Being an Elementary School librarian is a great fit for a viva cious nerd with acute ADHD. The job changes every day depending on the needs of the school. Luckily, switching gears is part of my DNA. Oc casionally, I do come up with a whimsical plan that catches on. One such idea is our annual Read with the Bears event. I started doing this many years ago at WPS, and brought it with me to Blakeney. During Burke County’s Homecoming week each year, I plan an event where our foot ball players come and read with our students. They parade the halls first, to soak in the cheers and smiles before going to their assigned room to read with a class. This works on several levels. First of all, it is fun- for both our elementary kids and the high school students. Learning, especially reading, should be fun. Having a little “celly” every now and then is good for everyone! It shows our students that even big, tough football players value reading. It reminds reluctant readers that reading is not just a skill to master-it’s something that can bring joy and connec tion. But I also have another goal. Many of our students need positive male role models in Motherhood is the hardest thing I’ve ever done—and the best. People don’t tell you when you’re pregnant that you’ll cry, worry, and be ex hausted. They don’t mention that postpartum depression can feel less like sadness and more like the heavy realization that you suddenly care more for someone else than yourself. The hardest part of loving that much is knowing you can’t control everything. When my first little lady, Elsa, arrived, I couldn’t be lieve how beautiful she was. Her soul shone through her eyes before she could even Notice to the Public The following Petition requesting a Conditional Use Permit has been filed with the City of Waynesboro for Residential Childcare located at 918 Quaker Rd Drive, (Map & Tax Parcel 065A-234) A Public Hearing with the Planning Commission will be held at City Hall, 615 N. MAGIC ACT their lives. I hope that intro ducing our football players into classrooms might spark an interest in teaching in some of them. There are lots of ways that they can keep football in their lives after high school. Some might continue to play at the next level. Others might coach. I like to remind our players that not only can you be a coach when you are a PE Teacher, but also if you are a classroom teacher. I know of at least a few past players who did >S' Laura Reeves talk or walk. She was smart, silly, and stubborn from the start. Giving her medicine became my first true battle as a parent. She would spit it out with perfect defiance, wasting the precious antibiotic. Once, triumphantly, I thought she had finally swallowed it—until she, while looking me directly in the eyes, slowly let it dribble down her chin with a look that said, “I know what you’re up to, Mom.” Then came Inga. From the day she was born, she was my Velcro child- always stuck to my side, always close. Where Elsa was independent, Inga was clingy. Whoever came up with separation anxiety has nothing on Inga. I could not leave her sight. My girls truly seemed like they were from different planets altogether. And I needed both. Their op posite personalities shaped “Read with the Bears” back in the day, who are lower grades teachers now. Our schools are better because of it. Every year I plant that little seed, hoping it takes root and grows a few more dedicated male teachers in our profession. Planning the event takes time and effort, but it is well worth it. My favorite moment from this year came when one of our players, who speaks Spanish, was assigned to a class with several English lan ¬ WORTH EVERY DROP me into two kinds of mother at once. I loved both brands of motherhood, but the greatest gift I ever gave each girl was the other. We spent countless hours in the car, driving to gymnastics team practice, singing along to music, and talking about everything and nothing. They fought, of course — sometimes constantly. But one day, almost without me noticing, they be came best friends. That bond— built on car rides, laughter, and surviving their weird parents — was everything I had ever hoped for. They went to college together for many years, and still they are the best of friends. The payoff for all the ex haustion and self-doubt of those early years is this: grown daughters I not only love, but would choose as friends. Watching Elsa and Inga be come women is my reason, guage learners. One student in that class came to this country a week before school started, and didn’t yet know any Eng lish. This player read the book aloud, and then translated it just for her. It made him feel valued, and it made her feel included. It made my heart happy and honestly, I get a little misty thinking about it. Moments like this are why I love what I get to do every day. Yes sir, I really do love my job every single day. And I prom ise-it’s worth every wasted drop of antibiotic. ■■■■CROSSWORD ■ ■■■ r ACROSS 1) Nebraskan city 6) Jungle primates 10) Davenport 14) Group of nine 15) Bus money 16) Parts of history 17) Three magic things 20) Word before a maiden name 21) "... and make it fast!" 22) Superdome team 23) Deep cavity 25) They're under the table 26) Completely fill 28) Bad news from carmakers 32) Dodge successfully 34) Johnny Cash's " Named Sue" 35) After-school grp. 38) Two magic things 42) Planning center? 43) "Yup" opposite 44) Old caulking material 45) Thing tugged by a tyke 48) Infamous fiddler 49) Yarn lump 51) Low point 53) Metal fastener 55) Remove, as a rind 56) Org. involved with many touchdowns 59) Three magic things 62) Insistent impulse 63) Crime boss 64) Russian country house 65) Bouncy gait 66) Try, as a case 67) Luster y Timothy E.
