Melancholy mi l distressing death of
Three Brothers#
T iroe brothers, by the name of McGaeadv,
were drowned o i Satuaday afternoon, a lew
yards above the dam, in tne Patrons Creek.
T ie yo ingest of them aged about 4 ye irs, was
playing neor the water, and siiped under the
ice; tne second one went into save him, and
became entangled in the ice. By tins time the
mother nad arrived on t:e spot. Tie oldest
one, aged 13. was just plunging in for the pur
pose of attempting to save li s brothers. The
mother saw that all three were in danger of per
is ling, and attempted to reach them. Tne ol
dest one, forgetful of self, even in that mo
ment of extreme danger, called out and en
treated his mother not. to attempt to save them,
lest she also should be drowned! Heroism,
self-possession and disinterestedness like this, is
rarely witnessed. The afflicted mother saw
all three of‘her children perish, without having
it in her power in consequence of the ice and
great dentil of the water, to extend them any
ad. 'I 1 icy were all fine, intelligent, and prom
ising boys. The scene was one of anguish,
too heart rending for description.

93" With pleasure we give place For tan poetical effu
; siou of one of the Battalion from Georgia, in the expe
dition to Texas. It is addressed to Miss Joanna Trout
man, of Knoxvi le, Crawford county, in this S’ate, in con
sequence of the presentation of the “ Single Starred
Banner” to the corps on its way to Texas. It has been
handed u«, with a request fur publication, by a friend of
the parties.
I r elasco, January 26th, 1337.
To Miss Joanna Troutman :
Permit me to present you a copy
of an effusion, composed by one of the Georgia Volun
teers, complimenting you for your evidence of Patriot
ism in presenting them with a Flag.
This silken banner, this silken banner,
In glorious triumph soon shall wave;
O’er forresc wide, and green Savanna,
Borne by the chivalrous and the brave.
Yes, it shall proudly float above,
The heads of those whose hearts beat high
For deeds of fame :—whose ardent love
For freedom , glows in every eye.
And now, this banner is unfurled,
By patriots in a foreign iand ;
“ Breaths there a man ” in this wide world,
Could wrench it from a Georgian’'s hand ?
No, no ! ’twould be as vain to try
To snatch from us this banner bright;
As ’twould to bid the orbs on high
Cease to emit their gorgeous light.
Sooner would a Georgian die,
And sink into a soldier’s grave,
Than see tills Flag, now floating high,
Struck to a Despot’s hireling slave.
Maiden, it ne’er will be disgraced,
By those to whom you did i.,trust
Its destiny; but shall be replaced
In thy fair hand, bright as at first.
