STEEL. ROADS
T’ut man who 1:-* laugied at today
is revered to-morrow. They laughed
at Bill and his telephone, Edison and
his electric light, and Langley with
hlr crazy flying machine. The Wrigu
brothers were deridtd, the discoverer
cf X rayc wore ridiculed, and the
“radio delusion” brought uni Its and
amusement.
But not row!
It is as impossible for us to say,
now, what the road of the future is
to be, as it was impossible for us to
say, five yeans ago, whit the radio
broadcast of to-day would be.
An inventor v/ruts to interest can
itrl to making a roadway of steel.
It will cost, if built, not thousands,
but several hundred of thousands of
dollars per mile. Road builders laugh
Tht public laughs. We all laugh.
Why pay thrto hundred thousand
dollars a mile for reads when' we car*
get them for a few thousands?
Twenty yens ago the idea of pay
ing twenty-five thousme. dollars a
mile for road 'was laughed at!
This steel idea may be all wrong.
It half n’t Keen tried. It'may be chim
erical in the extreme. We ton’t know
But wc do know that laughing at
it because its different is no way to
provt it idiotic. Ten years ago people
laughed at tbo idea of national high
ways. They don’t laugh any more.
More and more pecplt are coming tef
think tb it highways are as much ; a
part of the Nation’s business as wa
terways, Panama Canal, battleship,
an army.
/ The new idea is always laughed
at. Laughter doesn't prove anything
except the “■stand-pat-mind” of the
laugher. Maybe steel roads at thret
hundred thousand dollars a mils are
impractical. But why not bring
somtthing else to bear cn the ques
tion besides laughter? Nobidy laughs
at national highways any mort; not
even Congress! 1
The joke of yesterday is the fact
of to-day. Maybe we will yet ride on
national highways of steel! They
laughed at steel rail: for locomo
tives, too. They laughed at transeon
tinentay highways. And how they did
laugh at Dt Leseeps and his Panama
Canal 1
lie laughs btst who laughs last.
