~ Dawson Journal. E. L. RAINEY, Ebiron. W. N. THORNTON, _ : . Pror'rs. - @& B. STEVENS, : I'mURsDAY,SEPTEWEER 10TH,1885. Dr.J. P. HoLMEs, the well known dentist of Macon, died a few days since. j Tae legislature has abou‘t:ll agreed to adjourn the 20th inst Let as give thanks. ! IN the last weck both the S:\.? vannah News and Americus Re corder have published trade issue reflecting much credit on them and their cities. A PROPOSITION is before the leg latare to make a small appropria tion to enable Georgia to be rep resented at the American Exposi tion s7oon to be opened in London. Mgs. Mary Story, daughter of Captain Calvin May,of near Cuth bert, suicided ou the 4th iest. by cutting her ithroat with a knife. Bad health is the only reason as signed for the rash act. IT is proposed that cremation be done in gas retorts, and it is estimated that the average human body will yield some 200 feet of illominating gas. Is not this mak . ing light of a grave subject? > ~ Lower Georgia has the cater. pillar in fall force. The estimate of the injury for Lowndes county is,one third off for the short sta ple and one half for the Sea Is land. The Times thinks with this loss the crop will still be as full as it was last year. - THE Enterprise is of the opinion ‘shat Randolph county will make 'two handred bales more cotton than last year, while the corn crop isnotso good. Emigrate to Terrell, neighbor, where we make more of both corn and cotton. ‘TrE Americus Daily Republi ean is a visitor to our sanctum, and when we say that it is a ered it to that city, with its wealth, in telligence and prosperity, compli ment is exhausted. It is one of the finest specimens of an inland daily wo know of. Pror. Dieuis, the alleged biga mist, who the people of Dawson remember and who recently mar ried Miss Stokes, of Smithville, has been brought from Alabama and is now in jail at Americus en joying his meditations over his onerous marrying business. VaLposTy, spurred on by the plucky Times,is trying to build a . 810,000 institute. Two thousand, six hundred and fifty six dollars have already been subscribed. T'wo hundred dollars is the largest sub. gcription yet announced. The #Times promises to stop exhorting, “Be not weary in well doin 2, my brother. M=z.A.J. Haznp, formerly of our county, but more recently a eitizen of Alabama, will begin the publication of a newspaper at i3l laville, Schley county,-on the 15t inst. We extend ilie right haud of fellowship to Brother Harp in advance, and hope that his jour nalistic carcer will be both profi able and pleasant. Wz are under obligaticns to Mur. J. H. Salmon,a former towns. man, for an issue of the Tropical “Pardise, giving an exhaustive ex position of the city of Orlando, Fla., and its business men. J udg ing from the contents of the pa por, Jack is in one of the largest and thriftiest places in that State —a place that it destined to be come a large city. . ExcHaxGES speak the senti ment of , our heart when they go for the general government (i e Cleveland) for appointing “mug wumps” to the most lucrative po sitions withia the gift of the ad ministration. If there is one po litical wiggle in all the whole cess pool of polities that is nioro des picable than another it is a “mug wump.” A Mean Old General Routed. Old “General Debility” has been put to flight in Arkansas, with happy results. From Brink le{y, from Webb City, and from Waluat Ridge, Messrs. . R. An derson, E. hi. Taylor and F. S Pinchbeck respoctively, write that thedve were all afilicted with genor al'debility, and received solid ben. efit from Brown’s Iron Bitters, ithm is pleasant to know, not onl Arkamsas people, but for ufi sections of the country where General Debility hus counted vie. tims by the thousand. For sale everywhere, E THE NEW HOTEL. enceforth to be Known as the Rob inson House-—A Delightful Winter Resort. Our people have all been great ly interested for the past several weeks in the crection of the new botel. It bas appealed to the pride of the ecommunity and is looked npon as a gauge of Daw sou’s present prosperiiy, a proph esy of its future progress. This important enterprise was taken in | hand by that public spirited gen tleman, Mr. O. G. Rooinson, and has been managed with admira ble business sagacity. He placed the planning and building of the house in the hands of Mr. B. H. Brown, well-known throughout our community for his taste in architecture, thoroughness in workmanship and expedition in the eompletion ot jobs committed to him. The wood work has been already completed; the plasters, painters and finishing hands are rapidly turning off their parts of the job, and the keys will be turn ed over and the house opened by the Ist of October. The house is one of which Dawson may well be proud and presents an inviting as pect to the weary traveller. It has two elegant colounades, one on the firstfloor, the other above. They are 210 feet in length, making most attractive promenades, and fur nishing ample means for exercise. The lower one will prove no doubt agreeable to commereialists and other gentlemen for lounging and enjoying the pleasures of the open air, while the upper colonade will be especially suited to ladies for exercise and refreshment, whilg at the same time it will be quite re tired. If the outside of the house ’is inviting the inside will prove ‘wore attractive. On the first floor will be found a large office in the southwest corner of the building opening on the colonade. This room, with the lower halls and stairway, is finished in a most handsome manner with wainscot ing of the best yellow pine ceiling three inches wide. It is certainly ‘a beautiful piece of work and is the delight of all who have visited the building. Just back of the office is a nobby baggage room, well adapted to the demandsof the ’ traveller, and those who have vis- Jited the Kimball House say there is nothing there superior to it. The dining room is large, well ar ranged, well sentilated, excellent ly finished. Nothing better can be found in this part of the State. Just opposite the office on the first floor is an elegant sitting room in tended for gentleman and will prove especially pleasant to them. In addition to the rooms on the first floor already mentioned is a sample room for commercial sales men, well adapted to this impor tant class of customers. Up stairs is a large, well-finished parlor for the ladies, which will be most ele gantly furnished and made attrac tive to the fair sex. Opposite the parlor is the bridal chamber, a very iruportant addition to every well regulated hotel. There are 31 bed rooms in all. Many of them are arranged with doors so as to open into each other and con stitute a suit of rooms suitable to the requirements of families or companies of friends. In addi tion to the features of the house already detailed there will be two rooms for large and heavy trunks, and a well arranged laundry to meet the demands of the travel ling public. The top of the house is ornamented with a cupa lo, arranged as a band stand, from which our already excellent band can dispense sweet music. This house which is so well planned and arrangel to satisfy all the tastes of the varied public for comfort and luxury is to be presided over by that old drum mer, so well and favorably known to the travelling public, Mr. T.M. Allen. He is respected by all who know him, well informed as to the demands of the travelling public, popularin manners and efficient in business. Mr. Allen will not only be suceessful in the management of the hotel, but with his family will make a valuable addition to our community in Its sociul life. When the advantages of which Dawson is now possessed are con sidered, wo feel no hesitancy & recommending it to all who m %% be in search of place to spend the winter months, Having good al titnde, with. an almost perfect drainage and good waler abun dant, onrs is surpassed by few as a city in healthfulness, Those ese caping from thé snow storms and ’zerd winds of the North and Northwest will find here an enjoy able place. The winds from the ice fields of the North are tem pered up and the hot breezes of the extreme South are tempered down before they reach us; henece, the pleasantness of our climate. Here we occupy the mean be tween the extremes of heat and cold. Pawson is aceessible {o all points on the seaboard and the in terior towns of the State, and lo cated on a grand trunk railroad,in a productive territory, is a desira ble location for new enterprises that are springing into existence. As a business mart she stands in the first rank. The business buildings are first-class and seec ond to those of no town in the State. Our merchants are intelli ligent, active and energetic, while the professions are ably maintain ed by those engaged therein. Qur educatiomal facilities are as good as the best, and our churches, be ing in charge of able ministers, aided by good Christian men and women, render our religious ad vantages superb. In conclusion, we wish to cor dially invite all Northerners who contemplate spending the winter in our beautiful Southland to con sider our unexcelled advantages and to come among us, spend the winter, help us skin' potatoes and be happy. The Railroad Commission Bill. We publish elsewhere this week the railroad commissicn bill which has been agreed upon and report ed favorably by the joint commit tee of the Greneral Assembly, and we invite a careful perusal of its provisions by our readers. The necessity for a modifica tion of the powers of the commis sion has already been discussed in these columns, and while we might offer some amendments to the bill, had we the power. We see no reason why the Dbill as reported, should not be adopted by the legislature. It cannot be expected that a matter of so much importance can be perfected without trial and ex perience, and should experience, after trial, teach us that the present proposed modification did not meet the demands of the times or re. lieve the difficulties complained of, then another amendment can be adopted and another trial had. We are between Scylla and Cha rybdis on this perplexing ques tion, and while we are evading the rocks of the one we should be careful to avoid the whirlpools of the other. Justice ought to he done to the railroads, and this can only be done by an amendment to the commission law. At the same time we ought to be careful to guard the rights of the people from unjust diseriminations in freight and passenger tariffs by the railroads. He who solves this question will be a benefactor to the State. No safe rule can be adopted except that which is based on experi ence. We can only gain experi ence by trial. Therefore, we favor the adop tion of the proposed amendments that the futare, aided by our ex perience, may produce a system that will be just and'equitable and give satisfaction to all interested. Tadre is nothing like It. It Cures Where all Others Fail. Not a cure-all, but an excellent tonie, appetizer and blood purifier, and in the treatment of FEMALE TROUBLES, absolutely without an equal. Of this popular preparation, the Tele graph and Messenger, of Macon, says: *‘Most of our druggists handle the prep aration called O. I. C., which simply means Old Indian Cure, and many of them are selling large quantities of it. This medi cine has a strong hold upon the confidence of our people, who regard it as an honest, reliable old remedy. It is manufactured by a company in Perry, Ga., who own the original Indian recipe. The rapidity with which the demand for it has increased, sinee its introduction in our community, is simply wonderiul, and can be truthfully accounted for upon but one ground, and that is the real merit of the article, for its advertising here has been limited, ascom pared with many other preparations that have been left far in the rear in the race for popular favor.” SOLD BY LEADING DRUGGISTS.
