ORIGIN OF YANKEE DOODLE.
A correspond mt West
chester (Penn.) Republican
gives the folfow ng extract from
Judge Martin's History of North
Carohna, to sbow r the origin of
thejpopular air of Yankee Doodle.
“In the attacks made upon the
French posts in America, in 1775
those against Niagara and Fron
tenac were made by Governor
Shirley of Massachusetts, and
General Johnson of New York.
“ Their army during the sum
mer lay op the Eastern bank of
the Hudson, a little South of the
Citty of Albany ; in the early part
o ! June, the troops of the Eastern
provinces began to pour in com
pany after company rnd such as
semblage of men never before
thronged together on such an oc
casion, unless an example may be
found in the ragged regiment, of
Sir John Falstaff. It would have
relaxed the gravity of an anchor
ite, to see the descendants of the
Puritans marching through the
Streets of that ancient city, and
tikmg their station on the left of
the British army, some with long!
coats and others with no coats at
all, and with colors as numerous
as the ra.nbow ; some w ith tlun
hair cropped like the army of
Cromwell, and others with w igs,
the locks of w hich lloated with
grace around their shoulders.—
Their march, their acoutrements,
and the w hole arrangement of the
troops, furnished matterot amuse
ment to the British army. The
music played the airs of two cen
turies ago ail the to -1 ensemble ,
upon the whole exhibited a sight
to the wondering strangers to
which they had been unaccustom
ed.
“ Among the club of whist that
belonged to the British army,
there was a Doctor Bha< burg at
tached to the stall’, who combined
with his knowledge of surgery,
the skill and talents of a musickm.
To please tile new comers he
composed a tune, and with much
gravity recommended it to the
officers as one of the most cele
brated ans of martial music. The
joke took, to no small amusement
of ihe British. Brother Jonathan
exclaimed it was nation line, und
in a tew days nothing was heard
in the provincial camp, but the
air of Yankee Doodle.
“ Little did the author of this
composition then suppose that
an air made lor the purpose of
levity and ridicule, should be
marked for such high destinies.
In twenty years from that time
the National march inspired the
heroes of Bunker’s Hill and in
less than thirty, Lord Cornwallis
and his army marched into the
American lines to the tune of
Yankee Doodle.
