Page 8B, Wednesday, October 8, 2025— The True Citizen National 4-H Week October 5 - 11, 2025 IS Sweet ISC 707 4-H. Nearly everyone has heard of it. Many people were involved when they were growing up. Yet few can really put into words what it truly is or the impact that it has had in their life. But everyone who has ever been a part of 4-H can agree: 4-H changes lives. Georgia 4-H is the youth development program through the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension. The goal of 4-H is to provide students with the subject knowledge, leadership, communication, and decision-making skills needed to be productive, contributing citizens. 4-H achieves this goal through hands-on learning experiences focused on agriculture and environmental issues, agriculture awareness, leadership, communication skills, food and nutrition, health, energy conservation, and citizenship. How does that translate to Burke County? Our students are involved in numerous projects and events throughout the year including livestock shows, project presentations, forestry judging, club meetings, community service projects, leadership conferences, and so much more! "We celebrate the great work of 4-H every week, but it's particularly special to highlight our impacts during National 4-H Week," said Melanie Biersmith, Georgia 4-H state leader. "The 4-H leaders, including faculty, staff and volunteers across Georgia, are creating and producing experiences and opportunities for youth to thrive." Georgia 4-H expands horizons for its members and encourages them to be productive citizens in the world around them. National 4-H Week is a collective opportunity to recognize all the ways that 4-H'ers are living out the organizational motto "to make the best better." We view Burke County 4-H as belonging to YOU - the young people and the community. We at the Extension Office invite you to join our team to "Make the Best Better." 4-H is available for all boys and girls from 9 to 19 - and there is no cost to join! We hope that you will celebrate with us the success of our program during National 4-H Week and join us in the upcoming year. The opportunities are endless! Opportunities for Youth!
