We have not yet seen icc frQ2cn this winter to the thickness of one fourth inch- This was seen odc morniug but only by early risers. The past two weeks have been more like May or June than January. Up to Tuesday night the sky was almost per fectly clear, and the atmosphere quite “summerish.” Heavy Importation.—One of the most attractive sights witnessed by us while in Macon a few days ago, was ♦hemammoth stock of Cutlery, Lroctt- Kjry, Silver-Plated, China, Glass and •Wooden-ware receiving by our friend K. MARKETS. JOURNAL OFFICE, ) Dawson, Jan. 9th, 18G8. j The late advance in cotton had the affoct of bringing a large amount into town—everybody anxious to sell— targe quantities were sold at ten cents, and some extra cotton at a fraction above that figure. On Tuesday the excitement abated, buyers not willing to give over 9} ard holders unwilling to sell. We quote as ruling figures to day, 9a9i. Macon, Jan. 7.—Fair demand at 101. New York IGJaIGJ. A similar explo sion recently occurred in a mail car on the New Jersey Central road, which re sulted in the burning of tins car and pearly all its contents. An Albany newspaper states that the colored people of that city have recent ly formed a society, one of the promi nent objects of which is tho delivery of literary, historical and scientific lectures, by poippetent gentlemen during the winter. I found no less than forty-five Radi cal politicians at the stepsofthe War Office, aod the sum and sub-tauce of their conversation was, Where does Grant stand? Can we run him for President? Finally, someone came out, and was eagerly hailed by the outsiders, who walked away with him. 1 heard them say, We must find out orthe party, is goue to thunder. 1 walked boldly up to the private of fice of the great mystery, and banded in my card The General took it with great re spect, and urdtred the atteudaut to show me in. But which ? 1 persisted ; for they both claim you. It is one thing to enter your claim, he coolly replied, ana another to get your Grant, I thought so. Don’t you think, General, there is a great reaction going on ? Ike g tup and locked the door, aod uni eked his private b x, asked me what 1 would take. I replied—An an-wer. Why, Ally, said he, I don’t stand on polities at all If a man is respectable, I don’t mind bis politics. Would you accept a nomination for the Presidency ? I thought I had him now; but, he simply blew a cloud of smoke, and look-1 edat, it musingly, replied: Kentucky would have made a fplen- ! did race against time, the other day, if he hadn’t baited the track. After this he rose, and seemed tired of the conversation. I took the hint, but was determined to find out something before I went; so as I arose from my chair, I enquired— General, is there any truth in . the newspaper reports about your political wiews ? Ally, said be, I have talked to you with more freedom, upon political sub jects, than I have ever allowed myself to do even with Washburn I know the high character of the journal which you represent, and I have felt it my duty to unbosom myself fully to you.
