We saw one fellow devour a quar

O. O. Nelson Female Institute.
The exercises of this deservedly
popular school for young ladies will
he resumed on the Ist Monday in
September next. Miss Eliza Janes,and
her assistant Miss Kittie Orr, will do
all in their power to give perfect sat
isfaction to their patrons. Reasona
ble charges for tuition. As the Fall
term is short, it is earnestly hoped
that patrons will send in promptly on
the first day.
It’s a Boy.
Our excellent and talented young
townsman, .Tames G. Parks, Esq.,
came up town last Tuesday morning
with an unusually bright smile upon
his handsome face. He had a kind
word for every one, and when we
approached he gave our little hand a
tight squeeze and whispered, “old
fellow, its a line boy and weighs nine
and a half pounds.” Jim now spends
the larger portion of his time at
home.
Cotton Gin and Mill.
Mr. W. M. Peeples notifies the
public in this paper that he is now
prepared to gin cotton and grind
corn on short notice. His gin and
mill is in excellent condition. lie
employs none but first class labor:
and is personally responsible for ail
work intrusted to him. Read his
card and patronize him.
Temperance. —At the meeting of
the Ga. Christian Temperance Union,
held at the Masonic- Hall last Tues
day afternoon, twenty-one names
were added to the list of membership.
This Society is rapidly growing in
favor, over ninety of our citizens
having already signed the pledge.—
Everybody is invited to attend the
next meeting, which will be held at
the Masonic Hall next Monday night.
The Entertainment.’
Extensive preparations are being
made by the Dramatic corps for their
entertainment which comes off on the
3rd of September. The young ladies
and gentlemen are now rehearsing,
and we learn that the entertainment
will be decidedly the best our citizens
have witnessed in a long while. As
the proceeds will he donated to our
Fi ,- e Company, we hope to see a
large crowd present on that night.
Fine Cans. —-Mr. J. J. Bradley
sent us two stalks of sugar cane last
Tuesday, with 18 fully matured j mats
The weather, so far, has been very ;
good. Syrup will probably he cheap
next fall.
E. E. Cheatham.
We ask the especial attention of
our readers, especially our cotton men, j
to the card of Mr. E. E. Cheatham
who is now itt business with Mr. H.
Fraser Grant at Savannah, Ga. Mr.
Cheatham is well known here as a
prompt, reliable and accurate busi
ness man. Our business men all know
him, and know that he is a young;
man that deserves .encouragement,
and we hope they will make it a
point to throw all the business in his
hands that they can.
The Barbecue.
The attendance at the barbecue at
the Court-house on last Tuesday,
though large, was not quite so large
as we expected to see. The citizens
of the town turned out generally,
and there was a large delegation from
the country, though the urgency of
cotton gathering, doubtless, kept
many at home. The supply of pro
visions was ample for the crowd in
attendance, and was well prepared.
Those in charge of the affair deserve
credit for the way m which it was
managed.
* The crowd spent the day in a very
pleasant manner on the grounds ami
all seemed to enjoy themselves and
the occasion.
Fine Corn.
Uncle Billy Sessions, a worthy old
colored man of this county,—one
who lives at home and boards at the
same place,—came into town early
Tuesday morning with a couple of
ears of corn which be took from his
12 acre patch. Says lie, “Boss, I
want you to put it on the Dawson
Jemal.” Here goes; it was decided
ly the best specimen of corn we have
yet seen. The ears measured 12|
inches and were full of very large
whiic grains. Uncle Billy used no
guano, but Worked his land t horough
ly. Such colored peop’e ought to tfe
encouraged by their white friends.
Personal.— We had a call, on
Monday las* from our former towns
man, Col. Jas. T. Goode, who Is now
editor and business manager of the
Eufaula Aries and Times. Col. Goode
is a man of fine education and a
good writer. We welcome him to
the fraternity and congratulate tbe
proprietors of that paper on securing
his services.
Mr. W. F. Combs, f the for
mer editors of this paper, has again
taken editorial charge of the South
ern Tamer, at Athens, Ga. The pro
prietor and former editor ol that pa
per, Dr. H. H. Carlton, has retired
from journalism.
—
To the Citizens of Dawson and
Vcnty.
After visiting several places in dif
ferent portions of the United States
for business, I have decided to locate
permanently in Dawson, and have
formed a co-partnership with my
father, Dr. C. A. Cheatham, in the
drug business and practice of medi
cine. I can be found at the drug
store during the day—at the resi
dence of father, at night. Soliciting
a share of patronage. T am,
\ ery Respectfully,

Overtasking the Energies.
I is not advisable for any of us to over
task our energies, corporeal or mental, but
in the eager piiisuit of wealth or fame o
knowledge, how many transgress this a lutary
rule. It must be a matter of great impor
tance to all who do so to know how thov
can regain the vigor so recklessly expended.
The rented v is neither costly or difficult to
obtain. Ilostettei’s Stomach Bitters is pro
curable in every city, town and settlement
in America, and it compensates for a drain
of bodily or mental energy more effectually
than anv invigorant ever prescribed or ad
vertised. Laboring men, athletes, students,
journalists, lawyers, clergymen, physicians,
all bear testimony to it wondrouslv renovat
ing powers. It increases the capabilities for
undergoing fatigue, and counteracts the in
jurious effects upon the system of exposure,
Sedentary habits, unhealthy or wearying avo
cations, or an insalubrious climate , and is a
prime alterative, diuretic and blood depur

All Undeniable Truth.
You deserve to suffer, and if v u lead a
miserable, unsatisfactory life in this beaut
fu! world, it is entirely your own fault and
there is only one excuse tor you,—youi unr
teas onahle predjuuice and skepticism, which
has killed thousands. Personal knowledge
and common sense reasoning will soon show
you that (ireen’s August Flower will cure
you of Liver Camplaint, or Dyspepsia, with
ail its miserable effects, such a3 sick head
ache, palpitation ol the heart, sour stomach,
habitual costiveness, dizziness ct the head,
nervous prostration, low spirits, &e. Its

Good Digestion.
“Give us this day our daily bread”
and good medicine to digest it, is both
reverent aurt human. Tho human
stomach and liver are fruitful sources
of life’s comforts; or, disordered usd
diseased, they tingle misery along
every uerve and through evety artery.
The man or woman with good digestion
seec beauty as they walk, and overcome
obstacles they meet in the rotate of
life, where the dyspeptic sees only
gloom and stumbles and growls at
every imaginary object. The world
still needs two or three new kinds ol
medicine before death can be perfect
ly abolished ; but that many lives have
been prolonged, "lid many sufferers
from Liver disease, Dispepsia and
Headazhe, have been curod Mkkhf.lls
Hepatink, is no longer a doubt. It
cures Headache in twenty minutes,
and there is no question but what it is
the most wonderful discovery yet made
in medical science. Those afflicted
with Biliousness aud Liver Complaint
shettid use Mebkf.u/s IJepatine.
It can be had at Da. J. R Janes.
