THE JOURNAL. E. L. RAINEY, - Nditor. AX “automatic gate” is the lat est invention. Unless it will resr vp at precisely midnight and kick a lover out into the gutter and kick the girl into the house it does not fully meet the demand, and the inventor may as well try again.—Danville Brecze. Miss SarviE CuxNINGHAM, a Kentucky belle, rich in her own right, Lad her wedding day post poned twice during las week after the people had gathered at the church to see the knot tied. On the first occasion Mr. James G. Givers was to have been the hap py or unfortunate man, and on the last Mr. John Jabine, the former a young barrister and tle latter a young business man. Miss Canningham now says she does vot believe she wants to INAITy any one. HE had been courting her for gix months without coming to the point, when she turned on him one evening with: “Charles, Isn't it awlul for a girl like me to worry ovar how I shall invest $75,000?” ‘He thcught it was, and three months later they were marrieq. “I'll invest that $75,000 for you, my dear,” he cbserved a day op two after marriage. “Oh, I was afraid some one might love me for my morey, and I gava it to papa,” was the artless reply. We elip the following from an exchange and commend the senti ment as worthy of consideration by any community, embodying as it does much trath ia a little space: “Let our people continually pull together. Everybody ecan do someting. Those who can’t pull oan scotch and give a sat'sfied grunt. Earnest, continuous work, accompanied by encouraging words, and a help'ng hand when ever necded, whether to build up fortuues or to attain cf a higher and batter life, wi!l surely be re. warded.” A Toroxrto shoplifter was ro ceutly captured in Montreal, and she panned out remarkably well. In a pocket three feet long was an assortment of spocns, thread, lace aud other valuables. Her bustle was formed of two bed sheets, a lady’s beautiful hat and & colored glass jng. Her trunks contained bed clothes, all kinds of wearing apparel, brushes, combs, over 1,500 rolls of thread, a large bag of ueedlea,'pius, ete., about fifty pounds of soay, matches, fancy cards, glassware, table g»ods, feathers, bottles and jars of preserves. A PRESS dispatch from Boston, dated 4th, says: A heavily load ed passenger train on the Boston sul Providenca railroad met with a terrible accident at seven o’clock this morning, between Roslin dale and Forestville. Five cars fell throngh a bridge. Thirty three persons were killed. The bridge is comparatively a new one and the accident was causad by a truck of one of the cars giving away, causinz a car to strike againstan abutment of the bridge. The smoking car, after it fell. eanght fire, but the fire depart ment was promptly on hand and prevented anv spread of the flames. A fearful rumor comes from North Georgia. It is said that the member of the (General As. sembly for that enuniy has twen ty-five bills which he will intro dneo at the sammer session. Is tl}ere no way to prevent this ses sion? Tie Cleveland (Ohio) Press, of February 23d, 1883, pub lished an account of a fatal surgical operation which caused a great commotion among med ical men throughout the whole country, Dr. Thayer, the most eminent surgeon in Cleveland, pronouncing it scandalous, It appears that a Mrs, King had been suffering for many years from some disease of the stom ach, which had resisted the treatment of all the physicians in attendance, The disease commenced with a sligcht de rangement of the digestion, wita a poor appetite, followed by a peculiar indeseribable dis tress in the stomach, a feeling that has been deseribed as a faint “all gone” sensation, a sticky slime collecting about the teeth, causing a disagree able taste. This sensation was not removed by food, but, on the contrary, it was increased. After a while the hands and feet became cold and sticky— a cold perspiration. There was a constant tired and lan guid feeling. Then followed a dreadful nervousness, with gloomy forebodings. ~ Finally the patient was unable to re tain any food whkatever, and there was constant pain in the abdomen. All prescribed rem edies failing to give relief, a consultztion was held, when it was decided that the patient had a cancer in the stomach, and in order tosave the patient’s life an operation was justifi able. Accordingly, on the 22d of February, 1883, the opera tion was performed by Dr. Vance in the presence of Dr. Tuckerman, Dr. Perrier, Dr. Arms, Dr. Gorden, Dr. Capner, and Dr. Halliwell of the Police Board, The operation consist ed in laying open the cavity of the abdomen and exposing the stomach and bowels. When this had been done an examin ation of the organs was made, but to the hoiror and dismay of the doctors there was no cancer to be found, The pa tient did not have a cancer. When too late the medical men discovered that they had made a terrible mistake; but they sewed the parts together and dressed the wound that they had made, but the poor woman' sank from exhaustion and died in a few hours, How sad it must be for the husband of this peor woman to know that his wife died from the effects of a surgical operation that ought never to have been performed. If this woman had taken the proper remedy for Dyspepsia | and Nervous Prestration (for this was what the disease really | was), she would have been liv ing to-day. Siaxer ExTrACT OF | Roows, or Seicer’s Currarve | Syrve, a remedy made ex pressly for Dyspepsia or Indi gestion, hasrestored many such | cases to perfect health after all other kinds of treatment have failled. The evidenee of its efficacy in curing this class of cases i 3 too voluminous to le published here; but those who read the published evidence in favor of this dyspeptic remedy do not question its convineing nature, and the article has an extensive sale, How to Gain lesh and Strength Use after each meal §IOTT'S EfALiSigN with Hypophosphites, 1t is as palatable as milk, and easily digested.
