Terrell Superior Court,
The regular spring term of Terrell
Superior Court began on last Monday
at 10 o’clock, sharp. His Honor,
Judge W. D. Kiddoo, occupied the
bench and convened the Court, when
Sheriff Christie implored the divine
benediction in the usual formula upon
‘hhe State and the Honorable Ccurt.”
The lists of the grand and petit ju
rors were called by J. M. Simmons,
Esq., acting deputy clerk, and nearly
all responded promptly as their names
were pronounced. The juries were
then regularly empanelled and were
sworn in and qualified by J. G. Parks,
Esq., acting Solicitor General pro (cm,
after which the Court proceeded to
charge the Grand Jury upon their
duties, privileges ami responsibilities.
Judge Kiddoo delivered a very elab
orate and exhaustive charge to this
body, and his auditors were impress
ed with the fact that the Court did
its whole duty on this line. His re
marks in reference to the most thor
ough and scrutinizing investigation
of the conduct of public officers were
most apposite; and truly did he state
that “Eternal vigilance is the price
of liberty.”
The call of the civil docket was
begun at the conclusion of the
Judge’s charge to the grand jury, and
the legal fraternity came into requisi I
tion. A number of cases have been
continued and settled, and a goodly
portion of them have been disposed
of finally. An interesting case of
“Marshall vs. Gay” was tried on last
Tuesday in which our friends, J. 11.
Gucrry and J. G. Parks were antag
onists, and each made capital efforts
in behalf of their respective clients.
The jury considered the case nearly
half a day and decided that each did
so well they couldn’t tell which was
entitled to a verdict, and a mistrial
was had.
The docke: of civil cases will en
gage the attention of the Court dur
ing all of this week, and (he Crimi
nal Docket will be taken up next
Monday morning the first thing.
Witnesses in criminal cases and
parties out on bail would save trouble
and costs by being promptly on hand
Monday next at 10, a. m.
As is usual a delegation of visiting
attorneys is in attendance upon our
court. We remember seeing Ool’s
Hood, Fielder, Douglass, the Hon. J.
T. Clark and Sol. Gen Flewellen, of
Cuthbert; Col. C. B. Wooten, from
Albany; Col. S. D. Irvin, of Milner.
Tho court will probably adjourn
to-day week.
Bo Careful with Kerosene.
We publish to-day a distressing ac
count of the death of a little girl in
Dougherty county from the impra
and ">nt handling of kerosene.
Another accident, still more horri
ble, happened, about tho same time,
in Merriwether county, by which a
mother and two children wore burned
to death. The latter accident hap
pened from pouring oil into a lamp
from a can without extinguishing
the wick. There is a gas that arises
from kerosene oil that is liable to ex
plode when brought in contact with
flame. A can of kerosene should
never bo opened, or ever allowed to
remain in a room where there is fire
in any form. Many careless people
arc in the habit ot pouring tho oil
on wood in the fire place or stove to
make it ignite readily. Such people
will be blown up and killed sooneror
later but they will loose no brains.
Dr. Tlios. P. Janes.
This gentleman, who has been
Commissioner of Agriculture for the
state ever since that department was
established, spent a portion of Satur
day and Sunday last in our town vis
iting relatives.
The Doctor seems, so far as we
can learn, to have run his department
tojhe entire satisfaction ol those most
intcres'ed in it, the farmers of the
state. We hear of many petitions
going up to the Governor for his re
appointment from individuals, agri
rieultural socitties and grand juries.
Our own agricultural society wa3
the first to move in the matter.
The Doctor is working hard to'
forward the agricultural interest of
the state, and has already accom
plished much good. His “Hand j
Book of Georgia,” his “Manual on j
the Hog," on the Sheep, “Manuel” and
his crop reports arc works of much
labor aud vnlue. He is now enga
ged in investigating the different
breeds of cattle in order to find out
those best suited to our soil and cli- 1
mate, and will give his views on the
subject in due time. His method of
having commercial fertilizers inspec
ted, since that matter has been placed
in hi3 hands, has saved the state
about $25,000 a year.
The Doctor's term expires in Au
gust, but we hope the Governor will
find it to the interest of the state to
con Unite him in office.
j buttings.
Messrs. Editors : In these days of
dull limes aud scarcity cf uews, it may not
be altogether uninteresting to tho roaders of
the Journal to have, ever and anon, a few
| dots from every day ooservation though
they may be quito common place.
I Fur this reason, therefore, we offer you a
lew dottings, and hop 9 yen, nor any of >our
readers, by your metaphysical disquisitions,
will so closely scrutinize our manner as to
cause uncharitable criticism on the same,
but take them us a mere olio from every day
! life.
During the past week business and duty
j has called us to visit different portions of
our county, und for my own satislaction and
information, I have noticed closely the
workings and progress of tho farming in
terests. In the more southern portion ot
the county crops of every kind are looking
unusually fine. Wheat has already been
cut, and though somewhat injured by rust,
yet the yield will be large, measuring up
from 10 to 20 bushels per acre. The corn
ciop was never m*re promising in this sec
tion, and if tho rain continues thee will be
a bountiful crop made the present year. —
uats are eupeib, and though corn is now
rather scatce, yet most of the farmers are
now able to “bid farewell to every fear“ so
far as stock-feed is concerned. Tho warm
wea'her has brought oat the cotton plant,
and the whole crop from the southern to
the northern pnrtiou of ihe countv is quite
encouraging. We were favorably struck
with the fact, that all the crops, as a general
thing, throughout the county, are in fine
condition, notwithstanding a larger grain
crop to harvest then usual. In the notthern
portion of the county the corn and cotton
crops are not so forward, but a good stand
and in fine condition, fo short, we think
the farmers may well congratulate them
selves on the fine prospect of a bountiful
harvest in due time About D wson the
wheat is generally threshed up and the yield
excellent, ranging from 15 to 40 bushels per
acre, and even iu some instances as high as
50 bushels per acre. With these facta be
fore ns, mav we not be hooeful, as a brighter
day seems to be dawning upon our section
of country ?
After a week of observation, scenery, etc ,
different from our regular monotonous rou
tine, circumstances nre such that we are
found on Sabbath, 2f,h instant, in the cit.v
of Dawson aDd being the guest ot a Meth
odist famil7, we are earlv found wending our

We are not at all astonished at its having
the reputation of being the finest Sabba'h
