Dawson.journal. . THE ALBANY SUICIDE. Mr.Frederiek Lehman Takes an Over : dose of* Morphine. From the Albany papers we get the full particulars of the suicide of Mr. Lehman, mention of which was made in last Thursday’s Jour- NAL. “Mr. Lehman had been drink ing heavily for some time, and his ‘ brain had become affected. For several days he had been talking 1 of self-destruction, but as he often l talked that way when undar thel influence of whiskey, very little was thought of it. Friday hight | he went to Welch & Agar’s drug store and asked for fifteen grains | of morphine “for 'f:xmily pur poses.” Mr. Lunday, the prescripe tion clerk, who measured the drug, suspeeted nothing wrong until, as Mr. Lehman, after paying for it, walked out with his purchase mut tering to himself. DMr. Lunday immediately went to Mrs. Lehman and told her of the transaction, advising her to have her husband watched. Accordingly; one of the soms, Frank, was constantly with his father until all danger was thought to be past. Knowing that he was watched, Mr. L2liman ghowed the usual cunning of a madman; he pretended to have lost the morphine, accusing some member of the household of hav ing stolen it while he slept. He gave a hoarder in the house 50 cents to buy him another dose, and upon being refused,he threat ened to drown himself, gaying, “vom can’t take the river from me.” Satarday be continned drinking, and went to bed Saturday night in a drunken stupor. His son stayed by him until he slept soundly, and then being satisfied that he was safe until morning, went to bed himself. Sunday moraing his wife looked in on him several times, but as he nppeared to be sleeping soundly she would not disturb him. About 8 o’clock they went to call him to break fast, and found him under the in fluence of morphine. Some one of the house remembered having heard him get up about three o'clock, and it is supposed that he took the drug then. Dr. Strother was immediately called in, and though he knew it to be a a hopeless case, he used every means that science and skill could suggest to resuscitate the dying man. But it wasall to no pur. pose, and about 9 o’clock all was over. . His mind had been giving away for some time, and his family had almost decided to send him to an asylum. Saturday he was so vio lent that his wife was advised to have him restrained in the guard house, but she retused to do so, prefering to keep watch over him, as they had often done in similar attacks, until his reason returned He seemed to constantly brood over the recentmurder and sui cide in Cuathbert, frequently argu ing that Mr. Russell had a per fect right to take his own life, but not that of his children.” That af fair, acting upoir 2 mind already diseased, no doubt prompted the terrible act. Seven or eight years ago, under precisely similar- cir cumstances, he attempted to take his own life, but after having tak en themorphine he became frigh:t encd and went to Dr. Young, a physician,"who lived here at that time, begging him to use some means to stop the action of the poison. It was done, and since then his family have had*no ap prehension of Lis ever again at tempting a like act, though he of ten threatened to do so. Satur day he made every preparation for death, dividing his tools among his boys, writing a letter to almost every member of his family, in cluding a sister in Illinois; even partially-preparing his body for burial. His family knew all of this, but Lie Lad acted in the same way many times before, and they were confident in the belief that he would have neither the mcans of opportunity for seclf-destruc tjon. ; Mr. Lehman was born in Zofin gBn canton, Argovie, Switzerland, in 1822. He came to Ameriea when a mere boy, and in 1852, having marrie 1 a Southern lady, Miss Roe, of Cutlibert, he scttled in Southwest Georgia, aud for nearly aquarter of a. century Lo has bep}.flp_,,_‘,giht‘xien of Albany. Hiz ehillren, with two excep ticrs, were present at his death. The olrlést;m! whose home is in Brunswick, and Lis youngest !daughter,in attendance at Andrew Coliege, Cuthbert, were telagraph 'ed for, and ecame at once, so that the entire family were present at his burial. The deceased wrote a number of letters to different parties be fore taking the fatal potion, and among them was the following: “ALBANY, GA., May 22nd, 1885. —News and Advertiser: Touch me lightly, if you please. If you can say nothing good for me, let my faults pass by. ‘A few more throes, and death will bring the balm that soothes all earthly woes.’ ' . F. I was treated by a number of doctors, 21l to no effect. I used several patent medicines, which did me no good, and about three years ago I was seized with a severe nervous trouble, and was obliged to quit farming, I thought my days would soon be over, but last winter I received one of your pam phlets called the “ Ills of Life.” I at once tried your, PerunA and MANALIN,® They helped me right away. I used nine | bottlesof PERUNA and three of MANALIN; and now I am quite well, and able to resume farming. I also had a little child which was attacked with a severe cramp in the stomach; we thought it would go into spasms. I used nothing but PeruNa, We gave it an injection of PErRuNA and warm water, and gave it a teaspoonful of ' the medicine internally every half hour. i It was relieved in one hour, and has not been bothered since. I have also used it with as good effect in case of croup and colds. I know that it 13 a wonderful medicine, and recommend it to all who are in poor health.
