him with a knife, all of which did little
more than graze the flesh. The worst
damage was done to the coat, one sleeve

Mortality.

Of the white. four died elsewhere and
were brought to the city for interment,
and one died of violence. This leaves
nine death* from disease among the white
people of Macon during the month. The
mortality for the present month will pos
sibly be a little heavier.

TALBOTTOH.
The May»r*« C«Mrt
Hi* Honor, tho M».tot. had ciffht cul
prit* up Wore him yeuterdaj morning to
&n*wer L vuriou* offense*.
The first name on the docket was that
of P. Simms, who was up for the third
time in three weeks on the charge of
vagrancy. Before hia ease had been dis
missed on his promises to leare town ; but
instead of leaving he resorted to his old
liabits of drunkenness. His Honor aen-
fenced him yeatenlay to pay a fine of five
dollars, or to ten days’ labor upon the
street*.
Henderson Munroe and George Wa*h
ington, about ten years of age, were up
for a joint case of disorderly conduct.
Investigation proved it to have been no
more than a mere street fight between
boys, and his Honor remanded them
their parents for the administration of
sufficient amount of the condign to nip
the rising bud of pugilism which is swe]
ing in their young bosoms.
Edward Jackson, colored, was regis
ter'll as a vagTant. He is the fellow
who was arrested on Wednesday, charged
with stealing some cows from Mr. Terry,
of Leesburg. After very many effort* he
managed to put up a pretty straight ac
count of himself, and the Mayor gave
him an opportunity to verify some of hi*
statement*. •
Peter King, colored, who was charged
with attempting to violate the person
a five year old colored girl, wa* brought
before the Mayor and remanded for
rant. He makes no denial of his crime
but, on the contrary, confesses that he
did the deed, and excuses himself by say
ing the d—1 got into him.
Ellen Brown, colored, stole some bed
clothing from the residence of Mr. S. A,
Porter. The goods were found in her
possession. She said she did not intend
to steal them, but just toqjc them off the
bed and carried them home with her, and
meant to have carried them back next
morning. She was fined five dollars
ten days in the barracks.
Jesse Williams and Amos Will bur were
found sleeping on the street*. While the
former was telling an interesting tale
how ho left Seago Station, because there
was no cotton down there to pick, and
came to Macon to pick cotton, his mother
walked into the court-room and claimed
the boy. She said she had attempted
whip him on 'Tuesday, and he had jumped
the fence and run away from her, and
had been gone ever since. Ho was re
mandod to her, and it is probable that he
finds it inconvenient to sit comfortably
since he got home. Tho other boy was
so mortified at the situation in which he
wa* placed that he took a chill on the
spot, and heaved, elc.,and was returned to
the barracks to remain until ho is
enough to begin a ten days* job at the
park.
CEOKGIA MILITARY ACADEMY.
The Bid that Macon has not Made
for It.
There is a statement going ^tho rounds
of tho papers to the effect that “Maoon
bids |250,000 for tho Georgia Military
Academy/' This statement places Ma
con in an attitude which alio lias not as
sumed by any word or act of her own, or
by any authoritative utterance whatever,
.aid it creates the impression abroad that
this city, by an overwhelming bid, aims
to forestall competition and gobble this
prieo, before other cities and towns have
a chance to show what they are willing
to do for it.
It is known that Marietta, the former
seat of the institution, claims it by right,
and is anrions to have it restored to her.
Griffin and Forsyth also want it, and
either city, no doubt, will make a hand
some offer to secure it; but, if Macon
should slip into the field wifh an offer of
#250.000, even before it is a settled fact
that the Institute is to be re-established,
she would at onoo incur the displeasure of
her sister cities, and this she has no desire
to do.
Maoon is not in a condition to offe:
quarter of a million of dollars to any in
stitution. The city has already subscrib
ed liberally for college purposes, and is
now on tho ere of spending large sums
of money for the establishment of a sys
tem of public schools. This latter enter
prise she cannot abandon, nor can she
afford to bo niggardly in her support of
it. If we are to have a public school
system, it must bo in every particular a*
efficient as those of Savannah, Atlanta
and Columbus, therefore, what money the
city now ha* to spend in educational pur
poses should be turned in this direction.
In no other way could the people be so
greatly benefited.
But we will say candidly that if the
movement to re-establish the Military
Institute should be a successful one, and
if the cities of the State are invited to
make bids for its location, the people of
Macon will probably make an honorable
effort to get it here. It is a desirable in
stitution to have in a community, and the
people of this community will probably
make as liberal an offer as any other; and*
the laboratory property ha* been men
tioned in this connection, we may say
that we think if an offer of that fine piece
of property would secure the instiute to
Maoon the offer would probably be made.
But a* the matter now stands all state
ment* a* to what Maoon bids for the in
stitute are premature, and are not w&r-

Disease Reenll* from the syutetn that has
hern invigorated and regulated by a course of
that most beneflicent of all vegetable elixirs. Hoc-
tetter's Stomach Bitters. Such, at least, is the
inference we are compelled to draw from the tes
timony of thousands of persons residing in un
healthy districts, who attribute their escape from
the epidemic and other complaints which prevail
there in the spring and autumn solely to the use
of this great protective and preventive medicine.
Manv Western and Southern farmers and plant
ers, as invariably as they sow and plant in the
spring and reap and gather in the fall, administer
it at those seasons to their families and employes,
and take it themselves from twice to three times a
day. The demand for it in the fever nnd ague
districts bordering on the Mississippi. Ohio and
Arkansas rivers is immenn; and wherever the
natural conditions are such as to generate inter
mittent or remittent fevers, it is held in the high
est esteem, both as an antidote to the atmospher
ic virus which provokes them, and as a swift and
certain remedy for those distressing forms of dis
ease. It is almost unnecessary to say tliat this
renowned tonic and renovator is now generally
accepted as a standard specific for indigetion. bil
iousness, nervous distemper, rheumatism, physi
cal weakness and mental despondency, not only
by the public at large, but by all unnrojudired
medical men. The vast popularity of the Bitters
has, of courss, led to many counterfeits and imi
tations, against which the community are re
quested to be on their guard.

ute Crystal l’ebbksd ” melted together, and are
called Diamond on account of their hardness and
brilliancy. It is well known that spectacles cut
from Braxillianor Scotch pebbles are very inju
rious to the eye, l>e<iiu*e of their polarizing light.
Having been tested with the polariscope, the
diamond lenses have been found to admit fifteen
per cent, less heated rays thnn any other pebble.
They arc ground with great scientific accuracy,
