Social Security
News
Q. I am 86 years old and for
the last 10 years my son has
been supporting me. I have
never worked and my late
husband died before social
security started. My son died
last month, and I now have no
income. Is it possible for me to
get some benefit from the
social security contribution my
son made?
A. Probably so, you should
file a social security claim as a
dependent parent. Parents of
deceased workers may be
eligible for monthly benefit
checks if the worker
contributed at least one-half of
the parent’s support during the
12 months ending with the
worker’s death.
Q. I filed a claim for
disability benefits recently and
my claim was approved. I
became unable to work in May
1969, but my first check was
for the month of December
1969. Why did I not get paid
back to May when I became
disabled?
A. The law provides a
six-month waiting period, so
payments are not made for the

Methodist To Vote On
Merger At Savannah
Dr. Zach Henderson of
Statesboro has announced that
the South Georgia Annual
Conference of the United
Methodist Church will vote a
second time on a racial merger
plan that body defeated last
June.
Dr. Henderson, who is
chairman of the South Georgia
section of a state Committee
on Merger, said the identical
plan defeated last 'me in
sessions at Valdosta would be
presented when the South
Georgia Annual Conference
meets June 1-5 at Savannah.
Debate on the measure is
scheduled for Tuesday
afternoon, June 2.
The announcement was the
result of nine months of
deliberations in closed door
sessions of both the Joint
six months. Payments to a
disabled worker and his family,
or to a disabled widow or
widower cannot begin until the
seventh full month of
disability. In your case the
waiting period began with
June, ended with November,
and the first payment was for
December.
Q. I received benefits as a
student until June 1969 and
then went to work. I earned
$3,000 in 1969. Must I file an
annual report of my earnings?
A. Yes. If you received any
social security benefits in the
year and earned over $1,680.,
you must file a report with the
Social Security Administration.
This report asks for the months
you did not earn over $l4O.
You are due benefits for these
months. This report must be
filed by April 15.
Social security information
and assistance may be obtained
from the representative who
visits Ludowici on the 3rd
Thursday of each month. You
may contact the representative
at the Courthouse from 9:30
a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Committee on Merger and the
South Georgia section.
Dr. Henderson said that the
joint committee, in a session
some two months ago,
concluded that it could not
improve on provisions of the
original merger plan. That
document provides for merger
of the black Georgia
Conference, consisting of
30,000 members, with the
white North and South Georgia
Conferences. The white
conferences have membership
totaling just over 361,000.
The plan provides for a fixed
ratio of black membership on
conference boards and
agencies, improved salaries and
pensions for blacks, and
additional leadership roles for
black ministers.
Last June the plan was
defeated by the South Georgia
Annual Conference.
