i LOSS or NITROGEN WHEN PEAVINE3 ARK
TURNED UNDER.
Question I.—Suppose I wjsh to tnru
peaviuos nnder tor fertilizing, how
shall I prevent the loss of the nitrogen,
which the peas have furnished? If 1U
! during' the winter we kuow that tni
must inovitably happen,
i Answer I. —As you will notice from
: the commissioner's letter for this
month, to turn an entire pea crop under
is not the most remunerative plan of
utilizing its benefits. A far better pay
ing method is to cut the vines for hay
and sow either rye or Crimson clover
the stubble. Or you might sow
wheat or winter oats, add by using
some form of potash, 200 pounds per
acre of kaiuit is good, you oonld expect,
with ordinary seasons, a paying yield.
For these crops the land should be thor
oughly plowed and harrowed.
SPRAYINd APPARATUS.
Question 2.—The development of
fungous' diseases and the increase of
insect pests are becoming snch soiirbej
of worry and loss to the vegetable ami
lruit grower that I can but agree with
your views on the subject of preven
tives. spraying, etc. With this end in
View I would like to know something
of tiie proper apparatus to bo used anil
the probable cost
Answer 2. —We Lave recently sees
in operation a small sprayer, which can
be attached to the side of any vessel*
barrel, tub or bucket, and for a small
garden or orchard .will' busWer'every
purpose. It can be easily handled,
throws the spray with sufficient force
and cost $5.50. •
For larger orchards or market gar
dens the following from Secretary Mor
ton, United States commissioner of ag
riculture, covers the ground:
“Spraying to control various insect
pests, particularly tiiose of the orchard
and garden.* has reached so. satisfactory
and iuoxagnsi ve a basis that it is recog
nized by every progressive farmer as a
necessary feature of the year’s opera-.
Mona, aiul in tljo case 6f. the apple, pear
End plum crops the omission of such
j treatment means serious loss. The
consequent demand for spraying appa-
J ratus has been met by all the leading
pump manufacturers of this country,
i and ready-fitted apparatus, consisting
' of pump, spray tank or barrel, aud
J nozzle with hose, are on the market in
f numerous styles at prices ranging from
1 S2O upward. The coat of a spraying
! outfit for orchard work may, however,
! be considerably reduced by purchasing
I merely the pump and fixtures and
; mounting them at home on a strong
! barrel. Au/ipparatus of this sort, rep
resenting' a style that has proven very
satisfactory in practical experience, is
illustrated in the accompanying figure.
, It is merely a strong pump with an air
-chamber to givo a steady stream pro
vided with two discharge hose pipes,
j One of these enters the barrel and
I keeps tlie water agitated and the poison
1 thoroughly intermixed, and the other
and longer one is the spraying hose and
terminates in the nozzle
I “The spraying hose should be about 2t
| feet long and may be fastened to a light
pole, preferably of bamboo, to q&ist in
directing the spray. The nozzle should
be capable of breaking the water up
into a fiue mist spray; so as to wet the
plant completely with the least possible
expenditure of liquid. The two more
satisfactory nozzles are those of the
Kixon and the Vermorel type. A suit
able pump with nozzle and hose may
be obtained of any pump manufacturer
or hardware dealer at a cost of from sl3
tp.slo, If brass fittings be se
emed it will serve for the application
of fungicides, The outfit outlined above
1 may be mounted on a cart or wagon,
the additional elevation secured in this
■tray facilitating the spraying of trees,
Or for more extended operations, the
pump may be mounted oa a large water
tank.”- •

Col. Bettis, of Paris, Texts, re
lates this amusing incident to the
Louisville Courier-Journal:
Our congressional campaign last
year was a ‘corker.’ There were
three consulates in the field for the
4th district nomination, and they
ran each other so hard that it was
finally neccessary to drop a*l three
of them and fall back on Dave
Culberson, who was not a candidate
for re-election. Now, two of these
three candidates, Col. Jake
Hodges of -my city, and State
Senator John Crawford of Sul
phur Springs, (who by the way
wenrp long raven hair down on
his shoulders), were booked for a
jointidebate in the town of Atlanta.
Colonel Hodges opened with a very
able speech, and when he had con
cluded and thanked the audience
for the attention and applause they
had given him, he wound up with
a tow bow and said-: ‘Now, gen
tlemen and fellow citizen, I yield
the floor to my honorable oppo
ponent from Hopkins, whose flow
ing raven locks have been the ad-
Tniratiou of every lady present. ’
Hodges took his seat, and as Sen
ator John Crawford arose the band*
through some misunderstanding,
struck up that familiar air,
‘Johnny, Get your Hair Cut.’ The
crowd caught the joke at otfije
and every Hodges man present
joined in tl e air at the top of his
voice. The affair upset Craw ford
so badly -that bis entire speech
fell flat, and the joke clung to
him throughont the entire cam
paign.”
