What I ><><■(«.r lliillanil Thinks
AIh.iii ||
Fo»m “Tnj’ww uf the Time" in tho Hej(t. Scrilmcr.
A man was recently hanged in Massa-
rhuretU lor taking vengenn
who hail practically disputed his projicrty
in a girl. The man was a brute, o: <<oarse,
but he had on opinion that a girl who
had given herself to him in the coinplet-
est surrender n woman eon make, was in
sumo sense his; that her giving herself
to another involved his dishonor; and
thnt his property in her was to bo de
fended to the extremity of death. A prom
inent newspaper, while recording the
facts of thu case, takes tho occasion to
say thnt this idea of ownership in women,
is thu came barbarism out of which grow
the evils and wrongs that the “ woman
movement” is intended to remove. If
we were to respond that ownership in
woman only blindly apprehended os it
was by our brutal gallows-bin], is the
one. thing that suv«h ns from the wildest
doctrines and practices of the free-lovers.
and is one of the strongest conservative
forces of society, it is quite likely that we
should be misunderstood; but wo shall
run the risk, anil make the assertion.
There is»n imtint in tho heart of every
weiiuMi which tells her that she is his to
whom she gives herself, and llis alone,—
an instinct which bids her cling to him
while she lives or hu lives—which identi
fies her life with his—which makes of him
and her, twain, one flesh. When thio
gift is once made ton true man, he recog
nises its significence. lie is to provide
for her that which she cannot provide for
herself; he is to protoct her to the extent
of his power; she is to share his home,
and to be his closed c.unpanion. His
ownership in her ouVvis bis most sacred
posseasion. and devolves upon him tile
grave t duties. If it were otherwise,
why Is it i!i it a woman who gives herself
away unwcrtluiy feels, when ahe finds
herself deceived, tluit the is lost ?—thgt
she bus parted with her. . If to me who
does not recognise tho nature of the gift,
and that she who ought to be owned, und,
by being owned, honored, is disowned and

bu .losksd Ntd rtinasd. beaanso she is the
gift uf lu\u mid not tho purchase of
money; but she is his, in a sens., in
which she cannot be another man’s with
out dishonor to him and damnation to
herself.
Our gallows-bird was, in his brntaljway,
right. If he hod been living in savage
society, without law*. afwl with the no-
cessity of wuanliiig his own treasures, his
act wO«U nave been looke.1 upon as one
of heroifm by all the beauties and braves
of llis trilie. The weak point in his case
was, tl.at’liU ownership in what hi! »**
pleased to call "hi> sin" \v.is nut est*b-

he lived. He wo* not legally inarricl,
and had acquired no rights under the
law to bo <lefendod. Wiat he was pler-icd
to consider his rights were established

wouinn to him.- If contrary to taw, he de-
fend.d mi property - in her by murder,
anil he wui hanged. He was served right.

There is nothing more menacing in th-j
aspect of aoci.d ulfitirs in this eanntiy
tlwn the eft. it aiiMJig a csrtiun class of
reformers to break up Uia identity of in
terest and fevling among men and women.
Men ore alluded to with sneer* and blame,
as being opposed to the interests of
using the power in their hands
and destructive policies of their few tnitf-
be protected from the false philosophies
truiflM sister*, who seek to turn the
world upside down. Political conrentions
may throw their sops to clamoring re
formers, but they mean nothing by it.
They never have redeemed a pledge to
these reformers; and we presume they
have never intended to do so. They ex
pect thf matter to blow over, and, if we
do not mistake the signs of the times, it
is rapidly blowing over, with more orles3
thunder and with very little rain. In the
meantime, if the disroasiona that have
grown out of these questions have tended
to open a broader field to woman's wo
manly industry, or obliterated unjust
laws from the statute-book, let every man
rejoice. No good can come to woman
that does not benefit him, and no harm
tliat does not hurt him. Humanity is

gether.
