Davis Brothers Store
-
In Ocilla Is Burned
An attempt to burn the grocery
store of Davis Brothers was made]
this morning about five o’clock, The
stock is almost a total loss and the
building is badly damaged, \
After the fire had been extinguish
ed, an examination of the roof of the
'guilding disclosed the fact that two
holes had been gored through the
roof with a large auger close to
gether and the connection between
them trimmed out with a pocket
knife, which was found lying near the
hole, Straw was also found around
the hole, and near by was a place still
wet with kerosene where the oil can
had been set, The smell of kerosene
can be still detected when this is writ
ten. At the rear of the vacant store
of R. W, Hawes, a few doors away
from Davis Brothers store, a ladder
was found which had been used by
the fire bug and at the foot of the
ladder a. sack of excelsior and the five
gallon can that had evidently been
used,
The county’s blood hounds were
sent for and about sun up, within a
short time after the fire had been dis
covered, but it was found that there
was not a dog at the camp capable of
service, One of them had an injured
foot and the other was in no better
condition,
The building belongs to Mr. W, N
Hudson. We have not been able to
learn anything about the amount of
insurance carried either on the build
ing or on the stock,
Officers are working upon the sev
eral clues left by the incendiary, the
vocket knife, the sack of excelsior,
and the oil can, and it may be that
the guilty man will be caught. There
is considerable indignation ' lagainst
‘whoever committed the crime, and
‘his apprehension would give- general
3sutisfaction,—(")cilla Star June 23,
The store was in charge of Mr, Fos
ter formerly with Davis Brothers in
this city by whom the store was
owned, An effort will be made to se
cure the assistance of the State Fire
Marshal to locate the fire bug who
seems to be operating extensively in
this section,
Davis Brothers carried a $6,000
stock and $4,000 insurance,
