X (0 9 2 9 BP S BCHS Homecoming Court representatives Lady Bears volleyball wins region BRANNON BRADDOCK Jbraddo4@gmail.com On Tuesday, September 30th the Lady Bears volleyball team hosted GSIC for a non region match. This was also their annual Western Night & BCRD Volleyball Night. Burke County won the first set 25-9 and the second set 25-5 to win the match outright 2-0. “We were balanced offensively and defensively,” said head coach David Skinner, “while our players did a good job of staying locked in, amidst all the possible distractions. Our fans were great, and our recreation department volleyball pro gram participants were amaz ing! Their top players against GSIC were Krystalyn Buxton (eight kills), Londyn Williams (eight kills), Ra’ Shanna Heath (twelve aces), Maritza Rivera (nine digs; eight assists), and Cheyenne Queen (eight assists; five digs). On Thursday, October 2, the Lady Bears held their senior night, hosting Westside and Hephzibah. Seniors Krystalyn Buxton, Maritza Rivera, and Giner Barnhart were hon ored. Burke County won their first match 2-0 (25-7; 25-7) against Westside. They were led by Krystalyn Buxton (eight kills), Kristasia Hilton (five kills), Londyn Williams (three kills; two blocks), Ra’Shonna Heath (ten aces), and Chey enne Queen (eleven assists). In their second match, ver sus Hephzibah, they won the first set 25-6 and the second set 25-6 to win the match 2-0. The following players led the Lady Bears: Londyn Williams (nine aces; six kills), Krystalyn Buxton (four kills), Kristasia Hilton (three kills), and Ka- meren Habersham (nine aces). Rocket League moves into first place in the state From Staff Reports The BCHS esports team continued their season last week, playing games on Tues day, Wednesday, and Thurs day, across all of their titles. The Burke County esports team went 4-5 in an overall mediocre week. They began on Tuesday with matches in Splatoon 3 and Street Fighter 6. Each of these teams remains winless on the year, dropping games this week as well. Each went 0-3 and didn’t win a single match. On Wednesday, the Super Smash Bros teams played their matches. The Team B varsity team won their match in a 3-2 nailbiter. They moved to 2-0 on the season and are nineteenth in the state. The IV smash team won their first match of the year, moving to 1-1 on the season. The Team A varsity team had a confusing day, to say the least. They were X (0 9 2 a Head Coach David Skinner was named the Coach of the Year for region 4-AA, and BCHS senior Krystalyn Buxton was named Player of the Year for region 4-AA. Underclassmen chosen to represent their respective class are : seniors Sameria Adams, Kennedi Dykes, Kayleigh Elliott, Tryaonna Jonew and Maritza Rivera; juniors ZaMeria LaCue, Caitlyn Roberson and Jada Smith; sopho mores Ja’Niyah Bracely, Jewely Ellison, and Amoura Sherrod; freshmen Mariah Gilbert, Serenity Howard and Jada Powell. 60th High School Class Reunion The Waynesboro High & Industrial School Class of 1965 recently marked a significant milestone by celebrating their 60th Class Reunion. This memorable event brought together classmates to reminisce about their shared experiences, honor their lasting friendships, and reflect on the journey since graduation. It was a heartfelt occasion filled with joy, laughter, live entertainment and nostalgia as attendees reconnected and celebrated six decades since they first walked the halls of their alma mater. ON Saturday, October 4, they hosted the Area 4-AA Tournament Championship. In this tournament they defeated Butler in the first round (3-0) to advance to the champion ship match against Davidson. “The match was just what we expected,” said Skinner, “a slugfest.” They won the first set 25-22 and the second set 25-20. “We found ourselves in a bad spot in the third set,” said Skinner, “down 0-7 at the start of the set, our players didn’t flinch.” He continued, “They began to chop at the lead after a timeout and some basic adjustments. We were able to outscore Davidson 25-3 the rest of the way in the third, to win the set 25-10. Stats for the tournament are not yet available. The Lady Bears finished the unable to connect with their op ponents to play, so the ultimate say-so in who won was left up to a coin flip by PlayVS, which Burke County lost. “We will take our loss with dignity,” said head coach Brannon Braddock, “but I think PlayVS has to find a more efficient way to do this in the future.” Their opponents were unwilling to reschedule the match, which Braddock felt warranted a forfeit on their part. Thursday was a fun day for the esports team, as they went 2-2 across four game titles. They were forced to forfeit their Madden match after their starter was a no-call, no-show. “He’s been given a final warn ing before we move on to someone else,” Braddock said, “We’ve had attendance prob lems all season.” Mario Kart 8 also lost its match 0-2. They just can’t seem to find a groove after starter Tanesha Brown was injured in a car wreck. The regular season 27-1. They were 14-0 in Area 4-AA and were crowned the 2025 Area 4-AA Champions. Burke County High School’s Krystalyn Bux ton was named the 2025 Area 4-AA Player of the Year, and head coach David Skinner was named the 2025 Area 4-AA Coach of the Year. They have earned the privilege of hosting the first round of the state play- offs this year, and the match is tentatively scheduled for Tues day, October 14. They do not know their opponent or match time at this point; however, these details should be con firmed by October 11. “We are sincerely grateful for the fans that’ve shown their support for our volleyball program and our student athletes throughout the season,” Skinner concluded. This is BCHS’s first year play ing Marvel Rivals, and they are currently 2-0 after an intense 3-2 win on Thursday. With that win, they sit in second place in the state. Rocket League won their match as well (3-0). They moved to first in the state with a 2-0 record.You may remember the Rocket League team expe riencing similar success a year ago, but their season ended in the playoffs after captain Ethan Kemp was in a car accident. The esports team continues competitions this week, but will have next week off as a rest week. Be sure to tune into their YouTube streams, which start daily at 4:00 pm.
