The Chamber of Commerce re-: |
elected all officers at its meeting last
night, authorized the naming of a
committee to confer with the county
farm bureau, authorized a monthly
appropriation for the support of the
Fitzgerald Concert Band, and pledged
support to the community service
council in its campaign for funds to
carry on the work in Fitzgerald.
Reports of committees showed
twenty-five new members to the
Chamber, bringing the membership
well above 200, the largest it has ever
besn. A balance of more than $5OO
in the treasury was- reported by
Treasurer J. C. Glover. The corpor
ation to build a sweet potato can
ning plant will not be launched until
next year, it was reported. Only
$6,000 of the needed $15,000 stock has
been subscribed. .
Will Support Band
Mr. R. J. Prentiss read an inter
esting paper on fire prevention, punc
tuated with frequent humor and grip
ping oratory.
The matter of supporting the Fitz
gerald band was presented by Man
ager G. S. Willcox, who organize.
and managed the famous Ocilla W,
*O. W. band. That organization has
been practically transplanted to Fitz
genald. The Chamber of Commerce
authorized a monthly appropriation
for its support.
Officers Re-elected
The election of officers was forced
out of its usual chaunel on motion of
Isidor Gelders and the entire official
family was returned in order by unan
imous votes. President J. H. Mayes,
Secretary Will A. Adams, Treasurer
J. C. Glover, and Vice Presidents ]J.
E. Turner and C. A. Newcomer were
'rc-elected without opposition. Mr.

themselves as highly appreciative of
the cordial manner in which Fitz
gerald . people proffered their hospi
tality to the visiting delegates to the
annual bible conference of '~ deacons
and elders of the Georgia church.
Cold rainy weather cut down the
number of delegates who attended to
sixty-five, instead of the more than a
hundred who had written they Avere
coming. All delegates werQJenter
tained in the homes of the members
of the congregation. The entire city
was glad to have them here. |

Veal Shows Reach City Tuesday and
Go into Winter Quarters
The Veal Brothers Shows rolled
into Fitzgerald yesterday morning af
ter having closed a successful season
playing at fairs and as a solo itrac
tion in cities and towns all/. Iver

Chamber of Commerce Committee Is
Named to Confer with Farmers
Thursday
A full attendance of members of
the county advisory council of the
Ben Hill County Farm Bureau As
sociation and many other interested
farmers, is ea(pectcd for the meeting
at the county court house at 3:30 o'-
clock,. Thursday afternoon. A com
mittee of nine from the Fitzgerald
Chamber of Commerce will confer
with the farmers on a program of
cooperative work for the next year.
The Chamber of Commerce plans
to cooperate more closely with the
farmer through the farm bureau this
year than ever before and the meet
ing Thursday afternoon will be the
first step toward an effective joiat
drive for more prosperity.
The Chamber of Commerce com
mittee which will advise speciffically
on the best practical means of secur
ing markets in Fitzgerald for all

and destroyed six hundred gallons of
beer, ready for distilling. The stjlls
were located near Mobley Bluff on

The Fitzgerald Community Chorus
was formally organized and predented
to the city at a community mass meet
ing and song demonstration in the
Odd Fellows Hall Tuesday evening.
The chorus was formed with the com
munity service song leaders, class as
a nucleus. : :
Mrs. R. G. Shannonhouse. was elect
ed president of the chorus, Mr. H. B.
Brown, vice president, Mrs. Nelle
Frazier Moncrief, vice president Mrs.
J. M. McNeil, secretary, Mr. J. H.
‘Burke, treasurer. The officers will
work in conjunction with the music
icommittec of the community service,
council, whose chairman is Mrs.
Frank Ward.
The program last night was opened
by community singing led by Ed F.
Shumway of the community service
council. Thirty members of the song
leaders’ class led the class and the
audience in various songs during the
demonstration. Mr. Shumway pre
lscntcd the chorus, after its organi
zation, to Chairman J. E. Turner of
Ithc community service council. Mr.
Turner accepted and presented it to
Mayor J. L. T'ittman for the city.
Mayor Pittman accepted the services
of the chorus. :
Community and neighborhood sing
ing during the year. The first sing
will be at 3 o’clock Thursday, Thanks
giving, afternoon at the City Hall
Park. Another will.be Sunday, after
ncon at 4 o'clock. Leaders from the
class will direct the singing.
Mr. Shumway and Mrs. Shumway
left Fitzgerald this afternoon for
Waycross where he will organize
singing.
Miss Annie Flo Hollingsworth of
Ocilla spent Monday in -Fitzgerald
shopping.
