Big Fusionist Victory In New
York.
VIRGINIA IS DEMOCRATIC
In 3Iaryland the General Assembly
May Be Democratic on Joint Ballot,
Which Wouid Insure Gorman's Elec-
tion to United States Senate.
New York, Nov. 6.—The reports re
ceived during the early morniug hours
from the outlying precincts of Greater
New York and some of the belated re
turns from Manhattan island add rather
indicating'his vote ior justice of the su
preme court are late and it is difficult
to even attempt to estimate the dual
figures, but it is believed he will run
nearly 80,000 behind some of his asso
ciates on the county and judicial ticket.
In addition to the election of an entire
new assembly, two state senators were
voted for at the recent election. The
senators were elected to fill vacancies
caused by death in the Thirtieth and
Forty-third senatorial districts. In the
Thirtieth district William D. Barnes
(Rep.) was elected, while in the Forty-
third district Morton E. Lewis, one of
the Republican leaders in the last as
sembly, won. The election of Messrs.
Barnes and Lewis leaves the senate un
changed. There will be 35 Republicans
and 15 Democrats in the senate of J902,
which is the same number each party
had in the senate of 1901. The assem
bly of 1902 will probably stand as fol
lows:
Republicans and fnsionists. 108; Dem
ocrats, 43.
Tnis is in all probability a Republican
and fusionist gain of three, leaving the
Democrats in a minority of 62.
Seth Low, as mayor of Greater New
York, will have a salary of $15,000. He

disposition is that of a private secretary
at a salary of $5,000. He may appoint
commissioners and heads of depart
ments to succeed the present incum
bents in most of the executive depart
ments of the city government.
Virginia Safely Democratic.
Richmond, Nov. 6 —Latest returns
do not alter materially the election
{^figures sent out last night. The most
conservative estimates place the Demo
cratic majority in the state ticket at
about 25,000. The indications are that
the Republicans have elected one sena
tor and 14 members of the house. This
is a gain of 11 in the present general
assembly, hut that body will be over
whelmingly Democratic in both blanch
es.
Held Up by Three Men and Forced to
Marry Woman.
Waycross, Ga.. Nov. 2.—An unusu
ally interesting story oomes from Charl
ton county, where court has been in ses
sion.
H. Reed Morrison, a prominent citi
zen of Moniac, wa3 granted a divorce in
the court, there being no opposition to
his suit. Morrison stated to the jury
that he lived in South Carolina prior to
his removal to this state, three years
ago, when he came to Moniac and ac
cepted a position as sawyer for the
Dyal-Upchurch Lumber company.
He said that one night while he lived
in South Carolina he was met by a trio
of men, heavily armed with Winches
ter rifles. He was told that he must
either marry a certain young lady of
the community or prepare to pass in his
checks. The woman in question was a
sister of one of the men in the party.
He was held in custody at the point of
the dangerous looking rifles until the
lady, the license and an officer of the
law could be secured, and thereupon
they were made man and wife.
According to Morrison’s version of
the affair, as soou as the ceremony had
been performed he was sec at libercy
and as soon as possible left the state of
South Carolina and had not returned
there since. Never having from that
day until the present time looked upon
the face of the woman whom he mar
ried that night in the road after hearing
his story, and there being no opposition
to the proceedings, the jury granted the
divorce asked for.

Columbus, Ga., Nov. 5.—The coro
ner’s jury failed to solve the mystery of
the death of R. A. Oweu, who was
found Sunday morning pushed under a
negro house ou Seventh street in a
dying condition from wounds about the'
head, and who died at the hospital sev
eral hours afterward.
The discovery of the mortally wound
ed man was made by a stream of blood
which trickled its way out upon the
sidewalk. Owen was pushed as far np
under the house as he could be placed,
being fairly wedged in between the sills
and the ground, and great difficulty
was had in getting him out. His death
is an absolute mystery. j
Eeicre he died he mumbled something j
about a car striking him, but there is no
record of any street car accident of auy
sort. His friends are certain that there
was foui piay, as the ground leading to
the house was torn up, as if he was be
ing dragged against his will, and several
of the palings were toru from the fence,
indicating a struggle. His skull was
crushed and there was a deep gash be
hind his right ear. He had $10 on his
person when he met his death. There
is nothing to connect auy one with the
deed so far.
TRAGEDY IN COTTON PATCH.
Jordon Jackson Charged With Murder
Near Dawson, (ia.
Dawson, Ga., Nov. 4.—Jim House, a
negro, was killed 2 miles south of
Graves, this county, in a cotton patch
with a breechloading shotgun. Jordon
Jackson, also a negro, was the only
eyewitness to the snooting. He says
House shot himself accidentally, but
disclosures before a coroner’s jury led
to a verdict charging Jackson with be
ing guilty of the crime.
Dr. J. *H. Lewis testified that the na
ture of the wound made it aimost im
possible, under the circumstances, for
the dead negro to have inflicted the
wound himself, accidentally or other
wise. The gnu used was 10 or 12 feet
from the body when other persons
reached the scene, but was aftewards
moved to within 4 feet of the body,
seemingly to give more color to the ac
cident theory.

Paris, Nov. 5.—Admiral Gaillard’s
squadron arrived off the Island of Syria
(Grecian archipelago) yesterday ana de
tached a dispatch boat, whioh entered
the port of Syria and received from the
telegraph station a batch of dispatches
containing definite instructions from
the French government regarding car
rying out the sealed orders which were
handed to the admiral previous to his
leaving Touion.
These dispatches directed Admiral
Gaillard to proceed to the Island of
Mitylene, whence he will seize the cus
toms at Midilli, and at another port.
The squadron is now on its way to
Mitylene and will probably arrive at its
destination today. The foreign office
has not yet received the sultan’s reply
to the note presented by M. Baptiste,
counsellor of the French legation at
CoustautiuoDie, following out the in
structions of M. Deicasse, the foreign
minister, under date of Nov. 3. The
correspondent here of the Associated
Press is enabled to make the following
statement:
“When the French government de
cided to send a French squadron to Tur
key, it debated whether to seize the
customs at Salonica. Beirut or Smyrna,
as it was surmised that the receipts of
one of these big uorcs would be required
to produce a sufficient sum to pay off
the French claims without a long occu
pation, whicti was considered inadvisa
ble. The occupation of Salonica was at
once dismissed, because it might create
the false impression that France' was
aiming to reopen the Macedonian ques
tion.
Choice Fell on Smyrna.
“The occupation of Beirut was also
set aside, owing to the French position
and interests in Syria, where the popu
lation looks upon France as its protec-,
tor. The occupation of Beirut, there
fore, was certain to create effervescence
and, perhaps, even rebellion. The choice
of M. Deicasse, consequently, fell on
Smyrna, which offers equal advantages
to the other ports, without having their
political drawbacks. Saturday, howev
er, came the dispatch from M. Batiste
announcing the issuing of the sultan’s
irado announcing the Lorando claim
settled in its entirety as France de
manded. This dispatch slightly modi
fied the aspect of the situation, as H.
Deicasse came to the conclusion than
tne suitan womu now .... —
claims and would within a few days
produce the guarantees which France
demanded for their payment.
“The necessity for seizing big cus
toms, therefore, became less pressing,
although the necessity for occupation of
Turkish territory in order to exercise
pressure and compel the sultan to con
cede the demands respecting Turkey’s
disregard of French treaty rights still
remained urgent. The government,
therefore, decided that Admiral Gail
lard should occupy a couple of ports on
the Island of Mitylene, which is conve
niently close to Smyrna, so should the i
government s impression mat the snl-
tan will satisfactorily settle the mone
tary question without delay prove un
justified, and the customs receipts at
Mitylene be not sufficient to meet the
French claims, Smyrna can yet be oc
cupied.
Hopes For Eariy Adjustment.
“In the meanwhile the occupation of
the ports on the Island of Mitylene is
more convenient from a military point
of view, as the French cannot be easily
disturbed on that island, whereas
Smyrna, being on the mainland, its oc
cupation might have more serious devel
opments than is desired.
“The French government, however,
trusts that the wnole difficulty will very
shortly bo arranged to us satisfaction
and hopes that the treaty stipulations
will be carried but by the issue of irades,
such as giving certain French schools
permission to open, which, thus far, has
been withheld, and also by giving offi
cial recognition throughout the Turkish
empire to diplomas issued by the French
medical faculty at Beirut, etc., etc.”

During the past week the managers of

At West Palm Beach the Seminole,
the Palms and the Holland have opened.
They start np iu November and run to
May. At Eau Galiie and a number of
other points the same is the case. The
resorts of the Florida East Coast Hotel

do not open until later in tne season,
and the same is true of the leading ho
