he succeeds, the patterns will be made immediately, and very soon thereafter the wonder ofthe world in the ibnn of ordnace, wdl be east As twoatyiuch guns cost about §30,- 000 each, doubtless thirtyiucli pieces will cost at least double that sum. A Naughty Cakpet-Baoqe.—A car pet-bag revenue officer in South Caro lina recently ran away from his wife, and the bereaved lady writes to the Louisville Chiol of police for informa tion. This is what she says of him: He came into Kintucky to go into polaticks ho wos one of John Brown’s men and was with him in Maryland he is a good stumpt speaker can edit a nusepaper deliver lectures an i toach school and is quite a friend to the colored people ho tryes to make him self no table ever he is he was a se'ser j ofeteual rovua w before hewent to Ken- j tucky —he has sandy mustash and ways about 115. A Gall an i Mayor,— ln Louisville, Kentucky, a few weeks ago, an ordi- : nance was passed by the councils to protect ladies from the gazes of street corners loafers. Alter deliberating j over the matter for a considerable j time, the Mayor has vetoed the ordi nance lor the following reason : If this ordinance were to be strict- j lv enforced, all our adult male popu- j lation would be liable to be sent to jail, and I am afraid not a few would have to be fined, while it is even possible that some of your honorable selves might be surprised to find yourselves victims to its sweepingjprohibitions. It is not even unlikely that the ladies are not displeased at being observed by the gentlemen, though I would not have your honorable body under stand mu as confidently asserting this of our lair friends. For my part, I think there is nothing on earth more pleasing than a handsome, well be haved woman, and the man that can not appreciato and be gratelnf for such ought to be fined, but to fine a man for footing with admiration on the ladies is something 1 cannot ap prove of. Prcitcbei*’ Wives. Clergyman are not general suppose to be amoug those who advertise tor wives iu newspapers. In this county, at least, instead ot their being embar rassed in finding partner s for life, tiicir embarrasinent generally is to choose among the many ladies who aspire to the responsibi.ities and duties oi a clergyman’s wile. In England, i however, it seems to be otherwise ; and a single copy of the Matrimony mal News, published in Ijonion, contains among its advertisements throe lrom clur r vman, which wc here subjoin: “A clergyman, agod 28,with a nice living, good residence, and well con nected wishes to marry, and would like to corresiwnd with a young la«ly i under 30 years of age, and having I some private property oi her own. “A clergyman, tall, dark handsome aued about 30, whose present income is £l4O, would like to correspond with a lovable lady, fron 20 to 3o years of atre, with some means in her own nge . lie would like to exchange cartes with A clergyman of the Established Church, aged twenty-six, toll and good-looking, but with only MOO per annum, wishes to marry, and would i lit to correspond with a young lad} ot good family, pleasing appoaranoo, and | some good moans. *1 iil ,i ».**, HhS’ltA -MKL O.V—Vtoried, *t he res- GlenC" ot IS., bride's heh-p, on trio *J4< H in«t.
