“ The world is full of Poetry—the air
Is living with its spirit : and the waves
Dance to the music of its mehtdies,
And sparkle in its brightness.”
The Dead Hariiier.
BY G. D PRENTICE.
Bleep on—-sleep on —above thy corse
The winds their sabbath keep,—
The wave is round thee—and thy breast
Heaves with the heaving deep,
O’er thee, mild eve her beauty flings,
And there the white gull lifts her wings ;
And the blue halcyon loves to lave
Iler plumage in the holy wave.
Sleep on —no willow o’er thee bends
With melancholy air,
No violet springs, nor dewv rose
Its soul of love lays bare ;
But there the sea-flower bright and young
Is sweetly o’er thy slumbers flung ;
And, like a weeping mourner fair,
'The pale flag hangs its tresses there.
Sleep on —sleep on—the glittering depths
Os ocean’s coral waves
Are thy bright urn—thy requiem
The music of its waves ;
The purple gems forever burn
In fadeless beauty round thy urn ;
And, pure and infant love,
The blue sea rolls its waves above.
Sleep on—sleep on—the fearful wrath
Ot mingled cloud and deep,
May leave its wild and stormy track
Above thy place of sleep.
But when die wave has sunk to rest,
As now’t will murmur o’er thy breast;
And the bright victims of the sea
Terchance will make their home with thee.
Sleep 'Mi —thy corse is far away,
Bo i »ve bewails thee yet, —
For ee the heart-rung sigh Is breathed,
V, i lovely eyes are wet :
And she, ;hy young and beautious bride,
Her thou fits are he eriug by thy side ;
As oft she 'urns to view with teurs
The Eden of departed years.
I*ietnre of a Schoolmaster.
Os all professions that tin world has known,
From -I nvns and cobblers, upwards to die throne—
Fr in the crave architect of Greece and Rome,

*l he worst for care and undeserved abuse,
The first in real dignitv and use,
<lf skill’d to teach, and dilligent to rule,)
Is the blamed master of a little school.
Nat he vvh guides the legs, or skill the clown
To square his fis's, and knock his fellow down—
Nor he who shows the skill more barb’rous art,
T i parr • thursts, and pierce th’ unguarded heart:
But- th:i r good man, who, faithful to his charge,
Btil! toils the opening reason s o enlarge,
And guides the growing mint! through ev’ry stage,
From humble A B C, to God’s own page ;
From black, rough pot-hooks, horrid to the sight,
To the fairest lines, floating o’er purest white—
From Numeration, through an opening way,
Till dark Annuities seem clear as day.
Fours o’er the mind a flood of mental light,
Expands its wings and gives it power ol flight—
'Till earth’s remotest bounds, and heaven’s blight
trains, .
lie weighs,he measures, pictures and explains.
If such his toil, sure honor and regard,
And wealth and fame will be his dear reward :
Sure ev’ry tongue will utter forth his praise,
And blpssings gild the evening of his days.
Yes 1 blest indeed, bv cold ungrateful scorn,
With studv pale, by daily crosses worn :
IFspised bv those, who to his labors owe
All that they read, and almost all they know.
Condemn’d each tedious day such cares to hear,
As well niigh f drive even Patience (o despair ;
The partial parents’ taunt, the idler dull,
'The blockhead’s dark, impenetrable skull ;
The endless found of A B C’s whole train,
Repeated o’er ten thousand times m vain—
Placed on a point, the object of each sneer,
His faults enlarge, his merits disappear.
If mild, “ Our lazy master loves his ease—
The bovs at school do anvthing thev please.”
If rigid, “ He’s a cold, unfeeling wretch ;
IJ» dr vps the children stupid with the birch—
!\fv child with gentle means will mind a breath,
But. frowns and flogging frighten him to death.”
.Do n« he will, his conduct is arraigned,
And dear the little that he gets, is gained ?
Even that is given him, on the quarter-day
With looks that cal! it “ monev thrown away.”
Just heaven ! who knows the unremitting care,
And deen solicitude that teachers share,
jt ®uch their fate, bv thv divine control,
Oh ! give them strength and fortitude of soul—
Botds that disdain the mnrd’rous tongue oi lame—
And strength to make the sturdiest of ’em tame.
Grant this, ye Powers ! to Dominies di^ticbt —
Their sharp-tail’d hickories will do the rest.
