A mouth ago it was thought that the
reduction of the national debt for De
cember would not be more than $8,000
n00, but. ihe treasury departments re.,
port that it was more than $ 15.000,000.
The reductions during the first six
months of the p’•eseut fiscal t ear exceeds
$81,O00,00o, while the reduction dur
ing the whole of the fiscal year which
ended with June 30, 1882, was $151,-
000,000. The total debt is now $1,-
920.461,693,81. At the rale of last
year’s reduction the debt would be ex
tinguished in about 12 years. It is
not expected that the payment will con.
tinue to be as rapid as it has been, but
it is not improbable that the burden
which reached its maximum in August,
I860, when the National debt was
$2,844,019,626, will be obliteiated
seventeen years hence, when the year
1900 is ushered in on us. The crop
failures and panics may retard the pay
ment, and changes in the tariff may re
duce the income of the government
from the $410 000,000 est mated as
the receip s of the present fiscal year
hut economy may effect a correspond
ing reduction in the $395 000,000 ex
penditures of die government, estimated
as the cost of the n itional establish
ment for the year ending with June 30,
1883, so that the end of the public
debt may precede the eud of the cen
tury.

MILK IN THE COCOANUT.
Just before the last Congressional
election, it was reported in Atlanta
that a large number of Special Deputy
U. S. Maishals were to be appointed
to assist at the pol s in the election of
A. E. Buck for Congress. These Mar
shals, however, were not appointed,
and the public has never known the
reason why. 1 Ewe was no money ap
propriated by (Tongress, or furnished
by tho Department of .Justice, to pay
them, in the first place, and, therefore.

Her story is that he was given to her
by his parents, who-had died of yellow
fever in Nashville. Tennessee. For a
ong while she had heated him bad y,

two hundred “citizpns,” who wero to
immolate themselves by serving as
Special Deputy U. S. Marshals on the

however, was frustrated by United
States Marshal, Gen. James Longstreet, ?

selected as his Special Deputy Mar

summoned, and late last night a verdict
was rendered to the effect that the child
had died of illtreatment and starva

awaits in the county jail the action of
the grand jury. The colored people a e
quite indignant over the affair.
A letter was received by Governor
Stephens on last Sunday from a resi
dent of Cave Spring, in which it is com-
p uined that tho inmates of the Deaf
and Dunn Asylum located at that
point, are being starved out by the
managers of that institution. Tho cor
respondent alleges that the unfortunate
class of people who find a lo Igment
there are fed upon half rations the year
round, the a'iment provi 'ed being
scarcely sufficient to sustain life. r rhe
