But now and then cx pto ions have taken place, rnd many havo not used any kind of oil, fer fear of this danger. Found Dkad —On Sunday morning last, tho body of a mulatto man v\ as found by parties passing, about two and a half miles below the city, near the railroad track. He was apparent ly fifty or fifty-five years old, and en tirely unknown to any who saw tim. According to the verdict of tho Coro ner’s jury, there were no marks of vio lence* and he came to his death from r.n unknown caus« He had evident ly died the previous night, and from appearances, had been suddenly at tacked by some complaint from which he had struggled considerably before death relieved him ol his sutienngs. Stovens introduced the following hill: Ba it enact'd, by the Senate and House of Ropresentaiive? of the Uni ted States of Amend, in Cin<rr(s;a c « aerobled, That it is hereby declared to have been the true intent and meaning of tho Act of the 2d day of March, one thousand eight hundred sixty-seven, en titled “An Act to provide fi r the more efficientgovernmont of the rebel States, and ol the Act supplementary thcr to, passed on the 23 l day of March, 1867, that the government then existing in the rebel States of Virginia and North Car olina, South Carolina, Georgia, Missis sippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Florida, Texas and Arkansas, were illegal and void, and that thereafter said govern ments, if continued, were to be contin ued subjeot in all respects to the milita ry commanders of the respective dis tricts and the authority of Congress, Section 2. Sec. 5 That no District Command er shall be relieved from tho eonmiaud assigned to him under the aforesaid aot, unless the Senate shall have first advis ed and consented thereto, cr unless by sentence of oouit marshall ho shall be cashiered or diatnissed from tho army, or unless he shall oonseut to be so re lieved. Sec. 6. At the time for the comple tion ot the registration of persons prop erly qualified to vote, it may bo ex tended by orders of the said several District Commanders, to any day j.ri or to the first duy of October, Anno douiini 1807. Tlic “Republican Mate Con vcnlioit” For some weeks previous to tho “Fourth of July’’ last, the public, thiengh the colon ns of certain newspa pers ... Georgia, were notified that, a Re publican Mas# Meeting” would be held iu this city on that, day, for the purpose n f organizing a party on t hat occasion. The sources frum whence that call j emanated, were ansuraneas to us from , the outset, that if would be a meeting j reflecting no f.r ditupon those whocall ed, participated in, utid directed it, nor any upon our city, in which it wa. held. For numbers it was was indebted to the presence of the deluded freedmen -in this vicinity, and <L legations of them from a diotaDCe—they comp sing the masses attending it, but few white men bedng in attendance to wire-work tbo ‘PARTY* into existence as an idly, or component part of the Radical Republi can Party, North. 01 the very Jew white men present, '.here was not one for whom the claim of being a represen tative man in Georgia can be net tip. All distinction between the two racespn our State is prac ically ignored hy it. as our readers at a distance will see in its pub lished pro e ding o , and all has been in augurated by it, that could be, to pro mote that political strife between them which wc have all along feared, and which cannot but produce the roost dis astrous results, should the designing and reckless leaders of this new-flegged party succeed in thier ob jects. The word we use is not too forcible when we sav, that the meeting and the manner of directing it, were looked upon with loathing by nineteen twenite hs, at least of the white r siden'S of the city, and if they meet the apDroval of any,, save those who, in their 'madness,’ had a ‘method’ by which to engender that strife between tho races to which wc havo referred, we have no knowledge es them. It was emphatically a miss neeting es f eedmen, directed by white men, a few‘native and to the manner born,’ the others, frum whence we know nt t nor do we care. Five negroes have been appointed on the Mobile Felice. Colored majority in Richmond, Ya. 113; Chesterfield oouuty 500 ; lltnrico county 300. The “G institutionalist” reports the total number of registered voters in that county, 2,414, Whites 938, colored, 1,476. Tho Atlanta Era says phat "General! Pope comprehends tbo intentions of Congress.” If so, he is the only man ! living who does in or out of Congress • It is said that Hon R 'bt. Toombs has been pardoned by the Presid. nt. Chicago is getting hotter There were only three suicides fur murders and two rapes committed ia that city one day last week. Dan Rice, the show man who ran for Congress, and was beaten, is now man aging another meoagrie iu Ohio. Dr. Joseph Stevens, of Hancock county-, Maine, paid a tax on a golifl watch the other day, remarking that he paid a tax on the same watch during the war 1812. The people of Central City, Colorado have subscribed 85,000 to bo paid for Indian scalps ‘with cars on,’ at tho rate of twenty-five dollars apiece. An attempt was recently made by 200 armed men to proclaim Rome, the Eternal City, a Republic; The move ment failed , and 40 of the liberty lover; are in prison. R’publicamism is un popular in that latitude. Among tho names of the newly en franchised registered in Norfolk, were the following distinguished personages: George Washington, Ilenry Clay, J .bn Randolph, Daniel Webster and Pat rick Henry. The Lynchburg News says that Bishop Early has registered and thus set an example of wisdom and d'scrc in this matter, as in many others, which it would be well for all who can to fol ow. Gor. Pchf field has decided that the election of the successor to Judge Lyons in Richmond shall be made by the peo ple. Time not yet fixed. The Surratt trial "drags its slow length aloug ” Eich witness so far ap pears to stultify himself, by testifying to OHe thing on the examination in chief and denying it on the cross examination. The evidence so far 38 published, begins to disclose a deeply laid scheme, out of which Secretary Stanton cannot come ni b ik-an bunds. The Southern Cultiva'cr says that over one thousand bushels of wheat were harvested from lots and gardens within the corporate limits of Athens the past month, all of excellent quality. The Home Journal says: "The New York ladies have adopted the EY fashion of washing in wine, wlrehij s i.4 to have a peculiarly softening ( {Tact up ,on the skin. Oae young lady mes two or three bottles of "greeu seal’ every morning while performing her ablu tions.” It is intimated, says an exchange, that the editor of the Lawrence (Kan sas) Tribune, who counted ten thousand million grasshoppers on site sandy ridge in one hour, has been engaged to c ,uut how much Ben. Sutler made out of the war. It is supposed ho will be eugaged about a month. Poor Caßlotta —lt is stated that the last words uttered by Maximilian, when facing hts butchers, were, “Poor Curlotta !”—thus showing that his lust thoughts were with the stricken one at Miramar. Important.—General Pope has is sued instructions to the Savaunnb Biard of Registration, that all persons who have been pardoned by the Presi dent are allowed to register; but it is evident that the “Rump” will overrule the President’s instructions. Fleas and Mosquitoes. — A corres poudoat of the Scientific American says that, “oil or essence ol pennyroyal is believed to be a tpecific against the at tack of flias. I have always usel it whet) floas were in my bed cr about my clothing, and found that it would banish them entirely, and am now using it with canal success to banish mosquitoes. They will not come where it is. ’ Horace Greely says the man who pays more for shop rant than far ad»cr ti ing don’t know his ba-jnr«t. Dr. K'lii t*, the minister, was delivering a discourse with the view of obtaining aid for the South, and while dwelling upon the principle of‘peace and good will,’ a dove 11 tw »u at tbo window, perched for a moment upon the gallery balustrade, tlieu circled sbnv* tbo minister, and fi nally seated itself upou the pulpit. Defamation. —John Baily, a veteran soldier in tho United States army, was lu s t weejc turned out of u situation in the Quartermaster’s Dopartmer t at Nashville, because lie had said : “This government has been in the hands of better men than it is at present” "George Washington and General Jackson were better men than Abe Lincoln, and they approved of iristitu - tions of which Abo Lincoln did not.” This was called “defamation of Con gress and President Lincn’n.” A Washington dispatch says the Con gressional Committeo has received telegrathic response.; to its cir cular ot Thursday, of over thirty mem bers of Congress, every one of whom tfliy they will b® on hand for tho sum pier se-sion of Congr ss.
