Iris shocking to the girls of this age that Bartholdi made his goddess of liberty without zorset, “baug or bustle. RoOBINSON'S circus wes in Alba ny Monday and red lemonade, led liquor and artesian water were badly mixed by night. WEehope our sabseribers will remember that wo are no bald-pa ted philanthropist. Waltz up and demand a receipt. It is to be hoped that the prison reform congriss,in session in At anta, will bring the Georgia peni sentiary gang to repentance. PrESIDENT CLEVELAND daclined the degres of LL. D. from Hr vard Cellege. He did not desire an empty hohor. Sensible Cleve fand. ALBANY is the biggest market in Georgia for the size of it. With ‘& railroad ranning to that place Dawson coald improve herself in that respect. SomE of our exchanges say that the late elections wera very en couraging to the democrats,. We - fail to see where the comfort has ite ledging place. WHILE our Northern friends are having snow we arehaving @ool, clear, crisp, invigorating weather. The South can down the North on weather any day. “THE Brunswick band seems to bave captured Atlanta.” Mayhe 80; but if we were going into the eapturing business in Atlunta we'd take along a well-filled flask. Tue Albama legislature has elected a woman engrossing clerk, whereupon an exchange remarks that she will likely engross a geod deal of the time of the mem bers. e e Pias, billy-goats and otlier ani mals can continue to commit nui sances in the neighboring town of LCuthbert. The stock law was de fealed there by a good wmajority last week. ate BirxxGuAM girls have caught on tothe right thing. When they hear that a young man has said anything naughty of them they arm themselves with cowhides #and go out and give him a sound thrashing. e EvERY now and then our Alba ny neighbor gives an exceedingly loud hoop for Its cotton market. It ean’t get around the fact that the Ppool is causing a falling off of the oottou receipts in that town. Dawson is now humping herself. Up to this time the Legislature has done vut little exce t elect Judges and Solicitors, and attend to theinaugural caremonies. Quite a number of bills and resolu tions were introduced under the call of counties. Tue Columbus Euquirer re marks: “Grover Cleveland, Presi dent by the grace of God, aad the eweat and blood of his democratic brethien, misused his high office to the detrinient of his constitu ents and the damnationof his par ty.” It was a humiliating spectacle last week to see the publication in mewspapers of certificates of char acter of men who were applicants for Georgia Judgeships, A man who aspires to this high and hon orable position should need no eertificate of character. IT seems that “Mr. Smith, rep resentive from Pierce,” was some what befuddled last week. Heo published different cards in the Constitution in which he prowm ised to support every candidate for the Judgeship of the Brans wick cirenit. The greatest gues tion for the legislature to solve now 18, who did “Mr. Smith” vote for. ge v THERE seems to be music in the air already among the solons .dn Atlenta. The Coustitution charges Hon. D. B. Harrell, Judge J. L. Fair and ex-Senator Raokin with moral turpitude in the Marietta and North Georgia Bond affair. Tuvestigating ecom w have been appointed by “the legislatare and things prowmise to take a lively turn before ad journment, The Dawson and albany Railroad. Messrs. B. H. Hood, N. W. Do zier and S. R. Christie, of Daw son, and Messrs. Nelson Tift and S. R. Weston, of Albany, incorpo rators of the Dawson and Albany railroad, held a meeting in the latter city last Friday to talk over the proposed road. The proceed ings of the msating were kept se cret, but we lears that every one present seemed to ba in earnest, and that it was noiversally agread that the road shoald ba built. An interview with one of the dele gates developed the fact that thy ouatlook for Dawson to have an»ther railrond oatlet is now brighter than ever before Tho delegats in question is de cidedly of tho opinion that some thing will soon be accomplished to Dawson’s interest. The fol lowing, concerning the meating of the incorporators, is from the Al ny News: “The maeting, from what the News and Advertiser could learn, was morely advisory and nothing dofinite was done, except that the incorpora tors present decided not to organ ize under their charter for the present. A representative of the News and Adrertiser interviewod Col. Hoed, of the Dawson dalegation, upon the subject of the proposed road, last night, and was told Dby him that the business men of Dawson were determined to have another railroad eonnection. Whether it will be direet with Albany or not he was not prepared o say, bat the importance of an other outlet had been fully exper iencad by Dawson this season, and her business men are now in a condition to form an alliatice with anybody that will rua a railroad to or thoagh their town.” Iy regard to the coming press excarsiou to Cuba, the Carters ville Couragt remarks: “Tho Georgian Press Associa tion meets at Valdosta noxt May and a trip to Cuba is to ba had. When the time domes for handing out the tickets for this delightful excursion we expect to see the the fourth estate imposed upon by fellows that don’t know a shoot ing stick from a double-leaded ed- Jdtorial. - Wou't President Lstill draw the line somewhers as to ‘who are really entitled to courte ‘sies intended for newspaper men, and them only?” Mgs. A. T, Srawart will rest almost as swestly in her coll mar ble sareophagus as tha lowliast plantation aanty who fulis asleap in her Savior, lulled by the soothing tanes she has heard in har prayer gnd eamp mootings sinea she erawled as a pickanninny around the old eabm floor. That was about the only consolation tha mil lionairess conld carry with her across the long bridga with but tresses laid in the eternal shad- Ows. . Tae Savannah, Florida & Wes tern railway does not give any more fres passes fo members of tho Georgia legislature. The S. F. & W. has set a good examople to all the other roads in the state The abolition of the dead head passes to member of tho legisla ture wounld adjourn that illustrious ‘body twomonths earlier. We en dorze the S. I'. & W.—Bainbridge Democrat. WE notice that the report of Legislative proceedings inelula Anvitations of visitors to “‘seats on ‘the floors.” This is a nuisance peculiar, wo balieve, to Georgia, aad one which ought to be abated, but which will not be so long as ‘publication is mads of tha*honor” extended to the “distinguished” visitors. Tue News and Advertiser says that Albany has a chioro form inebriante —a man who drinks and inhales «this poisonous drug. Itis stated that he prefors the effects of ehloroform to that of whiskey, He enters upon a regular debauch, in which he acts as if drunk with alcoholic stimu laghe... . e Mirnwavzere's reformers are car rying things to an extrema. Un der the szda: blae laws of that place they propose to prosecats singers in charch choirs who re cieve compensation. And they yank a newsboy to the calaboose without ceremony for selling s moraing paper. Tie republican gains in Con. gressmen in the late elections is attributed to Cleveland’s mug wugpian policy by western demo crats, They say that Cleveland snabs tha “old gaards,” and gives the young demoeruey no hope of rewurd. A Hamiliating Confession. The suggestion of the Cuthbert Liberal and the JourxiL that Mr. Turner suceeed one of the present incambents in the next United States Senate calls forth the fol lowing from the Macon Nowe. The remarks of the News are to. true, and the existence of such & state of things should cause every Georgian's cheek to burn with shame and indignation: “The Cathbert and Dawron pa pers want Turner for the next United States Senator. The sug gestion is good, but how are yon going to get him there? Atlunta bosses that kind of jobs, and she hasn't yet resigned or been torn ed off for violating any of the eivil service regulations., If Atlanta says Turrer, Turner will be the man; and 1f Atlanta don’t say Turner, Dawson and Cuthbert will be in a minority like that of a golitary colt when surrouunded by a platoon of horse flies. Gen tlemen you can talk, and that's all yoa ean do. Atlanta rules the roost, and it isn’t worth while to get mal about it, for not many cities in the State would be too modest to exercise the same power if it wera possible. Let': tuke things easier and be good natured and sabmit to the inevit able without letting any unneces sary waves of trouble come slosli ing across our breasts. We've all got to look to a higher power —higher up the country. Dawson proposes, but Atlanta disposes, and it will be so ’'till Geoigin wakes from her slamber or . change comes o'er the spirit of her dreanms.” To this the Cuthbert Liberal adds: “What a humiliating confes. sion! And yet it must be made. How long will the freemen of Gieorgia submit to the dominatior of a knot of politicians located ir Atlanta? Soch confessions as tha vhove are a disgrace to our manhood. Will the people con tinue to be bossad by these trick sters? By specious pleading the demagogus makes it ap peear to the peopla that their choice is his choice, when the reverse is true. Until the people determine to oppose the man of Atlanta’s choice, whoever he may be, Atlanta will “boss the job.” Tue Atlauta correspondent cof the Macon Telegraph reports to last Sunday’s issue of that paper an interview with a popular At lanta pcliceman on the subject of the drinking of aleohol in the: city.
