WHAT THE PUBLIC SHOULD
KNOW ACGUT CANCER
Prepared for Publication bv the Cen
cer Commission of tae Medical
Association of Georgia and the
Georgia Division of the American
Society !or the Control of Cancer
WARNING No. 3
‘‘lt is u serious thing to he a wom
an.” One woman in every eight di?s
from some form of cancer af or the
age of forty. Thie.o times a* many
women ns men die of cancer between
the age? of thirty-five and forty -five
and twice as many between forty-live
and fi fly-Five. Every woman who be
comes a mother is left in a condition
that makes her more susceptible io
cancer.
Ten thousand women die annually
in America from cancer cf the breast
and fifteen thousand from cancer of
the generative organs. The average
age at which these women die is forty
nine year*. Thousands of young men
and women are robbed of their ben'
friend at a time v/h<.n she is :r.0.-t
reeded.
If women will exercise a re-a'onabi’c
amount' of care a large number of
deatiis front cancer of the breast may
be avoided. Tho moat prominent
symptom i. i single lump. Nine times
out of ton it dees not give pain. There
is only cm- (v-;ts'r>i.'iiog symptom and
that is “the lump.” A lump in the
breast of a woman under twenty-five
is not, ue a rule, cancer: there is only
one chance in. a thousand that it F.
If, however, the patient is older the
chances increase materially end by
the lime she is forty-five tho re are
nine chances out of ten that it is n
cancer or will be. if not removed.
Cancer of the breast is serious be
cause it spreads so early ami so
quickly to other parts of the body.
A!mo t before tire patient is aware of
tho presence of th-* lump smiri parti
cles of it may have been broken off
and carried to the lymph glands. This
materuiliy leasers the chance of re
covery .
Snrre of the most important facts
the public should re member aie that
cancer of the breast occurs mu'-t fre
quently between the ages of thfrty
ffve and fifty-five. I: doe: not matter
whether or not the patient ha, borne
and nursed children. Heredity has
nothing whatever to do with its occur
rence. It does not cause pain. lz is
not in any sense con-.agious-. It may
or may not La by a bruise. It
may or may not be t u e result of for
mer abscesi or infiammalions. One
thing we kn w: IT IS A PAINLESS
LUMP.
