One Neoro Prisoner Murdered in
Jail—Seven Nkoeoes Have Their
Ears Cut Off.
We have received a letter from
Jefferson county, giving the particu
lars of uno of the most revolting out
rages which has ever disgraced the
annals of civilization:
It seems that on Saturday night
last a band of disguised men, who aro
supposed to have boon Ku-klux, vis
ited Jefferson county, and demanded
the key of the jail frum the jailer,
Judge Diehl. They wont to the jail,
opened it, took out nine prisoners, live
of whom had been previously tried
and convicted, and four of whom had
been committed on charges duly made.
The prisoners were carried a little dis-
tance from the village and whipped
severely by the band, aud the oars of
seven of them were cut off. They then
turned these seven loose, together with
one whose ears they neglected to cut.
The ninth was brought hack to the
jail, shot twelve times and killed.—
The one killed had been committed
for burning recently the gin house of
Alien Brown. The name of this ne
gro was Charles Butler, who former
ly belonged to Dr. Dixon. One of the
other negroes (Jim Stapleton) had
both of his ears taken off.
The people of the county —all the
true men—are justly indignant at this
diabolical conduct. They are deter
mined to ferrett out the offenders and
bring them to justice.
We take the above from the Augus
ta Chronicle. Such events, happen
whore thoy may, are deeply to be la
mented. They aro the natural fruits
of a revolution that has upset the very
foundations of society, and sought to
reorganize it upon principles both un
natural aud abhorrent. Such experi
ments have never in the history of the
World failed to bring disorder and
crime in their train. It is a serious
thing for government to drive men to
the wall and tempt them into a dis
play ol all the bad passions of their
nature. They never act with discre
tion under such circumstances, and in
variably take the law into their own
hands. There is no excuse lor such
occurrences as that stated above, but
iu most instances of the kind men do
not act from a criminal motitre, how
ever desperate the deed, but under a
misguided judgment as to what is
necessary for their own protection and
security The destruction of gin-houses
with the entire product of the year’s
labor, by incendiaries, has become
alarmingly common, and in many sec
tions it is impossible to raise animal
food for the support of the inhabi
tants, owing to the depradations of
idle and protligate negroes. The suf
ferers in this case, we learn, belonged
to those two classes of offenders, one
an incendiary, and the rest noted as
cattle and hog thieves and a pest to
the surrounding country. But,‘how
eve guilty, it was a great error aud
crime against the law to have pun
ished them thus. The law is every
man’s safety, aud when set aside, gov
ernment is at an end, and all society
placed in peril. It is idle to talk of
putting down such thiuga by the offi
cers of the law, or even by the milita
ry. There is but one remedy, and
that is inherent in the excessos them
selves. They work their own cure by
their influence upon public opiuiou,
and by finally producing rollection in
the minds of the misguided men who
perpetrate them.— Sen. Republican.

Let us now ’ook at some of those
thing's that will never Wear out.
1 have often heard a poor blind girl
sweetly sing, ‘‘Kind words will never
die.” Ah we believe that thase are
among the things that will never wear
out. And wo ar« told in God’s own
book to be kind one to another, ten
der hearted’ forgiving one another.
The word of the Lord will never
wear out. Though the grass wither,
and the flowers fall away, the word of
the Lord entureth forever. 1 l’etor

The life of the righteous will never
wear out. They will live in the world
to come as long as God shall live ; but
the death of the wicked will last for
ever.
The jovs of the kingdom of heaven
will never wear out. The pleasures
of this world soon die ; but the enjoy
ments of that world will never end.
The crown of glory will never wear out.
The crown of the winner in the
Olympic games soon faded ; the crowns
of kings all wear out; but the crown
of glory will never fade away 1 Pe

The ‘new song* will never wear out.
We hear something that some of our
tunes are worn threadbare; but that
will never bo said of the new song.
Which will you choose ? The lasting
or that which wastes away ? The thing
of time,or of eternity ? Will you choose
wealth, honor, fame or the joys of
heaven, eternal life, the crown ol glory,
and the ‘new song ?’
May God enable us to mako a wise
choice, and with Joshua, may we
choose to serve the Lord.— Christian

Says the American Builder: An old
man living not a thousand miles from
Washington, delights jn nothing so
much as tolling anecdotes of pionoer
life, to the people in the town where
they reside, and though his stories
are not always distinctly true, he tells
them with an air of truth that his
hearers find it haid to question his
racity..
On one occasion, when he had gath
ered a little audience about him on a
hotel stop, he was more than usually
spirited in his descriptions of hunting
scenes, probably for the benefit of a
stranger present, who manifested no
surprise whatever at anything he
hoard, though he listened attentively.
Our story-teller, whose name is
Brown, glanced at him several times
a little uneasily, but he could not
gather from the expression of his face
anything to epoouraga him to proceed.
Not willing, however, to give him qp
as a stupid fellow, ha made another
attempt, and related that he had at
one time killed six wolvos, with (
rifle shot, from the window of a i. j
cabin in the woods, and that he h& i
the six skulls at home t > prove it
“I remember the place,” said th#
stranger, now quite worked up
“Wasn’t it about a mile from where
Jack Felton’s farm is now Y”
“Yes,” said Brown.
“Exactly,” said the stranger, “and
I want to tell a curious thing that hap
pened to me in that very cabin. I was
out on a hunting expedition, and some*
how got separated from my company,
and I stopped there all night, for it
was so dark that I could not see the
way to go. I baried the door and
windows and felt quite safe, though I
could hoar the Wolves howl on the out
side.”
“I’ve heard them a thousand times,'’
said Brown quite interested.
“Well,” continued the stranger, *‘l
slept soundly until 3 o’clock in tho
morning, when I was awakened by
a dozen or more wolves coming down
the chimney, and, sir, do you believe
me, they pulled me to pieces and ate
me up in precisely two minutes —every
bone in me, nothing left but my boots.
“Do you moan to way that the wolves
ate you all up?” said Brown, “ato
you up ?”
“I do, and I have tho boots at home
to prove it.”
“Well,” said Brown, amid the shouts
of the audience, and with a curious
half sold expression on his face, “all
I have to say is that—that needs—
proof.”
Indiana Divorce. -Governor Baker,
of Indiana, in his recent message,
dwells at length and with great sever
ity upon the facility with which citi
zens of other States, after a pretended
residence in Indiana, obtain divorces,
and then return to their homes front
which they fled for that very purpose.
The laws upon which such schemes
can be carriedftut, he says, are a re
proach to the civilization of the age,
and are in violation of the comity of
sistor States. The Oovenor recomends
that the cause of the statue which au
thorizes divorces for any cause that
the court may deem sufficient should
be repealed, and that the clause mak
ing cruel treatment a good cause of
divorce should be so amended as to
require the treamont to be cruel and
inhuman, or cruel and barbarous.
He also recomends certain changes in
the practice in divorce cases which
would render impossible the collusive
oi fraudulent separationof husband and
wife, aud says that with such amend
ments Indiana divorce* would soon
cease to be advertised in the Atlantio
cities as marketable ccmmoddities.

One of tho best paying speculations
in the country is Henry Ward Beechers
church. The annual sale of pews for
the year 1871 has just taken place,
realizing the enormous amount of S7O,

year’s sales. No wonder the stock
holders can afford to pay their pastor
such an enormous salary when they
draw such dividends upon their re
ligion.
