Cm Lt> Drownsd —Our friend Mr. W. \V. Leo, of this oily, experienced a sa l misfortune in the lorn ol a bright cherub boy, some eighteen months of age, on Sat lrday, the eighth inst. It deems that a col-red nurse had the child, with another some cider, in her charge, near the tanya/d of Mr. Lee, when for some cause, the younger child was left alone in the vicinity of the vats. Before the nurse returned the child was discovered in one of the Vats, containing some five or six feet of water, where it is supposed to have been at least an hour before found.— The child was interred at Dover, on Sunday afternoon. Adam’s Fall from his first high estate involved his race in misery, and one of tho greatest sources of human suffering ia bodily disease. This being the ease, it ia all-important that, cvcry enlighten ed people should be supplied with those remedies which science bas discovered for the amelioration of tic ills of man. Hence we tako great pleasure io refer ring ewr readers to the huge advertise ment of Dr J. L. D. Perryman, who is now receiving one of the largest and beet (elected stocks of pure drugs and medicines ever brought to this part of the country. We hope the Doctor’s ef forts for the public good will be duly j appreciated. Harvested. —Tbe wheat has about all been harvested in thie vicinity.— There is usually but little grown in thie section, but we are told that the general yield is somewhat better thaß common. The season bas been quite favorable for oats, and those who have planted them have been richly rewarded for their labor. There is nothing produced io this country superior to oats for stock, and wo have often wondered wby more attention is not paid to them by our planters. Our citizens enjoyed quite a treat on Tuesday and Friday nights of last week, in attending the ctoiing exercises of the first term of Sir. J .F. Nelson’s school for boys and girls. On Thursday even ing we were entertained in a very agree able manner, for a sboft t : me, by tbe most excellent remarks of our talented young townsman, li. F. ‘Simmons, Ksq. —followed by declamation and the reading of compositions by the fl udeDts of tho school. Tiro rffurts of tho little boys and young gentlemen at oratory displayed the good training of the teacher aud rc fleeted credit upon loth; while the compositions of tbe young Indits were very good, without exception, aDd we must cangratulate them upon the vffi cicncy di-p!ayed in their do'ite y. \\ 0 do not mention names, for if al ldeserv ing were particularly noted, it would require mors space than iwe can spare. The exercises were closed by a few words of admonition and encourage ment to teacher*, pupls and audience, by Rev. T. T. Christian. On Friday night the Academy was filled to overflowing to witness the ex hibition < f appropriate charades, etc., and all will unite with us in an expres sion of satisfaction at the evening’s en tertainment. It was our pleasure to attend a part of tbe examination, and wc can only say that eve y student examined in our hearing, gave satisfactory evidence of the abilities of Air Nelson as an in structor. As will bo seen by advertisement, the seeood term of th : s school will begin in -bout two weeks. What rs Thought or Us. —During Court week our city was honored with a visit by Hnnri Hose, E q , :he veteran j editor of the old Jouruai. & Mlssen- Gtit. Mr. liose, we believe, started the second paper published in Georgia, and for many years has been batlleiop, !as he now is, for tbe right.
