Gets Early
County Post
Joe E. Collins, Liberty
District Soil Conservationist,
U. S. Department of
Agriculture was promoted to
District Conservationist in
Early County, Blakely,
effective June 1.
Mr. Collins has served in the
Liberty County unit since
1947.
A native of Tattnall County,
he attended the Collins, Ga.
public schools, was graduated
from Brewton Parker Junior
college and the University of
Georgia.
During the summer months
at the University, Mr. Collins
participated in the old land
measurement program in the
state.
After graduation from the
university, he began work with
the Wrightsville Farmers Home
Administration.
He taught vocational
agriculture in Lyons until he
was called into service in 1943.
He served 33 months in the
South Pacific with the
amphibian engineers and while
serving there married the
former Miss Ruth Bullock of
Brisbane, Australia.
After his tour of duty with
the U. S. Army, Mr. Collins
served in the Soil Conservation
Service for two years before
being transferred to Hinesville
to head the Liberty-Bryan
county unit. In 1955 his district
was changed from Liberty-
Long, and he has headed that u
nit since then.
Mr. Collins pointed out that a
reorganization of the Soil
Conservation is in effect. He
said, “I hate to leave Liberty
County because we have many
friends here. We have done a
lot of work and there is still a
lot of work we want to
’complete.”
Mr. and Mrs. Collins have
three children, John who is
serving in the U. S. Air Force,
Adrian, a student at Middle
Georgia College, and Mark who
completes the ninth grade here
this year.
Mr. Collins and his family
have been active in civic, and
church activities since their
residence here. He has served
as a member of the Liberty
County Board of Education
since 1964. The following

Marlin Browns
Moving To
Ludowici
Mr. and Mrs. Marlin Brown
Jr. and daughter Melissa who
have been residing in Savannah
for several years, have
purchased the Hugh Howard
dwelling on Residence Street in
Ludowici and will move here in
the near future. Mr. Brown will
continue his work with Union
Bag Corporation.
Mrs. George W. Zorn has
returned from a visit with her
daughter Mrs. Ed Flowers, Mr.
Flowers and children in
Baxley.

Commencement Exercises at
the Georgia Institute of
Technology were held on
Saturday, June 13, in the Fox
Theatre. Approximately 1600
undergraduate and graduate
degrees in the fields of
engineering, science,
architecture, and management
were conferred by President
Arthur G. Hansen.
The commencement address
was delivered by Dr. Myron
Tribus, Assistant Secretary of
Commerce for Science and
Technology, Washington, D.C.
Graduating from Ludowici is
Wm. Addison Evans, Civil
Engineering.
Revival Set At St.
Luke Baptist
On June 22-26
The St. Luke Missionary
Baptist Church, Highway 196,
Hinesville, Georgia will hold its
Annual Revival Meeting, June
22nd through June 26th.
Prayer Service begins at 7:30
p.m. and Preaching service
begins at 8:30 p.m.
The Visiting Evangelist of the
week will be the Reverend
Thomas Joseph Lynch, B.T.H.
of Claxton, Georgia, Pastor of
St. James Missionary Baptist
Church of Ludowici for 30
years, having served in
Glennville for 48 years, in
Macon for several years and
Moderator of the T.M.B.A. for
40 years.
The Reverend B.T. Smith is
Pastor of The St. Luke
Missionary Baptist Church here
where the revival is to be held.
Havener Reunion
Held June 7th
The Havener Reunion was
held in Barnwell, S. C. on June
7. Relatives from Ludowici
attending were W. H Parker,
Sr.; W. H. Parker Jr. . ’ Dan
Parker.
Misses Vicki and Marianne
Parker are visiting Mr. and Mrs.
Bill Guthrie and children in
Jacksonville.
Ludowici Editors Leave
On World Tour Recently
Mrs. Helen Williams Coxon,
editor, and Mrs. Mary Williams
Owen, managing editor of the
Ludowici News, left this week
for a tour around the world, all
of which is by air.
They went by plane from
Atlanta to New York on
Monday and left New York
Monday night for Brussels,
Belgium. From there they went
to Edinburgh, Scotland and
next to London, England.
Their next stop was in Zurich
and Lake Lucerne Switzerland.
From there they will go to
Munich, Germany and to
Oberammagau in Germany
where they will see the Passion
Play on June 22. Held only
once every ten years, this is the
36th production of the Christ
Story in the 360 years.
From Germany they will go
to Rome, Italy and on to
points in Greece, including
Athens and Corinth. The next
stop will be Cairo, Egypt, as
well as Memphis and Luxor in
Egypt. From Africa they go to
the Island of Cyprus, a neutral
country from which a flight
can be made to Israel, where
they will spend five days in the
Holy Land.
From the Holy Land they
will fly to India, including New
Delhi and Agra. The next stop
is Bangkok in Thailand. From
Thailand they will go to Hong
Kong China and the Red
Chinese Border.
Two days will be spent in
Osaka, Japan and the World’s
Fair, Expo ’7O. Five days will
be spent in Tokyo and other
parts of Japan. The tour group
will attend the Baptist World
Alliance in Tokyo. The
members of the party who are

Mr. and Mrs. H. Merle
Gordon of Deland, Fla., Mrs.
John B. Parham, Miss Felicia
Parham and Julius Wright of
Roswell, Ga., visited their aunt,
Mrs. Charles Phillips during the
weekend.
Mr. Gordon has been in
Savannah on account of the
critical illness and death of his
sister, Mrs. Christine Poston
Davis of Savannah.
Mrs. Gordon has been in
Roswell for the wedding of her
granddaughter, Miss Cheryl
Wright to James Lamar
Christopher which took place
on June 12 at the First
Presbyterian Church in
Roswell. The bride’s sister,
Miss Maxine Wright was the
maid of honor and her cousin,
Felicia Parham was the
bridesmaid. Little Jenny Ray
Yokum of Atlanta gave the
bags of rice. The bride is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.A.
Wright, Jr., of Roswell, Mrs.
Wright being the former
Shirley Gordon, who is well
known in Ludowici, where
they have often visited Mrs.
Phillips.

For Honor In Fitzgerald

Bible School
Has Many
Attending
One of the largest parades on
Friday boosting enrollment in
Vacation Bible School of the
First Baptist Church and
Harrison Chapel brought out
105 young people on
preparation day.
The school opened Monday
and will continue through
Friday, (tomorrow).
The enrollment on Monday
was 125. On Tuesday the
enrollment increased to 131,
and probably higher by Friday.
Donny Neal Brannen, son of
Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Brannen,
was named “Jaycee of the
Year” in Fitzgerald last week.
Donny was also installed on
Tuesday night as President of
the Fitzgerald Jaycees where
he has been living for the past
2 years and teacher of
Industrial Arts in the schools
there.
Before going to Fitzgerald
Donny graduated from the
Ludowici High School in 1964,
and attended Georgia Southern
College in Statesboro where he
graduated in 1968.
The Jaycee installation
ceremonies were conducted
before wives and guests at the
Fitzgerald Elks Lodge.

Spend-The-Day
Party Sunday
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Parker had
as guests on Sunday June 14
several of their friends for a
dinner party. Those present
were: Mr. and Mrs. Herbert
Ridgeway and daughter Sheila
and son John from Winder,
Georgia; Mr. and Mrs. Neal
Smith and children of
Savannah; Mr. and Mrs. Grady-
Dickey and daughter Donna of
Savannah; Mr. and Mrs. Marlin
Brown and daughter Lissa of
Savannah.

Leland Branch Honored
By Altamaha Lodge 227
It was Leland Branch’s night.
It was the occasion Friday
night of Altamaha Lodge, No.
227, paying him it’s highest
honor with the presentation of
a fifty year pin, an apron
inscribed with the* legend “50
Years” and a certificate
signifying his long membership
in the Lodge, which came from
the Masons of Georgia.
It was actually fifty two
years, back in Nov. 23, 1917,
the Lodge’s now senior
member, joined at the age of
21.
Making the triple
presentations was John A.
Kaufman of Brunswick,
representing the Grand Lodge
of Georgia as third grand
steward.
Mrs. Branch shared the honor
with her husband as she pinned
the handsome pin on his coat.
Present with the Branches were
their daughter, Mrs. Betty
Blitch and her son, Jim Blitch,
all of Neptune Beach, Florida.
The Branches had lived in
Ludowici fifty years before
they moved to Florida.
The banquet and program
honoring Dr. Branch, a retired
druggist, was held in the
cafeteria of the Ludowici High
School. Clyde Gordon is
worshipful master of the
Lodge.
Bradwell Smith, secretary of
the Lodge, presided and served
as toastmaster. Dr. Branch
graciously responded to the
honor shown him.
In discussing the honor
accorded the veteran Mason,
Kaufman said there were
97,000 Masons in Georgia, and

in the two hundred year
history in the state only 3, 017
fifty year pins had been
awarded.
Dr. Branch, who is a 32nd
degree Scottish Rite Mason,
was born at Walthourville on
June 1,1889.
His parents were the late
Alexander Stevens Branch and
Laura Elizabeth Branch, the
former having operated a
general merchandise store here
for many years.
Long Countiuns
Are Named To
Dean’s List
Three Georgia Southern
College students who are
residents of the Long County
area have been named to the
1970 Spring Quarter Dean’s
List.
To be eligible for the Dean’s
List a student must have at
least a 3.3 grade p’oint average
for the quarter.
The following students have
made the Dean’s List:
Lawrence Mitchell Barrett, a
junior had a 3.66 grade point
average. He is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Lawrence M. Barrett,
of Ludowici, Ga.
Sharon Earline Gordon, a
junior Home Economics major
had a 3.33 grade point average.
She is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Earl D. Gordon, of
Ludowici > Ga.
Sandra Gayle Moore, a junior
had a 3.66 grade point average.
She is the grand-daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. S.T. Morris, of
Ludowici, Ga.
